Overall, my experience renting with this shop was "fine" -- I got a serviceable road bike that I could ride for the weekend, however there are a number of things I wish I knew before renting, especially as a taller rider. I put the order in the evening before to pick-up the following afternoon, which is short notice and I'm 6'4", so I usually expect to run into stock issues when renting/buying bikes, but there was no indication on the site that this was an issue. When I showed up, I was shown a nice looking premium rental bike (Litespeed with SRAM Red) that was way too small for me (couldn't get an answer on the actual seat tube length) and was told various times about how the reservation was very last minute. The store is relatively small (a converted cargo container), which means on-site stock is pretty limited. I spent nearly 45 minutes at the shop while they shuffled various bikes around to find one that actually came close to fitting with the seatpost nearly out of the bike, which ended up being an older Trek 5000-series with older components (Tiagra/old Ultegra) in poor shape. Despite being led to believe that I'd be renting a more modern road bike with a better drivetrain, which you can find at the same price at other shops in the area, I was charged the same amount in the end while riding a bike that was over a decade old and had shifting problems. To his credit, the owner was very kind and helpful in dedicating his time and attention in getting me set-up with at least something to ride and actually drove me back to my hotel so that I would make it to a wedding that I was running late for. I don't advise against renting here, just make sure to put your rental order in with some advance and maybe call ahead of time to verify what you'll be getting before you show up or expect to deal with the same experience I did. I also highly recommend that the store updates their online rental form to indicate if they don't have stock available so they can avoid being surprised when someone shows up for a bike in the size they requested. Also, list the actual bike size for road bikes, not just S/M/L/XL which can mean different sizes by manufacturer and actually make it more transparent what make/model bike the customer can expect instead of the extremely generic description listed.

I approached this little shop on the Chicago waterfront bikeway to get my bike pedals loosened so I can put my other pedals on, of which I had my own uni-tool to put on. I waited in line to see if they could help me out, and I assumed I would have to pay a nominal fee for them taking LITERALLY 15 seconds of their time. I assumed $5 was fair but I was unsure if they would even charge me that. I had no idea. After 20 minutes I kindly asked the person triaging customers if she could ask the presumed owner how much longer it would be. He responded with some wise-cracks and said he is going to charge me $10 (for the 15 seconds of work) to loosen the pedals. I then questioned the $10 and he immediately launched into a fit of rage, screaming at me saying he is "not running a free service for people and how dare I come up to him as he has to stand outside in the heat and sun all day long and his life is so difficult and he has so many problems and he has to pay his workers etc etc." At this time I thanked him twice and proceeded to turn around and ride away. All the while he continued to scream at me and continue on his tirade about how he is not running free services. I could hear him for a good bit as I rode away, I was laughing to myself. The real funny thing is, I would have gladly paid $5, and may have even paid his asking price of $10 for his 15 seconds of work had he not become so angry and filled with rage. ($10 at 15 seconds equates to $2400/hour.) No matter to me, I was able to borrow a wrench later on in the day and I did it myself, took me actually 8 seconds and I saved $10. Not a bad outcome for myself. Be careful with this place, don't question his prices. If you do, stand back and watch him Explode!!!!!

I recently visited Marc Taylor of 3rd coast bicycle repair to have my bike repaired. While I generally do not write negative reviews, I had a disappointing experience during my visit. Mr. Taylor appeared to be under the misconception that his repair services were the cheapest in the city, and this led to some misunderstandings during my visit. When I initially contacted Mr. Taylor, I informed him that both gears of my bike were not working properly, and he stated that he would need to inspect the bike to provide a quote. He estimated that the repair could cost anywhere between $5-$35, and I agreed to bring in my bike for the inspection. Upon arrival, however, Mr. Taylor quoted me $30 to repair the gears, which still seemed high but acceptable. After 10 minutes into the repair, I was informed that the cable was damaged and needed to be replaced at a cost of $15. I was told that this was a good deal compared to the price charged by other bike shops. The final repair cost was quoted at $45, which I found to be too high. When I expressed my concern, Mr. Taylor offered to repair only the front gear, which had a functional cable, for $15. However, 10 minutes later, I was informed that the front cable was also damaged and needed to be replaced. Frustrated by the miscommunication and the wasted time, I agreed to pay $5 for the work done, but this left my bike in worse condition than before. In conclusion, I was disappointed with the miscommunication regarding the repair costs and the final outcome. I hope that in the future, the shop will strive to provide clearer and more transparent communication with customers to avoid misunderstandings.

