"Interesting concept"
Went here on Saturday for my first eating out experience since giving birth about a month ago. My husband and I sat down at a spot nearest to the washroom as I had to change our newborn. Moving around, standing, and sitting down has been a struggle for me due to postpartum stitching and an infection; I’ve been in and out of the hospital for nearly 3 weeks now. When my husband went to wash his hands, a group of three women with a person with disability rudely asked me to leave and push my stroller up the stairs to the seating area above as this was a “designated handicapped spot”. I was baffled by this. Not only am I a new mom with my own health limitations but I was also holding my newborn in my arms. Nor did I see any signs indicating that this was a handicap spot. Also there was accessible seating outside so I am not sure why I was asked to leave when they could be sitting elsewhere themselves. The woman in the wheelchair was the only one of the three who was not opposed to my sitting in that spot and suggested sitting outdoors. I felt so ashamed for the sake of those other women, and they were standing in front of me and glaring me down for not getting up and rushing to give up the spot. As soon as my husband came out, I told them they can have the table and asked him if we could leave. Absolutely disgusting how they had the audacity to treat me this way without any consideration for my personal accessibility concerns. I expected better, especially from women. Just because I’m not visibly injured or incapable does not mean I deserve to be bullied out of my seat. Not every disability is a visual one. I have no complaints against Alforno, just wish they had clearer signage for seating for people with disability. I want to share my experience in case this group causes issues for anyone else in the future and for staff to be aware of them as well. Gross behaviours need to be called out and I wish I did so in the moment.

A fantastic place to stop for treats that are not only delicious and well-made but also priced affordably! I have an affinity for cafes and bakeries, and whenever I’m travelling I make a point to stop by one wherever I am. Having stopped in Calgary for a night, I arrived rather late and found that a lot of bakeries that were recommended to me were closed. Luckily, Alforno was the only one open in the evening hours, and I’m glad that I ended up coming here to satisfy my sweet tooth. The cafe decor is very chic and cute, with a classy feel to it but nothing to make you feel out of place if you stop in for spur-of-the-moment snacks. I did not order any of their food, but their pastries are the stuff of dreams and they have a vast variety available! I ended up with an earl-grey macaron, a mini lemon meringue tart and a chocolate tart, which I cannot recommend enough! The chocolate they used was very decadent and lush, and I was happy to find that unlike some bakeries, the tart crust wasn’t super hard. The meringue on the mini lemon tart was also very soft, and the macaron was well-made. As much as I enjoyed myself, I docked a star as despite most of the staff being very friendly and accommodating, one staff member in particular seemed to be in a bad mood and was rather rude to me when I was trying to find seating. (They do have reduced seating due to COVID restrictions, which is per the norm, of course.) Luckily the other staff members were happy to clear a table and get me seated promptly before my drink arrived! They can get busy, and since they do take reservations, I will be sure to make one the next time I’m in town, and I suggest to anyone planning a visit to make one as well.
A great place for meals or just desserts with coffee. Very intriguing desserts on display for $6 - $7. Coffee is well priced but the price shoots up to >$8 for anything complicated (e.g. pumpkin spice latte). Those premium drinks may very well be worth the price but the price is too high for me. You pay first and then seat yourself anywhere. Going for celebration occasions with a big group could be challenging because of the initial attention on the ordering/seating process. The atmosphere is both welcoming and classy. You can be dressed up or not, be alone, be on a date, be young, be old - it's really for everyone. I have really liked every time I've gotten the soup of the day. The staple mushroom soup that they have on the menu is just okay. The mushrooms are immersion blended so it's a thicker soup and not a uniform smooth consistency. If you want a "cream of mushroom" can of soup experience, this is not for you. The gnocchi was quite salty. I probably wouldn't order it again but I would try another pasta. For breakfast, >$20 is pretty steep for eggs benedict but the price fits the neighborhood. I prefer the baked goods they have by the counter for breakfast. I also like their bread. I haven't been disappointed by any of the desserts. I think the desserts are really well priced and look very special. There's not too many places nearby selling cakes like that.

Went in simply to get a soup and sandwich to go. After I go in and order, the person helping me just asks to step to the side and wait. Fair enough. I end up waiting 15 minutes before I ask if my order has been misplaced or forgotten. The person helping me says 1 moment and disappears in the back then waddles around looking for my sandwich for another 10 minutes. She then lets me know that there's no more caprese sandwiches (they are displayed in a glass case so I could see there were 2 left at the time I ordered them) and offers to get me a new sandwich. At that point I had been waiting 25 minutes for literally a soup and sandwich to go so I say no as I don't want to wait any longer. She offers me a refund on just the sandwich and processes it. Really frustrating experience. I would have expected a refund on the soup if they wanted to retain me as a customer as I literally waited 30 minutes for a soup to go. That being said the soup was bussin. Good on the kitchen for redeeming this experience but that being said, I likely won't be coming back due to the service. PS the lady helping me may have been stoned. Her hair was disheveled, she was moving super slow and she never cracked a smile or changed her tone once even after she made her mistake.

