Grand traditional theatre restored and awesome. Arrived too early but was able to wait on a chair inside. Theatre seating was comfortable even for my Princess and the Pea sensitivity. Sound quality was exemplary - not too quiet nor too loud. Last I was there, I saw Memoria with Tilda Swinton. This time I took in "The Young Arsonists.' Sheila Pye examines the inception of female rage and its origins in trauma and wounding in a coming of age for teen girls. She handles all her instruments with artistic surgical precision. Her audience included family members. They appeared shocked at her victorious defiance of conventions. The ending speaks to the power of feminist gaze. (Where one cannot but help think about her choice of Maddie Martin as one of two co-leads/actors - exactly how autobiographical was this?) Superb.

Amazing staff and experience every time I've been. The restoration of this old theatre looks amazing. Plays a lot of movies that you wouldn't get a chance to see anywhere else including older movies that haven't been shown on the big screen for decades which is always a treat. They also just got a 35mm projector and haven't been showing quite a few films on it lately which look incredible because you can't get that warm and rich viewing experience on digital. All cinephiles and casual movie goers alike should take an opportunity to go see a film here. Also has a great snack bar with a wide selection and is even licensed. only one thing i would wish for is a bit more variety of films on a regular basis instead of the current schedule of playing some films a bunch of times, so that i could go more often.

Love Playhouse Cinema. I have been going there since it reopened in 2019. Watching new and especially classic films there is a real treat. The isles are spacious and the seats are comfortable. They have delicious treats from Listowel and now Jam Up the Mash Sours by Collective Arts. In September I watched Star Wars and Goldfinger back to back. It was fantastic getting to watch them on a big screen. Just over a week ago I watched The Shinning and The Rocky Horror Picture Show back to back. So much fun. Their membership is reasonable at $14. It allows you to procure a ticket for $10...most films. The membership also gets you a movie snack combo deal. The theatre is full of charm, great vibes and always offers a fantastic selection of films...new and old.

Classic cinema experience. It is so obvious that the folks at the Playhouse absolutely care about making the guest experience as nice as possible. Seats are comfortable and have tons of legroom so people aren't squeezing by you. Theatre is big and sits some 275 people. The screen would feel a little small if you were in the very back but just move closer and you'll quickly forget once the movie starts anyways. The membership price is ridiculously cheap and the attached bookstore means you can browse a little for fun before the movie starts. Very clean and lots of street parking nearby. Absolutely loved the experience and can't wait to go back

My family and I absolutely love Playhouse Cinema. We appreciate the variety of films offered, the friendly staff, and, of course, the opportunity to enjoy all of this in a beautifully and lovingly refurbished theatre of historical significance. It is a true treasure. During the pandemic, this theatre has been THE PLACE where we have been able to escape in a very safe and socially distanced manner. We have lost track of how many movies we have seen here with our three teens and as a couple since its opening and are always looking forward to our next visit.

I live a good 60-70 minutes away from The Playhouse so I've only been there three times, but it was worth the trip every time. If I lived closer I'd go all the time! Their prices are excellent, the architecture is beautiful, and most importantly, they show lots of phenomenal films. Making the trip down to see Possession (1981) resulted in that film immediately ending up in my all time top ten favorites list. The Playhouse is doing amazing things go keep cinema (old and new) alive. Every visit to the playhouse is an event, and they never disappoint.

Such a cute independent theater. It's really lovely in the theater and the seats are roomy and comfy. It was reasonably priced and the movie we saw looked great! I also appreciated that they didn't blast us with lights the second the credits started like Cineplex and Landmark do. I like to sit for a few moments and enjoy the credits after a good movie and Playhouse allowed us to do just that. They had a good selection of alcoholic drinks and an assortment of snacks. Everything seemed to be priced quite reasonably. Will definitely be back!

Just watched the movie “Magnolia” at the Playhouse Cinema on 35mm. This was my first time watching a movie here and it was great! The presentation was beautiful, the screen is big and wide, the projection was sharp and the audio was perfect! The audience was plenty as it was the last screening and respectful of others. A place where people who love movies, watch movies! They have popcorn, wine and beer with friendly staff. The exterior and interior architecture was beautiful too! Will definitely come back!

