A hidden gem just minutes from Bristol City centre! There are some stunning walks here all year round, depending on the time of year it can be a bit wet, muddy and slippery so I’d recommend some sturdy footwear! It can get a bit noisy at times because of the M32 which runs alongside the estate but you soon get used to it (I grew up nearby) and it’s still very enjoyable and one of the nicest estates in Bristol in my opinion. It's an easy five minute downhill walk from Snuff Mills too which is an added bonus (and if you’ve got any energy left!) The grounds of the estate are quite vast with 2 different walks signposted. There is a fishing lake which you can also walk around but there are often a number of keen fishermen who will disapprove of you wandering around the lake! Everything is well kept and there are plenty of paths to follow but not many places to stop and take a rest (benches etc) The views from the monument of the top of the estate are fabulous and well worth the walk up. Unfortunately due to the nature of the estate is isn’t suitable for wheelchair users of people with mobility issues. After a long walk I would recommend charging your batteries back up in the only local pub nearby which is the Masons Arms, it is Children and dog friendly and also provides some fantastic pub grub and a great selection of hot and cold drinks.

Purdown used to be very little used, and was grazed by horses, sheep and cattle..Kids with stolen mopeds would occasionally zoom about the place , and the woods were extremely overgrown, and used for glue sniffing so felt a bit 'edgy' ..Our dogs LOVED Purdown...none of the new houses were built, and we used to play in the Lake foundations, where there were massive ammonites, far too large to carry home without the aid of a JCB. The dogs died eventually, and Purdown became a place we rarely visited. However, in recent times, we re visited, and the work done on the woods, the orchard and new planting has been so good The beautiful stone wall and 'Park' gates and tree protectors are lovely ...But oh my word.....so crowded! Compared to the 'old' days ...the wear on the turf shows myriad people walk there...and a tarmac path across the meadow made my heart sink..thank GOODNESS there isn't ''shelter'' or heaven forbid, a cafe and bogs...that would be terrible...making the place even more populated. Goodness knows what has caused the population explosion there.... Internet?

What can I say about this beauty of a park minutes away from home. It has astonishing views of the city centre depending where you stand it’s a good view around Purdown by the WW2 Gun/ shelter monuments. It is said to be haunted by the woods next to the Dower House although I’ve not experienced anything by the dower house. (Yellow castle) The lake (fishers lake) is a nice place to go to but please be quiet and respectful of fishermen. There are cattle around which move from field to field so be aware of that. It is enclosed and signs are there to keep dogs on leads in those areas. Please make sure your dog has good recall to be let off lead. Too many dog incidents in this park. Thank you.

Lovely place with vast beautiful fields of green grass, complimented by sloping hills. A large woodland area is great for wildlife, which is quite novel being in the middle of a city and next to a motorway junction! It's a brilliant place to walk your dog, multiple ponds offer a choice of dips for your furry companion to swim. On top of the hill is an interesting structure and a bench to enjoy the view. The large yellow house overlooking the park can be seen for miles. If the weather is good, it'll make a great day out.

Beautiful place. There are many paths & regular made stone paths. All nature here is very natural & some fallen trees have carved animals. Small area has log seats for picnic groups. There are asphalt bike paths which is also wheelchair friendly. Parking is difficult to find because estate has so many yellow lines. You can also find nearby cafe & selective shops.

Hidden gem minutes from city centre. The grounds are quite vast with 2 different walks signposted. There is a fishing lake which you can also walk around Everything seems well kept and there are plenty of paths to follow. We had a picnic on top the hill looking out over the grounds and Bristol. We took a blanket as there are no tables and just one bench.

Made the mistake of living in the Dower House for a couple of years. Don't judge a book by its cover. Thoroughly dreadful place to live. Poorly maintained, no management, heavily in debt, occupied by some of the most feral, entitled and irresponsible residents you will find, kids and students included. More like a glorified council house.

Lovely walk in a very otherwise built up area. The little forest is lovely and you can walk through and get to snuff mills. There are various hills to climb if you wish. There is a wheelchair accessible path but very steep at one end. Lovely place to wall dogs and let kids get their energy out. There is a lake there too.

Quite a nice place if you like long walks, not much shade so worth bearing in mind during the summer months. The area has a few interesting historic relics and a bit of nature too if you're lucky. Unfortunately in our wisdom we decided to build a motorway through it so suffers quite badly from noise and air pollution.

  • AsabaYT

Really nice! Great variety of things to look at with massive grounds to cover, great for a good walk, jog or cycling! you won't be disappointed. A little difficult to park as there’s not a designated car park and although the trail was a bit hilly in places it was a very pleasant walk with great views over Bristol

  • Wes Baynham

Really Nice park close to the center of town and easy access to the M32 motorway. It's a bit hilly but you have great views, wooded areas and even a duck/fishing pond! Ideal for family or walking or even running. Very close to Snuff Mills and the Avon Valley walkway for a nice walk by the stream and weir.

