This is our 8th time at Benjamin’s and it truly have never disappointed with its consistent deliciousness! As we were finishing up with some tea I heard a young boy, perhaps ten years old, dining with his parents on the other side of the restaurant exclaim ‘I’ve never tasted anything better in my life’. I couldn’t have put it better myself Latest Back to Benjamin’s for my brother in laws belated birthday dinner post being freed from the latest lockdown. Being our fifth visit we know and love the menu but tonight the Mongolian beef was outstandingly good. I think it’s actually my new favourite rendition of this traditional Chinese dish due to its super flavoursome sauce. Thoroughly recommend Recent We dined at Benjamin’s for my sisters birthday recently and it remains as delicious as ever. We found the menu entirely unchanged and ended up up ordering much of the same from our previous visit and the consistency shone though. Impossible to have a bad meal here! Further update We hastily brought my brother in laws birthday dinner booking forward three weeks when the government announced new lockdown restrictions and had one last supper. We revisited all of our favourite dishes and one new one the birthday boy wanted to order, beef rendang. This was a well executed rendition but it is of course traditionally a dry curry and BK excel in their flavour packed sauces so they will always be my preference. Check them out in lockdown for their daily takeaway packs Update We headed to BK for my mums birthday last night having tried it almost a year ago and remembering it fondly. We kicked off with the chicken satay skewers and prawn dim sum. A great way to start the meal and special mention to the phenomenal satay sauce. We knew at that moment roti would be a must order for more of that yummy sauce! Props to the interior designer as they’ve absolutely nailed a tranquil ambiance and the function room with its soft shades would be perfect for a baby shower event. The main space has a real Hampton’s feel to it with the pretty lighting resembling a fluffy cloud against a soft painted sky. But back to the food. The coconut black tiger prawns were a real showstopper. Served in a coconut these giant prawns were absolutely delicious and the flavours lingered on the palette long after after they’d been gobbled up. We’ll definitely be back Original review I was invited to try Benjamin’s Kitchen and what a lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The dishes were mostly Thai and Chinese influenced and involved all the classics. Everything sounded so good we found the mains hard to chose as there’s quite a lot of variety. We went for the teriyaki chicken, chicken pad thai and chilli honey black pepper beef. The meat in all the dishes was high quality and not the stringy kind you often find in Chinese restaurants. In fact nothing about this place resembled a typical Chinese restaurant. The interiors were just gorgeous. A bright, crisp and clean space downstairs and more of the same beauty upstairs with function rooms available. Light wood floors set off the bright white walls and pastel painted feature walls by artist Chloe Planinsek. The five spice calamari was coated in the lightest of crispy batters and absolutely sensational. The seafood fresh as can be. Good quality food at reasonable prices with a large variety of veggie and gf options what more could you ask for? How about dessert! The dessert offering is small but it’s enough to satisfy the sweet palette and they are actually looking to expand their dessert range going forward. We had a couple of slices supplied by the very tasty Butter Mafia. The passion fruit one was exceptionally delicious. The coconut panacotta was also fantastic. Texturally perfect and plenty of flavour. Literally a faultless meal

There's nothing like Friday's and public holidays rolled into one. Especially the day before the AFL Grand Final. We made the most of the day off with a visit to a new Asian fusion restaurant called Benjamin's which is located in Alphington just down the road from Ivanhoe. It's an unprepossessing little place which is easy to miss if you're driving past. The decor was quite neutral but very calming with maybe 12 tables or so on the ground level near the bar. We had possibly the best seat on the house by the window which didn't hurt either. My bench seat was very soft and thoroughly comfortable. Benjamin's didn't let us down foodwise with a number of absolutely delicious dishes including san choi bao, salmon/prawn fritters, salt and pepper calamari (perhaps a little more capsicums and onions could have been included for extra crunchiness and flavour?), snapper fillets and spicy rocking. Their coconut panna cotta with berries dessert was also to die for. Their drinks were a touch on the pricey side but that's not unusual nowadays. The service was quiet, friendly and thoroughly professional. Unusually for many restaurants, their unisex toilet was sparking clean and well fitted out. Regrets? Yes. I should have ordered another panna cotta dessert.