Interesting concept. It seems like Phil & Sebastien's meets Good Earth here as a concept. It has the modern look of Phil's but the baked goods and meal items of Good Earth. When you walk in you are greeted by a friendly lady at the counter with a wide variety of tempting treats in yhe display cabinet. You can order right away if you know what you want or show your Covid19 passport and ID, get a table place holder number and find a seat upstairs. The odd part of the experience is that at your table there will be a QR code that brings up the menu on your phone. Once you have found what you like, UNLIKE a restaurant you have to go back downstairs, line up at the till and then order from the lady who welcomed you in the beginning. At least they do bring the items to you, but it is strange not to have a prominent QR code upon entry or more of a push to order from the lady at the front to order first before getting your seat. It would reduce the customer movement in the building which would likely be safer in these Covid19 times. The Café Mocha was great as well as the cinnamon buns! Their Kahuna Pizza and the Cauliflower appetizer is amazing too! It made for a fun an eclectic experience.

I recently came here on a Saturday for brunch, and the food was delicious! The price you’re paying is definitely evident in the portions you’re ordering. However, I did not like the attitude of the waitresses. Our server was doing the bare minimum, and the other employees (an asian lady & the guy in the pink polo) that served us were doing the waitresses’ jobs more than themselves. We even had to ask another waitress for our bill and she told us that she’d go call our server for us. When my dad spoke with our server she mentioned that it was considerably dead for them, and they’re usually busier. But that statement really just made me question their service at that point. A 20+ minute wait for the food to arrive & a server that was barely making an effort to serve her tables during a time that was pretty dead. That just doesn’t make sense at all. Also, the water jugs seem to be somewhat filthy as if they’re not being cleaned properly, maybe it’s just me, but just wanted to put that out there. Last note, their lighting fixtures also had spider webs on them, perhaps a good dusting might be helpful. Anyways, it’s a decent brunch spot with good food.

I’ve been to Alforno twice now. The first time we came, the food was decent and the service was terrible. We decided to give it a second try and the second time was worse than the first. We arrived just before 11am, had to ask twice who was serving us and waited until 11:40ish for someone to take our order. There were a number of employees standing around be unproductive yet no one to take our order. Not enough servers, too much support staff (folding napkins, etc). We finally got our food around noon. My partner had to take a sandwich to go because he was going to be late for work due to the extended wait time. When I tasted my soup, it was ice cold. I asked the server if it was supposed to be cold, he said he didn’t know and brought it back to the kitchen. He brought me a new one which was only a few degrees warmer… still barely edible. The server was fairly abrasive, unapologetic and overwhelmed. We brought a friend who is visiting Calgary for the first time. Needless to say, we won’t be returning to Alforno again.

Typically Al Forno is one of our favourite brunch spots (Turkish Eggs are amazing) so we decided to go there for lunch today. For a downtown lunch location on a weekday you expect the service and food to come out fairly quickly, unfortunately for us this wasn't the case. Food took over 30 min to come out. We spoke with the assistant manager who let us know that one of the dishes was burnt so they had to remake it which is understandable. The person who had ordered the pizza had to leave before is arrived to go back to work. The assistant manager offered good customer service and provided us with two coffee cards and apologized for the wait, which was really nice of her. The main issue was actually the food. We ended up taking our food to go and when I went to have my mushroom soup it was awful, the only flavour was overwhelmingly cumin and cloves and the bottom of the second pizza was burnt. Not sure what is up, as Alforno is typically really good but this experience and food was subpar compared to other visits.

Rather busy hip/bougie brunch spot with many seating opportunities that seemed to appease a clientele of 20s-30s yr olds (although any food place is never truly age restricting). Have not had the chance for a dine in experience yet but from the take out one, it was very good. Extremely wide selection of sandwiches to sweets to baked goods to order out. This also includes a lot of different types of drinks you can order as well. I enjoy the atmosphere here along the white walls and abstract lines. Food pricing here is on the slightly higher side - proper meal will be around $18-20. Baked goods can vary from average of $6 and cake slices/pastries at approx $6-7. The service was standard and nothing that stuck out. Speaking on baked goods and croissants - very well done especially if you have them heat it up for you. It's flaky and buttery - the textures and taste you would expect without anything else fancy to it. Simple and straight to the point. Many more things to try in the future.