  • James Brooks

There are some amazing walks here and (with appropriate footwear) it's lovely all times of year. Bit noisy because of the M32, which is a shame, but it's still very enjoyable and one of the nicest estates in Bristol in my opinion. It's an easy five minute walk from Snuff Mills too which is a nice bonus

Fantastic local resource 270 Acres of woods and parkland the remains of the Obelisk, and the Broomhill Gate are all Grade II listed. The woods contain the Beaufort Memorial, the cold bath, a stone tunnel, and a partially derelict stone tunnel with rusticated entrance arches, all also Grade II listed.

  • Philip

Beautiful, generous green space perfect for dog walking. I count myself very fortunate that my daily bike commute takes me through here. There is no path lighting so it can get very dark, fantastic views can be had from the hills - note the M32 is very noisy so I wouldn't describe it as tranquil!

  • ANN LIGHT

Great walking area for walkers, families and dog walkers with a variety of walks around and excellent views on a good day Some areas have marked routes but even on a busy day it will not seem crowded as there is plenty of space. The only down side is the drone of the motorway

  • Dexter Hill

Massive estate perfect for a walk with a dramatic Bristol landmark and 300+ year old wood. Water logged when visiting in February though but goats grazing on the grass up by Purdown so makes for a quirky afternoon walk out this time of the year!

  • Lauren Pritchard

A great open space to explore. Lots of different walks possible and a great place to go and see a sunrise. We stood up by the monument and got a great view. I'm sure standing by the BT tower would have been a fantastic view too!

  • Andy Langdon

An excellent public space with wildflower meadows and woods. There is also a lot of history here with the Dower House and its associated features and remnants of WW2 air defence works. A great area for wildlife and people alike.

  • Jacqui Nichols

Amazing place for exploring with the Children, climbing trees, lots of adventures. Great place, Steve England and others keep this place tidy. Also love walking our dog, and many others that I do for my job at Lounge2Lead

  • Dave Knott

Beautiful area for a bit of fresh air - don't forget your wellies in winter! You can drop down by Duchess lake & link up with Snuff Mills & on to Oldbury Court Estate of you want to turn your stroll into a long un'....

  • Jake Holland

Absolutely gorgeous park. I walk here almost everyday. They've now introduced cows and goats up here to "Re-Naturalise" it back to ore war conditions. So be aware when walking your dogs up here to keep them on leads =)

  • Steve Berry

Great park for dog walks, nice bits of open grass and some wooded areas. Only complaint is it could do with a few more dog poo bins. I entered from the Romney ave side and there's usually parking on the street.

  • Matt Redmond

Lovely place for a walk. Bigger than you think. You can almost forget about the roar from the M32, which runs past it. You can go under the M32 though to continue your walk along the Frome to Eastville Park.

  • Lukas Genutis

Beautiful place a bit outside the city rush. Lots of free space with greenery and water. In summer/spring this is a relaxing and wonderful space! And Yellow castle in front of it looks majestic at night!

  • Lea

You forget that you're in a city as the nature looks so pretty and there is so much space. It feels more like a trip into the countryside. Perfect for exercising, walks, yoga, meditation, dog walks...

  • G S

Great spot to stretch the legs and walk your dogs....but for those wet days, certainly bring wellies or some boots or something like that with good grip as it can be very muddy, and steep in parts too

  • Albany Bradley

Lovely area to walk, open green space, parking available. Shame it's next to the loud motorway but that doesn't detract from the views and atmosphere

A great place for a casual stroll, cycling or walking a dog. Plenty of space for everyone and picturesque views.

  • Peter Lawson

Beautifully large park with wonderful views across the city. Open areas as well as large wooded areas makes for great exploring. One of my favourite places to go running.

  • Leslie Davison

Super views right across the city. Efforts are being made to clear the brambles and restore the natural grass lands. I like what is being done but not everyone agrees.

  • Nick Hibbs

Lovely place to walk the dog and see some of the sights over Bristol. Keep an eye out for roaming cattle, goats and the many groups of professional dog walker packs!

  • Anthony Jones

I walk my dog here on a night and it is populated by rabbits deer foxes and badgers aswell as toads this spring making their way back to the lake for breeding season

  • Tom Seaman

Great place to visit during a warm and sunny day. Wide open spaces are perfect for walking with your dog and the tops of the hills have a great view of Bristol.

  • Ben Walker

Unfortunately the motorway does spoil it a bit, however it is beautiful enough to warrant 5 stars. Plus, if you go into the woods, you can barely hear it at all

  • Neil Harper

The small fishing and duck dam is a hive of activity in the summertime and the walks in the woods are filled with enchantment. Good for walking and cycling.

  • Emma Taylor

Great place for long walks, if you walk up the big hill towards the old telecom tower you can see the old ww2 bunkers... really great to see alot of history

  • Rory McFadden

Great walks through the fields and wooded areas. Nice views of the city. Bring your fishing rod and pass a few hours by the pond adjacent to the motorway.

  • Rob McFadyen

I was on a coach and passed it, looked pretty interesting. No idea what was in it till I browsed the interweb - good going on the reviews though everyone

  • Analia Figueroa

Fantastic park, especially to go for walks with dogs. Downside: No cafes, toilets nor shelter. Still and amazing place to take your four legged friends!

Such a great open space, and although it's next to the hum of the M32 there is plenty of wildlife and walking there is great for your mental wellbeing