I had the worst soft shell crabs that I’ve tried. Bad flavour and clearly not fresh. They were covered in very unappetising breadcrumbs too. And to top it off, on the menu it says it comes with an apple salad but it just came with a pile of sprouts instead! How can you justify this?? Some sprouts instead of an Asian apple salad and charge the same price? We also had the chicken satay.. it was gross, the chicken wasn’t good quality or it just wasn’t cooked very well and the whole dish was just a mess and not good. Oh but the Asian greens dish fried in soy sauce and sesame oil was nice. But it’s hard to muck that one up lol. I mentioned the lack of apple salad to the waiter when I was paying and he just gave me some awkward weird response about how he’d “tell the chef” and then gestured for me to pay. I shouldn’t have to pay for that! Why should I have to pay for something that I didn’t order and wasn’t on the menu? You can’t just mess up the dish and put some sprouts on and charge the same price. Overall a rubbish westernised, bastardised version of south Asian food. No care or passion put into it and no remorse or refund if they are called out.

This place is beautiful on the inside, we sat on the second story and it just felt calm and peaceful. It’s definitely quite expensive but the food was good but not amazing for what I was hoping. The entrees were definitely the best out of everything. The mains really lacked flavour but we’re still enjoyable enough. My biggest regret was ordering the panna cotta, one bite and I had to stop and I LOVE dessert. The jam which must be homemade which you would think would have been good but it was full of all these spices so it was chunky and we literally pulled a full clove out of our mouths. It needed to be sieved but when we questioned the waitress she said she should have warned us like it was intentional for it to be like that. We didn’t get a receipt shown to us at the end but we don’t think it got removed on the bill which ideally would have been the professional thing to do but not a huge deal they did offer us the mousse instead but we were full at this point anyway. The finish on a positive, the staff were super friendly and that’s always a plus!

The food here used to be terrific, it is now tasteless and the quantities small. We ordered Heaven Duck, almost no duck was included. The special fried rice at $16 contained 3 small prawns, the chicken green curry was tasteless with almost no chicken and the Jasmine rice a solid gluggy mass. We live nearby and used to love this restaurant; it has either changed hands or changed the kitchen but now it is a restaurant we will never go back to again. When it first opened it was as good as the nearby Paladar and one of the best Thai restaurants around; now it is as lackluster with tasteless food as most other nearby Thair restaurants. The food is now more like poor Chinese food rather than having any similarity to Thai food. We went back recently, hoping the food had improved but it hasn't, it is still very poor. Small squares of vegetables look like they came from a frozen packet. The food was tasteless, the duck had no flavour and little texture as did the other selections we made. It is a Chinese restaurant now trying to present Thai food and has wrecked it.

Me and my mum came here on a Friday night for one of our last meals in Melbourne before heading home to Ireland. The restaurant was quiet at first (we arrived at 6 so not surprising) but they were really busy with takeaways which we found a good sign. Then the restaurant filled up nearly full so we were impressed with how efficient they were dealing with so many orders. The service was fantastic from the beginning with friendly wait staff greeting and watering us v quickly! Then we nearly ordered too much food as the menu is pretty big with some amazing sounding dishes. Thankfully our server calmed us down and we narrowed it to a starter of oysters (fresh and nicely dressed) and 3 mains - papaya salad (a must) chicken mango curry (it was OK but could have done without!) And crispy pork belly (my mums fav) .. we had mousse and ice cream for dessert which was my fav course by far even tho I was stuffed! We will 100% be returning during our next visit to Melbourne and we have recommended BK to our family in the area so safe to say, we are big fans :)

● August 2023 ● ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 stars Still the best luksa I ever have in Melbourne. Good service, nice place and great food. Definitely becoming a repeat customer. We had prawn toast special tonight and of course luksa noodles thank you for your service. ● May 2023 ● ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 stars I've been here a few times but this is my first review. Always heard that they have very good Luksa here. I wasn't disappointed at all. Luksa is tasty and consistent as we order every time we dine here. We tried soft shell crab brioche buns which was nice. Prawn dumplings were good too. Only mark one star down as roti was tough and hard. We only had a bite or two but couldn't have it anymore. Although, peanut sauce was very nice, a little kick to it too. We let staff know about roti when we came up to pay at the counter and he offered to make a new one for us to takeaway but we were full and didn't want it. Definitely recommend and we'll be back again for Luksa noodles.