What an amazing place!! I feel like I’ve stepped back in time but still get to keep all the modern comforts. It’s so wonderful to have such a great rep theatre back in Hamilton (reminds me of all the time I spent at The Broadway Cinema years ago). Whoever does the programming really knows how to pick ‘em as there is always something interesting to see. Can’t wait to be able to buy my ticket and some popcorn and take a seat with other moviegoers to view some gem at the Playhouse. A true Hamilton treasure.

A charming theatre that's been totally updated and is beautiful both inside and out. Great sound and picture, very comfortable seats, gorgeous historical decor which take you back in time. The programmers at the theatre also put great films up on the screen. A great variety of the latest indies as well as special screenings of many of your classic favorites. Highly recommend checking it out. Take a picture in front of the theatre which boasts a beautiful new yet vintage Marquee. Truly one of a kind.

I'm so excited that this place exists! It has all the good aspects of classic movie theatres, plus modern improvements like compostable packaging. A friend commented that it was amazing to walk out of a movie onto the street, without the maze of escalators and hallways you get a the multiplexes. I have missed the Broadway ever since it closed, and loved the Bookshelf when I lived in Guelph, and this fills that space. Reasonable prices, friendly staff, beautiful space. Great experience.

I can't even begin to tell you how great this theatre is! It's so wonderful to have independent and interesting films in Hamilton again! Beautiful facility, great people who work there, wonderful atmosphere, and fantastic movies! My kids went to Rocky Horror on Halloween and I think it saved Halloween for my teens in the middle of a pandemic. We look forward to continuing our membership in 2021 and supporting great local businesses like this one. A true gem in Hamilton.

Fab-u-lous little restored piece of history! Incredible well-run, top-notch assortment of really reasonably-priced snacks (even vegan ice-cream and baked goods), wonderful staff, clean, and an absolutely first-rate lineup of smart, hip and thought-provoking film! I just really can't say enough good things! Oh, oh, and a $10 annual membership gets you $9 movie tickets all year - we like to go at least a couple times a month. Favourite theatre in the Hammer hands-down!

  • Brittany Turner

If you're interesting in seeing old classic films, niche documentaries, obscure genres as well as new releases all in one place, this is the place to be. The single-screen facility creates an intimate experience and generates a sense of community in your visit. The theater itself is beautiful, staff is lovely, and the popcorn/drinks/alcohol are very reasonably priced. The membership is also very reasonable, and comes with great savings! 10/10 experience!

  • Kevin Corado

Such a lovely theater! I came specifically to see the 4K restoration of Total Recall, and I was genuinely impressed with the venue. Outside might give the impression that it's a small spot, but the theater itself has plenty of seating! The box office is nice and well taken care of, fancy even. Popcorn is great, and there's plenty of other snack offerings too! Long story short, you can bet I bought a membership. I will absolutely be coming back!

  • Colleen Macfarlane

This place is phenomenal! The seats are comfy. The snacks are reasonably priced and there is a great selection including locally made small batch ice cream and beer/wine/cider! It's not too cold in the summer either which is a huge plus. It's got tons of charm and is always immaculately clean! Don't miss out on the membership either! It's super affordable and has some nice perks :) skip the big cinemas. You won't regret it!

  • Corey Matthew

Beautifully restored historic theater that shows a great mix of newer films, foreign films, and old classics. I've been a member since moving to Hamilton and they always have a great rotation of films to see. The lobby/door staff are always attentive and friendly and the snacks are reasonably priced. The attached book store is worth a visit as well so show up early to your film and leave some time to browse!

  • Jen Boughton

I love the Playhouse Theatre so much! They show quality films in a beautiful ambient theatre with great snacks! What more could you want? I love that they always have new movies cycling through their calendar. Every week there’s something new to pique your interest. It’s definitely worth getting a membership and cashing in on cheaper tickets as well :) I wish I could go everyday!

  • Kris Cath

Well, this was fun! Sunday matinee movie with a beer and / or wine options. Popcorn, of course. Had an opportunity to watch a movie that was released when I was 2. Plenty of parking available; lot, street, or city all within easy walking. Beautiful location, comfy recliner chairs, cupholders. Wheelchair accessible as well. Pop by for a movie! You won't be disappointed.

  • Leah

Went to see Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween. I would 100% recommend this place. It's very clean and the staff are friendly. Overall it's a very welcoming environment. You can also expect great quality when watching the film. Both visual and audio are perfect. Also pop into the little bookstore attached to the cinema. There are some good finds in there!