Terrible...I stopped here after getting a flat rear tire, and they replaced it. For the remainder of my ride, I was feeling extra resistance, and it looked like the rear brakes were now rubbing. I pulled off at 3rd coast again on my way back home and asked if they could take a peek. They insisted the brakes weren’t rubbing. After another couple of 36+ mile rides and two newly injured knees, I swore I could still feel the brakes rubbing. Since 3rd coast had refused to adjust them (or been unable to tell?), I took my bike to my usual shop to check it out and they could tell immediately the brakes were rubbing. My knees were so torn up I couldn’t ride for a month... super disappointed in these guys. To the owner's response - As I already mentioned above, I stopped back the same day, about an hour later, and your staff refused to help even when I pointed out the problem.

I recently purchased two mountain bikes. A used bike for myself and a new bike for my wife. When the new bike arrived, I attempted to put it together but needed someone more experienced to perform a proper tune up. I am located in Lemont and there are no local bike shops near the area. I found 3rd Coast Cycles by doing a quick google search. I called the number and was directed to Marc. He mentioned that he only does house calls in Chicago but since he was nearby he was able to stop by. He was kind enough to come to our home to look at both bikes. He took the new bike with him since it needed a new pedal crank. He dropped it back off to our home the very next day. Marc is very informative and really knows his stuff. I would recommend him to anyone! 3rd Coast Cycles is highly recommended!!

This shop and its employees are amazing! They're conveniently located right on the Lakefront trail, just south of the river. The first time I called to inquire about parts, Marc offered to swing by and take a look at the bike at my apartment! Later, I went there for some repairs and in the short time my bike was being fixed up, three others had stopped by for a flat tire or broken chain and these guys are able to have them back on their bikes in no time. They are very fair-priced and have extensive knowledge on all aspects of cycling. The staff was very friendly and helpful and were able to do exactly the repairs I'd asked when I dropped in. I would definitely suggest them for everything from tune-ups to flat tires to full bike servicing. They're fantastic!! I highly recommend!

  • Jessica Corvo

I usually handle my own flat tires but recently have needed help. First interaction was with Alberto. He was very kind, competent, and answered my questions whilst servicing my bike (change tube). Second interaction was with Mark (the owner). He was very kind, efficient, and competent whilst servicing my bike (change tube & check for puncture in tire). With the weather getting better, I'll be back for a full service. It's time for a new chain, breaks, and most likely tires! ZOOM ZOOM! If you are in the city, stop by and get your bike serviced. Worth every dollar. Consistently good experiences and genuinely good people.

Ordered a bike. Set up delivery. And when I reached out to coordinate delivery, I was told that the bike was given to someone else. Very unprofessional. Will never, ever order another bike here. They offered to show similar bikes and maybe offer free delivery. Oh wow, thanks for the maybe $15. I wanted the one I ordered. So annoyed. Just absolutely ridiculous. Never had a customer service experience like this. Edit: I offered to pay for it in advance to reserve. You said it wasn’t necessary and that I could pay on delivery. So. How is that my fault? Go ahead and try to dodge responsibility.

I have had Marc out to my house twice this summer to repair a number of bikes with different issues. It was a great experience. Marc is an excellent bicycle mechanic. He is knowledgeable of the industry and changes in bike technology. The repairs were done in my driveway in a timely manner. He completed fixing a untrue wheel with a hop in the rim, a damaged hub, a damaged bottom bracket, and he completed couple of tune-ups. The repaired bikes work well. We will have Marc back next year for our tune-ups and I would highly recommend him and 3rd Coast Cycles!

  • Patrick Villacorta

Went here for a bike rental. I reserved online and also rented on-the-spot. Friendly, helpful service. They make sure you get a correctly fitted bike. Better price than the competition at Navy pier. One issue might be a lack of prominent parking spots nearby but SpotHero can help with that. (For us, it just meant a nice walk on the Riverwalk on the way) Note: When booking online, they advise you to check the spam folder for the confirmation email. It did end up in my spam folder, so keep that in mind.

  • Jamie Pridemore

Mark and his band of merry men saved the day after I was in a bike accident yesterday. He not only attempted to fix my bike (though it'll need a new wheel), he helped me with a free loaner to go get my car and bring it back, which was immensely helpful as I was 6 miles away and very banged up - and I mean repair, rental, all for free. The world needs more Marks. It was the worst day I can remember having and thanks to them, everything wound up being as close as it can get to okay.