My wife and I visited Benjamin's Kitchen on the spur of the moment for dinner and were so happy that we did so. As we hadn't made a booking the staff suggested that they would find us a table for 2 upstairs but when my wife mentioned that I was unable to climb stairs, they hurriedly made some changes and offered us a table downstairs. This was done without fuss and we were most happy. We ordered their excellent crispy eggplant dish as well as their hawker style chicken satays, simple yet tasty fried rice and a serve of green veg. The eggplant was as tasty as we remember from a prior visit and the satays were juicy and filling. The food was served fairly quickly which suited us. The restaurant as always was clean and had a great relaxed vibe (but for two loud and potty-mouthed young men next to us). We will most certainly return for their coconut tiger prawn curry...and their friendly service. We heartily recommend Benjamin's Kitchen and thank the staff for a pleasant evening.

Benjamin’s Kitchen is a two-storey light filled Pan-Asian restaurant tucked away in Alphington. Visiting for lunch we ordered the crab buns, San Choi bao, green chicken curry, seasonal vegetables and rice. For drinks we opted for a Pinot gris and lychee lime soda. Despite visiting on a busy day, staff were friendly and accommodating and our food came out quickly. Everything we ordered was delicious. I loved the crab buns, the soft shell crab was nice and juicy and worked beautifully with the mayo, cucumber, lettuce and coriander. The green chicken curry was another great dish, it was full of flavour and was comforting and perfect for a cold day. Overall I was really impressed with Benjamin’s Kitchen. I loved the clean aesthetic, the staff were attentive, prices were reasonable and most importantly the food was delicious. I would happily return and recommend checking them out if in the area. I rate Benjamin’s Kitchen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5.

We LOVE Benjamin’s kitchen! Honestly we would eat here every week! The food is delicious. The service is amazing and so quick! We recently came for my mums birthday with two kids (4 and 6) and everyone had the best time. The kids love the shrimp fried rice and devour that every time. They even ask if we can go to Benjamin’s or get takeaway. I reckon we have been there maybe 20 times all up including takeaway. Highly recommend!

Green chicken curry is tasty and portion size is very decent. Heaven duck is ‘just ok’ nothing to rave about, over powering Hoisin sauce. Also ordered a portion of coconut rice which is priced at $4.00, which is definitely what I got (a portion). Got given my takeaway and saw a small clear tub - I went back to question if they had my order correct, the young lady said ‘yeah sorry that’s the coconut rice’ whilst I understand restaurants businesses has certain overheads but this is an insane amount to charge for an average tub of mushy ‘coconut rice’. I struggled to ‘portion’ the rice with the two mains I had ordered. Pretty annoyed! I ‘would’ possibly consider trying their other mains as I enjoyed the Green curry but I’ll be making my own coconut rice ahead of time. Not in a rush to go back to Benjamin’s.

  • Andrew Patterson

I have a very short list of dishes in Melbourne that I can count on to make me feel better no matter how low my mood, and the rockling laksa from Benjamin’s is on it. The green curry is also superb - it was so fresh and flavourful it actually made me feel a bit sorry for all the past green curries I’ve eaten. The rest of the menu isn’t far behind, either - I’ve gone through about half of it over the last few years and everything’s been excellent. We generally get takeout from here but it’s also a lovely place to dine in, and the staff are a very friendly bunch.

I really wanted to like this place, as we had just moved to the area and was keen to get a few regular options for easy dinners out. The service really was great, and the restaurant in nicely decorated, however the food was extremely underwhelming. Asked for recommendations from the waitress and we were told the 'Son in Law Eggs' were a must try. Ummm...they were not anything special at all. Just eggs with boring flavouring. We also ordered the 'Heaven Duck' which again was nothing special, just duck in hoisin sauce (really??!) and the side of asian greens had absolutely no flavour at all - coud hardly taste any soy or sesame oil.

  • Allan Clayfield

Funky restaurant with a modern take on Asian cuisine, good GF and vegetarian options. Good cocktail and non-alcoholic options but only a few wines by the glass, it's a bit limited on that option. Inexplicably frugal on the tofu in vegetarian dishes but the trick is to ask for a double service and offer to pay extra for it! Not an issue for me but was frustrating for my vegetarian daughter until we worked it out.