  • Mark Robinson

Playhouse Cinema is awesome. The theater is very well designed and always very clean. Staff are very friendly and the food and drink are very reasonably priced. The theater is always showing the best movies and it is overall much better experience than the larger cinemas. Would highly recommend checking this theater out for any occasion!

  • Michael Gilmour

Just had my first of many experiences at this great independent theatre. From the moment I walked in the door staff made us feel welcome. There's plenty of room in the seats and the owners did an incredible job restoring the Playhouse to it's former glory. I can't wait to see another film, especially a 35mm presentation.

  • Stuart Germain

Awesome Hamilton spot with loads of history. The film's are tastefully chosen and showtimes are good. Great popcorn and the selection of local craft beer is great. I saw a movie on 35mm film and it showcased the Retro vibe of this unique theatre. Truly a hidden gem in Hamilton. Would highly recommend a night out here.

  • Lila “Lilaycian” C.

I went to see the Rocky horror show and I loved everything. The prices were good and the seating was great but the movie was too loud. The very high pitched beeps were really hard on my ears and my friend has poor vision so we had to sit close to the screen which put us closer to the sound so it was extremely loud.

  • Nik Crawford

Fantastic art-house theater. Great selection of interesting titles at various showtimes throughout the week. Good picture and sound. Alcohol available at the concession. Limited parking in a lot north of building. A small offshoot of Epic Books nestled into the corner of the theater for pre-show browsing.

  • Zac Rewi

One of my favourite gems in Hamilton. It is one of the most beautiful restorations I've seen and you just get such a nostalgic feeling every time you go. They do a fantastic job selecting a mix of classic, documentary and Canadian films. I make an effort to go at least a couple times a month!

  • T Halper

Went to Pink Floyd show on July 8 Ivor Wynne and was thoroughly disappointed. Not one song was recorded in its entirety!!!. Do you know how annoying this is to a fan!!! This is my band....and I walked out.. playhouse Cinema is great not their fault! The popcorn was awesome tho!!

  • Jake Burgess

Just saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood here in 35mm and it was probably the best movie theatre experience I’ve ever had. The 35mm is absolutely breathtaking. So glad they got that projector! Crowd was having a blast. Popcorn was great (and a fair price). Totally recommend!

  • Michael Walton (Mike)

Visited for the first time to watch a documentary. Lovely theater that has been nicely renovated. We were both struck by the excellent ventilation which was excellent in a covid pandemic. Were less than 12 people in attendance. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

  • Rachel Irwin

One of the nicest venues around! The staff are always incredible, the content is creative and offers many genres, the space is eclectic and charming, and the A/V experience is akin to the big name places in the province. Would highly recommend Playhouse to anyone!

  • Tyler Smart

I love the playhouse! Besides having probably the best popcorn in the game, it is a lovely theatre that plays fantastic movies you just can’t seem to find at the big movie theatres! Highly recommend to any fan of film or anyone just wanting a fun night out!

  • Jay Smith

Recently saw “Raging Bull” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” at the Playhouse these being my first 2 visits to the theatre. What an amazing job they’ve done of restoring and preserving the cinema. Looking forward to watching many more films here.

Honestly, a new favorite theatre for my partner and I. Staff are very nice and there's always a great selection of movies playing! 2022's Rocky Horror Picture Show showing at the Playhouse is a positive experience that I'll never forget. So fun!

  • Nicholas Awde

Amazing atmosphere and tons of seats. This place is truly a hidden gem in Hamilton and very happy to see it has been restored into its original state. Prices are comparable to modern theatres so nothing outrageous in the financial department

  • Console Burnout

Son and I went for the first time on Sat to see Susperia. Great old theatre, well maintained and spotless. We were both very impressed. Hopefully the end of October won't mean the end of showing horror movies. We will definitely be back.

  • Lisa Hamilton

I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this theatre is. Complete with a licensed snack bar with a good selection of treats. Sound and optics were excellent as well. Too bad there aren't more of these older theatres around.

  • Matt Matti

I like how the seating area is different. It really gives you the feeling of watching it with others. I like when they have 35mm film here and I'd like to see more of that. The movie selection for Halloween was great,

My favourite local theatre with a wonderfully curated selection of film old and new, strange and beautiful. Not to slag Marvel movies, but if you have a taste for literally anything else, you’ll find it here.