Absolutely a place to come at anytime of the day. I was impressed with the kindness, treatment and professionalism of the entire crew working at this place. Lovely to chill alone, with family or for a business meeting. It's my first time to visit the city of Calgary, but definitely I'll save this place as one of my top favorite places to come every time I'll visit this city. Very cozy place, fresh bakery and food. Time to be served (very efficient and quickly managed) Thanks for the treatment (again) and I wish you all the best and continue with this successful business. The key of this successful business is your lovely team work. Well done job guys!! Regards, Antonio Alcantara Granja

Amazing pastries, cakes and tarts. Would highly recommend it if you are after a tasty treat, but they really fall through with the coffee and tea. I have tried multiple times to get a good drinking and each time, I am disappointed. Last time, I got an Iced London Fog, and it was literally just a glass of milk. It's actually just a glass of milk. There was zero taste of tea in the drink, and I just took it home and made my own. The Chai tea has no kick or spice and is very lacking. The latte is just bad. Their coffee is extremely over roasted and leaves a burnt taste in your mouth. Like I said just get a one of their tarts go find some coffee somewhere else.

I frequent this restaurant often and have always found their staff to be in different. But today was particularly poor. After spending on desserts for a dinner party, I expected to have the pastries package nicely in their usually very beautiful boxes. However, the girl that helped me put the desserts into a plastic container and did not seem bothered. When I requested one of their special boxes, it seemed to be a great inconvenience. I was so put off by the experience that I didn’t even notice that she just gave me the boxes with no bag. Their Pastries are wonderful. It is a great neighbourhood restaurant but I must admit I will think twice about spending my money there in the future if the service remains indifferent.

I’ve always loved Alforno as a brunch, lunch or coffee spot. They no longer have their line divider so it’s confusing as to where to line up to place your order. They also don’t have their duck sandwich anymore which is a shame as that was my favorite menu item and basically why I go back. Having said that I tried their avocado toast with eggs on top. My gf had the breakfast sandwich and she said it was delicious. I love the bread here. They definitely do that right. It’s a little pricier than other trendy cafés as there isn’t much service here since it’s cafeteria-style. We had a breakfast sandwich, avocado toast, an iced latte, and London Fog. Total was $51 including tax and tip.

Pros: good location, open on weekends, variety of food choices, patio/dine-in options, host was friendly and welcoming. Cons: pricey, slow services (we were there for late brunch), our server was “distracted”/“snobby” - had to get his attention to order and pay, food was okay (expected more for the price). See notes for vegetarian, gluten-free and kid-friendliness. Ordered: - Creamy wild mushroom soup x 2 - Insalata sandwich

Alforno is a great and popular place for a sit down brunch (indoors or outdoors) or to grab a few pastries as a snack or for entertaining. This time, we had the: - Carrot cake (it was unfortunately on the dry side this time) - Caramel apple profiterole (soft pastry, caramel cream was not too sweet, but would have preferred more apple flavor for balance) - Pumpkin spice roll cake (strong pumpkin spice flavor with smooth cream cheese filling) - Raspberry passionfruit tart (soft pastry shell, passionfruit and raspberry flavors came through and were complimentary to each other) Overall, their flavor combinations are enjoyable. Definitely have a sit down if you have time!

Was so hyped for this place but it just didn’t deliver. The venue is gorgeous however they failed with the food. My husband ordered Benedict with two extra eggs. The extra eggs came separately in two separate bowls not on his Benedict meal like he implied. Which meant there wasn’t enough hollandaise sauce to cover his ‘augmented’ meal - in addition, he ordered fruit salad as his selected side and they served the fruit salad on the SAME plate (which was actually a bigger bowl) as his Benedict so of course the bread soaked up all the fruit salad juice ♀️ WHY Alforno!? Basic food preparation and serving principles Also, they got my meal wrong too but that’s another story
This place was packed when we went on a Friday night and barely managed to get a seat. The outdoor patio is nice, although the cushions were stained and dirty. The food was quite good, I loved the meatball and the bread, it was the perfect amount of crunchy. The chicken chizo sausage dish was definitely lacking in flavour, it was a tad bland. The desserts looked a lot better than they tasted, but I don’t think I would try it again. The sorbet here was a little below average and the matcha latte was a tad too bitter for me. But overall, the main entree’s of food were pretty good.