STAY AWAY! I do not normally write reviews, but this time i could not ignore. FOOD POISONING - ate a Prawn Dumpling and within 1 hour i was sick as a dog! 1 week later and i'm still not fully recovered! I knew as soon as i ate it there was something seriously wrong with what i ate. Rang to inform them of what had happened and what i ate and the did not care less! Was told someone would contact me and was still waiting! i use to love this place, i will NEVER eat here again! Apart from being served spoiled food, the whole meal was over priced and very average! Stay away is all i can say!

We have been here many times over the years but this is our first visit in over 6 years. The food ordered was all delicious and a few standouts were the crispy eggplant with Szechuan vinegar dip, hawker satay chicken skewers, crispy rockling with Thai chilli jam glaze and the slow cooked beef brisket rendang. The service was friendly and professional. Happy to return to explore the menu.

We've eaten here a couple of times and the food is always delicious but this latest visit the staff went out of their way to make me comfortable as I had hurt my back and was unable to sit normally. Without saying anything, they noticed my discomfort and brought cushions to assist me getting into a position to eat more easily. That kind of hospitality is most appreciated. Thank you. The food was nice but nothing special, we had the Heaven Duck after reading so many positive reviews on here - it wasn’t a very big serve and really wasn’t that tasty or interesting to me but my partner liked it. I had the green curry which was nice but not the best I’ve ever had. I’m not a fan of the upstairs room, I would rather have sat downstairs. I did observe some of the meals brought to other tables that looked quite nice

Ordered a beef rendang and coconut rice via ubereats. Beef Rendang protion was reasonable but the coconut rice portion is laughably small and definitely nowhere near enough for one person and not comparable to other restaurants in the area that serve larger sizes for the same price. Also the rendang is not traditional at all. As a 'curried beef' it's ok taste wise but it's far too watery to be a traditional rendang which is supposed to be a dry thick-sauced curry. Overall disappointing and wont be ordering from them again.

Love this place, and love that it is out of the city centre (and selfishly so close to home!). Coconut Black Tiger Prawn curry served in a fresh coconut that really should be eaten too and Heaven Duck - can't go past them. Yum. Great atmosphere. It would be lovely if it could be BYO, but certainly didn't stop us.

We have been regulars for several years now and are always delighted with the food and service. Our favourite entrée are the Crab Buns, and for the mains Heaven duck, fresh sea perch, red curry (duck) and recently the Malaysia curry laksa. @benjaminskitchen is ah-mazing! If you want the freshest Asian fusion, head over to BK in Alphington. Cosy, with beautiful decor and wonderful service, the prices are reasonable as the quality of food is really high! We ordered the Malaysian Hawkers style Satay Chicken (one of the best Satay in town) Thai Red Curry Roast Duck (delicious!) & Rockling with Thai Sweet Chilli Plum (). Everything was soo good! Definitely looking forward to going back to try the rest of the menu.

Very attentive staff (prompt refilling of still and sparkling water for the table) and extremely tasty dishes! We shared the main meals amongst the table (green curry, coconut tiger prawns, sea perch, szechuan chicken, extra side of greens, rice) and they were all beautifully presented and delicious. The highlight was the coconut tiger prawns - served in a young coconut so we scooped out all the coconut flesh to eat as well! Highly recommended.

Amazing food! The coconut prawns were incredible. Lovely ambience, but the 2 star rating is due to the hideously pushy waitress (not the lovely Asian woman) possibly French? Instead of politely telling us it was time to go, she was so rude. It was about 9.50pm, and a 'sorry, we're closing soon' would've been fine. However, the annoyance on her face and her disgusting tone were thoroughly unacceptable. She's really not going to do your business any favours. Very rude woman.