  • Mark Richmond

I had no idea how to put a bike together, they picked up my bike exactly when they said , my doorman said they were very nice and made sure they did hot any walls on the way out . They were on time , and told me no more then 2 days , they finished exactly when thru said they would and showed me how to use the bike and gave recommendations on safety and what to look for when using it . Also rented from there before , greet Bikes and service . Great experience. MR

  • Eric Hendricks

It was cold, he drove to my front door, had a bicycle lift with him, and fixed my e-bike Add Motor on the spot. Overall excellent work. He came prepare with hardware. For example, I had a bolt the was not permitting my battery to seat properly to make a electrical connection, because of a previous bad repair battery. No Ace Hardware shop needed. 20 minutes and my bike was fixed. Its hard to find a good mechanic in Chicago. You can trust this guy.

  • Nolan B

Went on a bike ride at LSD this past Saturday and had a flat tire about 2 miles away. I've always kept in mind of this place, just in case for situations like this. Thankfully they're there when you need them, especially at that location. Their pricing is also reasonable. I had them replace both the inner tube and tire for 50 bucks (I went for the cheapest parts btw) and took the guy less than 15 minutes to repair my bike.

  • Abigail Miller

Stopped by while riding the LSD trail. While my friend tested out their bikes, I asked what tool it was that I would need to adjust the height of my handlebars. They went ahead and adjusted it for me while explaining the details of how to do so properly since there was much more to it than I had realized. I appreciated the detailed explanation, show of expertise, and kindness in doing so without charging for labor.

  • Cindy Rowe

If you are looking to rent a bike for riding the lakeshore trail (or any other trail in the area!), we found 3rd coast to be extremely convenient, located right on the trail just south of Navy Pier. We rented excellent bikes and rode the trail to the southern end and back to almost the end of the trail in the north. Marc is exceptionally friendly, has quality, well maintained bikes. Can’t go wrong!

  • Zakhar Kravchuk

Fast friendly service, free air, amazing rentals and a convenient location - right on the bike path. Definitely recommend this shop for any of your biker needs. They have professional bikes if you're a hardcore biker. You also can rent locks, buy a new bike, get any bicycle equipment you need all right on the spot. Get a bike ride South for views, or take a ride North to visit Chicago beaches.

  • Don Eugenio

I got a tune-up for my wife's bike, twenty years old. Beyond convenient, they cleaned and oiled all parts, adjusted brakes and derailleurs with same day service for a fair price. They did recommend replacing both tires as the rubber was rotting; the clincher for me was they had three tire choices and could change them within ten minutes. Back on the road again; happy customer, can recommend!

  • Rachel Daniel

Came to my apartment complex and tuned up my bike and included adjustments for the rest of the season in the price. I recently had an issue with my metal fender hitting the wheel and creating a whistling noise, and Marc immediately knew the issue and was able to adjust it (as well as cut off a lock that I lost the key to) to where my bike is now whisper-quiet! Highly recommend!

  • Dabkevinhere

I bmx (trick bike) and didnt think they would be able to fix my flat. They were able to do it. Tho I watched the kid struggle his boss/manager gave him the proper tools from his truck (aka car wheel lug nut remover lol) and they fixed it. I'm really happy bc bmx bikes are built much stronger. Only thing I recommend is them to get better tools. Something not Stanley tools lol

  • Patrick Hammer

Great experience at this shop. I needed to rent a bike for a bike fitting course in town, and they set me up for 3 days for a very fair price. When I got the bike, I requested a shorter stem, and he swapped out the stem quickly to meet my specifications. The bike I rented was very well tuned and maintained. I would definitely rent from this spot again.

  • Emily Slanker

I got a curbside tune up and while I wasn't sure what to expect, it was quicker and easier than I thought it would be! I took my bike for a ride over the weekend and it ran perfectly! Marc is very personable so the tune up flew by, and the price was very reasonable. Will definitely be returning for any tune ups or issues in the future!

  • rick mandac

The owner Mark is straight up great guy who loves helping us cyclists. Be that thorough service or education. If you need either or just want to talk cycling and you are near the Columbia Yacht club please stop and patronize the man. You will both benefit from the experience. Your rock Mark thanks for being you brother…

  • Naveen Jain

Marc has been servicing our bikes for last two years. Firstly, he provides convenience by servicing the bikes at our home. Most importantly, he is very knowledgeable and does an excellent job with the bikes. Lastly, he has the parts etc. with him to handle any situations and is very ethical in his recommendations.