My recent visit to Alforno Bakery & Cafe was truly disappointing. We decided to try three different pasta dishes, and to our dismay, two dishes were served cold, which was a major letdown. The pasta itself was lacking in flavour and quality, making it a rather unappetizing experience. However, the dessert we ordered managed to shine amidst the disappointment. It was the only saving grace of the meal, with its well-balanced flavours and textures providing some relief from an otherwise disheartening dining experience.

We were here yesterday and ordered an omelette, a hot chocolate, mocha, and a cheesecake. The cheesecake was SO good. It is a smaller portion so we’d order two of these next time we go in. The omelette with cheese topping was good but it was mostly the sourdough that made it so much better. The sourdough at this place is amazing. Unfortunately the hot chocolate was cold but mocha was good. The service we got here was top notch. We got seated fast and the servers here are so friendly and welcoming. We’d definitely go again when we are in Calgary next time.

Get yourself a table pre-booked if planning to visit on weekend...gets really crowded by noon time. Could clearly know what was all the hype after being there just in a minute...(with such delicious scrumptious brunch dishes, servers were running around the cafe - Heaven!!) Luckily we just needed table for two so did not have to wait long. Mouthwatering dessert menu and honestly, one of the best mocha I have had in life (had to tell for half shot of chocolate though as I don't like too much sweet taste with coffee) Chatty servers and great recommendations by them. Worth going but don't plan finishing your work here. :D
Absolutely lovely establishment. It is a great spot to go for business meetings, study, or just a casual meeting with your friends! The lighting here is great, and their food is quite succulent. Generally speaking, the vibe here is what continues to draw me back. To note, their baked goods are quite lovely for those woth a sweet tooth. Definitely recommend this spot for people in the area. It is conveniently located next to the park and river, so you can always enjoy your drinks/foods there.

The atmosphere on it’s own is worth your visit! We had the fun guy pizza upstairs. We asked for black pepper for the pizza. The ladies were so professional and helpful we didn’t even notice when the black pepper sprinkler was put on the table (WOW!) with zero interruption to our conversation! The pizza was so yummy and the crust ohhh mamishka! Then we had chocolate hazelnuts, raspberry chocolate tart with iced mocha outside on the patio, and let me tell you we enjoyed every bite of it! Highly recommend this place for any day of the week!
It’s a fantastic neighbourhood gem! The bread is perfection and every bite of food reveals attention to detail and passion! It breaks my heart that the espresso is so not in line w the quality of EVERYTHING else this cafe has to offer. If they got their espresso game up,(I believe the bean choice is the culprit not the barista!) this would be an undeniable 10/10. I had the smoked salmon Benny-awesome! I will definitely go back, but will just stick to regular coffee.

I walk along the river every day. I often feel like grabbing a coffee and snack on my walk so I veer off the trail and head to Alforno. I have noticed however, that some of the baked goods are left out beside the till without a cover over them. Many, many, many people come to the counter to pay and involuntarily sneeze or cough over the top of the baked goods. I can not bring myself to purchase a baked good after witnessing this. Please keep your baked goods behind the glass or in a covered container.
Disappointing. If you're going to charge $6 for a croissant, it better sing and dance. Unfortunately these ones are on par with the $1 grocery store variety. The apple pie muffin has no apple pie filling or resemblance - just a plain muffin with some crumble on top. The employees were unfamiliar with menu items (didn't know whether the muffins had filling inside or not). Sucre, Yum, Good Bread, etc. all have better quality and better prices.

Waited at the counter 5 mins when they had 5 staff on the floor. Was served the worst espresso I've had in years (no crema on it... tasted aweful). That said, the "Holy Cow" ice cream sandwich was delicious. Overall it's an ok place, and I've had good experiences at their first street market location. Probably just a bad barista. The rest of the food looked good, but for a place that roasts their own beans, they should pay more attention to how their coffee is brewed.

We came there with company of 7 people. Ordered coffee and deserts, however, host said that it’s not possible to have a table, because we did not order any food. To be honest, I was chocked. Very unhappy with this situation, cause it was our place for Saturday morning breakfast after running. After this, I do not recommend to visit. In Calgary you can find other place with more friendly staff.

With a place like that, they should be the best in town instead they don't have coffee spoons. When you ask them to give you one, you are getting a wooden stick or soup spoon. Their premade sandwiches are excellent. Need to get here early, the sandwiches are limited, ran out of the duck confit sandwich the day I came. Pasta are also fresh and delicious. Of course their desserts and pastries are well worth the price. The venue is also nice.... I'm a little biased as my wife designed their trellis and the curtain wall frame.
Delicious cheesecake with salted caramel and cappuccino, a table needs to be reserved because there are a lot of people. You can do this when you come and wait 10 minutes and your table will be ready. Good service .