  • scott allen

Rented bikes. Great location with miles of riding opportunities. Walked up & rode out on fitted, solid bikes in a matter of minutes. THE best way to see Chicago. 5+ Stars for staff. We talked to one of the bike mechanics after our ride, great guy. Shout out to the people keeping the bikes in good running order!

  • Joe D'Andrea

Marc was awesome. I messaged him on google and within minutes go back to me and within the hour was at my house to pick up my bicycle. He got everything done as promised in the same day and dropped it back off at my house in the evening. I highly recommend Marc and his company! A+++++++ 5 Stars

  • Selena Goodwin

Came in with a really bent wheel, after getting savagely doored downtown by a valet who wouldn’t even apologize, and even tho these guys were busy, they offered me a used wheel for a good price and fixed my bike right away. Didn’t know they did repairs so readily, plus their dog is really cool!

  • Mary Yong

Scheduling my bike assembly and tune up was easy and prompt. I appreciate the reliable and knowledgable help getting my bikes in shape as well as advice and recommendations regarding my bikes and local trails. Would definitely recommend to friends and family, and have actually done so.

  • Justine Kuryliw

I was planning a bike ride for my husband for Father’s Day, but all the local bike shops quoted me at least two weeks for a tune up. Marc was amazing and was able to do a curbside tune up at our home within a day. He’s easy to work with and very professional. Overall great experience.

  • Adam Stevens

Bike is great, new bar tape, free upgrade to accommodate the size I requested. Shifting is exact, brakes perfectly tuned. Took the plunge and went foe a six day rental. though I’m staying far south the delivery was on point, same fee. Worth every penny. No excuses this vacay!

  • Sarah M

Really great experience! Marc was friendly and prompt scheduling the appointment. Tuned up 2 bikes that were in rough shape in less than a couple of hours. Very reasonable priced. Loved the mobile service. We will definitely call him again for our future bike needs.

  • Kevin McCarthy

This group is great. I live up the street and have driven past 3rd Coast a million times. Finally, when my bike was acting up, they were more convenient than any spot in Old Town or River North. Kevin did a great job. My bike feels brand new. Will return next year.

  • Kathleen Crawford

My derailer failed while I was out riding and I thought I’d have to walk home but I saw 3rd Coast Cycles on Google and walked/coasted down to this shop. Marc had me on my way in under an hour! Had a nice selection of bikes for rent/sale as well. Thanks!

  • Samantha Chiu

Great experience with the entire team! Very knowledgable with their products and customer service was amazing. I made a last minute request and they were so kind and patient to help me get everything setup. I will definitely be working with them again!

  • Simeon Pratt

Long story, but had two bike tires immediately pop after installation. It’s never an exact thing, so the tech was good enough to drive to my house and fix the tire in person the next day. A little frustrating at the time but I appreciate the effort.

  • Robert Dixon

Third coast cycles helped us out immensely at the University of Illinois Chicago for a group bicycle ride. The Vendor we had planned to work with fell through and on relatively short notice third Coast cycles delivered quality bicycles on

Bought a new mountain bike and had it delivered to my home. Called Marc and he came over right away in the western suburbs (St. Charles), on time, and assembled my bike. Very impressed with 3rd Coast Cycles and will use them again.

  • Sue Max Ramsgate

What great service! We made the mistake to mention that we needed just help with a flat stroller tire and thought we may need entire new tires. The guy working noticed it was just the inner tube that needed to be replaced.

  • Ginger Devaney

Great experience. Bike needed a tune up which became urgent when I got a flat. Bike was picked up at my house, serviced, and dropped off on the same day for a very reasonable price. Text communication was great.

  • Chris Hong

Horrible unfriendly and rude. Tried to ask for a refund they hang up immediately and doesn’t even confirm or send confirmation of the refund. They really need to learn how to treat customers better.

  • C. Harrison

Curbside service is awesome. Direct contact with the service technician to schedule and communicate about arrival. Service warranted through the season. And he kept working when some rain started.

  • Ruben Felipe

My handle bars were loose. They are very professional and nice. Fixed my bike in seconds for a couple bucks. Without them I would’ve had to walk with my bikes for ma out 15 miles to get back.