Service proposition has lost its way. I have been visiting since this business opened, however will stop now. My habit has been to buy desserts as a host gift however the indifference of staff, the decline in presentable packaging have soured the experience. Moving on

The best cafe in the neighbourhood . The almond croissant is to die for, although the vanilla iced latte was not upto the mark but the breakfast sandwiches are big and heavy and so filling considering the price. Worth every dollar ! The ambience is quaint and posh. The service is great too!

Alforno has been a family favorite for over two years. Easy parking, great service and delicious food. We enjoy the coffee specially. Update: Alforno continues to be my favorite place downtown and one of the very best in Calgary. Great service (thank you Caio), clean, modern European and and the coffee and food remains superb. Great job guys!
I love this place! Food and desserts are amazing! I have tried pasta, pizza, croissants, cakes, and coffee. All great so far.

Great food and atmosphere. Had breakfast here and it did not disappoint. Took their pastries for take out and those were delicious - Nutella croissant and jalapeno and white cheddar biscuit (generous size!)

I went to this place to have a cup of coffee. I ended up going for a hot chocolate. It was a good hot chocolate. We also tried the carrot cake and the vegan almond tart. The carrot cake was amazing with the cream cheese icing and the almond tart was good as well.

Never had meals from here. Had some desserts as we installed the cooler here when they first opened. Wow best desserts I have had in my life. Wish I still lived closer to the city. Will come here every time I'm close. Seriously so good.

Everything was good. We arrived at 10:30 am Saturday and had to wait for 5 minutes. When we left, the line was long. Everything was good, especially dessert items.

Food was really good! And the space was nice , my only complaint was the ice coffee I asked for light ice and I got way less drink? My cup was 3 quarters full when they handed it to me. Besides that I had a fine experience.

Nice location and decor. But the common reviews and feedback regarding the food and drinks being pricy is spot on. Basically you are paying for the location and decor. I paid over $30 for a slice of avocado toast and a latte. If you are a foodie, I won’t recommend coming here as there are better options for less.
Thank you for great food, great staff, great experience. I really enjoyed my time here and would recommend it to anyone. Thank you Phong for a great brunch experience :)

I use to love this place, I order almost every other day a simple side of egg & potato rosti. Not sure what made the chefs think it’s okay to send me burned dirty food after spending nearly 50$ and waited about 2 hours on DD delivery. Hopefully an improvement happens. I won’t be returning but thanks.
Love this cafe! They have some amazing coffee and food. You’ll love the place and their ambience. The service is efficient and fast too. Must visit.

It's pretty close to our place, thus we usually go there for afternoon coffee. These days, most of the time it's crowded and you may feel they are short staffed. And it affects their service. Generally, it's a good place for having coffee or dinner. Yet better to go there when it's not crowded.
I’ve been recommended this place by a few friends. The location is definitely winning but overall it’s just a nice little cafe. The pastries choice wasn’t the best but coffee ☕️ was good. Nice and friendly stuff.

Alforno has the perfect atmosphere for a weekend brunch. The food is good and their baked goods are delicious. I’ve been here multiple times and the service is good. I recommend going for a walk around Eau Claire after your meal here!

My daughter ordered her wedding cake from here. She wanted a cheese cake and she got a moist, delicious 6-layer cheesecake. We picked up lattes and mochas when we went to pick up the cake. This is a popular spot in Calgary with good reason, everything is delicious! I will be back again.
Amazing bakery items. Team members were very helpful and really a great place to hangout for a snack or drink!

We came back twice in a week. Great vibe. We loved all the food. Dishes are packed with flavours. It‘s simply tasty. Dessert is amazing. We tried the chocolate tart, very fulfilling for whose who have sweet tooth. Definitely will try their brunch next time.
Over $20.00 for a large beet salad which was 90pct arugula and maybe half a beet diced up. Sorry Alforno but this is ridiculous. Please do better.

It was my first time to dine in at Alforno and it was great! I can’t believe we’ve never eaten here before. Everything we ordered, from pizza to salads and appetizers, were all very tasty and delicious! We’ll definitely be back for more :)
The place looks nice and bright inside. The hot chocolate was yummy. The brunch was not the best, the eggs where cold. We got to wait around 45min to be served.

The salted caramel cheesecake is rich and indulgent but oh so worth it. You don’t know what you’re missing if you haven’t tried a slice yet.
The Turkey sandwich combo with mushroom soup is good. The Apple caramel tart also very nice too The staff there are very helpful. …