Delicious and interesting food in a bit of a random location. If these guys were closer to the city they would be booked out every night. The laksa was especially delicious. Awesome Thai food and attentive service. Best Thai in eastern suburbs ! My family loved our meals tonight. Cool vibe and fully booked for a Sunday night shows we locals love this place. The entrees were so good, mouthwatering San Choi BAU and crab sliders, for main we enjoyed spicy barramundi jungle curry , steam veggies, coconut rice, top notch Pad Thai with chicken and roti with satay - perfect. Thx Chef we will be back

  • Paul Bullock

Great meals - fresh and delicious. We had satay skewers and san choi bao to start. Rockling and pork belly for mains. Shared the coconut panna cotta for dessert. All fantastic! A very busy restaurant, even on Sunday evening. Another staff member would have made the service a bit smoother. We had a bowl rice delivered the the table and no other dishes for 10 minutes. By this stage the rice was cold and drying.

We only discovered Benjamin’s Kitchen during lockdown 573 and have never had the pleasure of eating in.. but the take away we have had is divine. Their food is a mood-booster. The produce they use is top notch and the dishes are sumptuous. Our favourite is the Sambal Grilled Snapper and the Teriyaki Pan fried Chicken. And their Rockling Laksa is clean, comforting and bloody tasty. Thanks for feeding us xx

I’m not entirely sure about the powder blue decor or the fluffy clouds, but then that’s just me I prefer dark and cosy. The food on the other hand is always gorgeous, have been here a few times now and it never fails to impress. The delicate mix of flavours and perfect use of spice is an absolute treat, service is always spot on too, always there but never too intrusive. Must come back more often!

  • M D

If you like a good Rendang curry, DO NOT order one from here. Worst Rendang I have ever had and not cheap. Curry was basically beef and potatoes in oily water. So disappointing. Our Pad Thai was also bland and the peanut sauce that came with the Roti was offensively small. How could you run a restaurant and not take pride in what your kitchen is serving? Will never order from here again.

  • Brent James

Beautifully decorated venue, food took a while but was lovelly. $42 pp was certainly not worth it. Would not recommend for groups. We were given two seperate rooms which were isolated (not told) we had to deliver our own drinks to guests (people couldn't purchase own drinks) and the manager and owner were extremely rude. Don't accept a large booking if your unable to meet THE BASICS.

A hidden gem. The food here is amazing, and the staff are always helpful and friendly. There's a great mix of asian-inspired food that's next level. The restaurant has several floors, so don't be fooled by the small space downstairs - there's plenty of room on the second level. It would be great for small groups, family dinners or just for a couple.

Terrible food. Ordered a rendang. Large chunks of fat, tiny pieces of meet, under cooked potatoes all swimming in a flavourless sea of oil and chilli (it's meant to be a dry curry). Not sure how it is this place gets so many good reviews ... possibly one of the worst curries I've ever been served up and believe me I have traveled!

The breakfast squid is one of the best dishes in Melbourne. Ask for chilli sauce on the side Service from the blonde British waitress was second to none. They’ve obviously spent a lot of time working on their wine list, everything was spot on which is hard to come by these days. Will be making this our weekly tradition!

We had a party in one of the bigger rooms upstairs. Communication was excellent in the lead up, the staff were super friendly, attentive and accomodating with special food requirements, the food was delicious. I would highly recommend.

Great service, atmosphere and excellent food. Had a very relaxing lunch. I had the beef stir fry and my husband had the crab bun for main. Will definitely come back and work our way through the menu.

A delightful experience, a decent portion on every dish, and great service. Our favourite is the Breakfast Squid, which is very crunchy. Another one is the chicken ribs, which is the little one's favorite. We will recommend this venue , and be back

Serves south-east Asian fusion cuisine with a seafood focus. Been going here for a couple if years and it's consistently good. Ingredients are fresh and well prepared. The rockling laksa is superb. Friendly and attentive staff too. Certainly one of, if not the best restaurant in Alphington.

The salted egg yolk chicken ribs are amazing! We’ve had the rendang, fish, and curry (forgot the exact one) before and they were good too. Have been back a few times. Staff are friendly, and the owner is a very nice guy. A local gem.

I've been looking all over Melbourne for cereal-crumbed anything but prawns. Imagine my glee when I found this place and their cereal squid! Been back many times with friends and family since, and tried nearly everything on their menu, not once have we been disappointed.

Great quality of various Asian cuisines. Somewhat unattractive location on Heidelberg Rd, but it is well compensated by the well-executed food. Can recommend the Pad Thai and breakfast squid, which is an unusual, but tasty combination of squid and sweet cereal.

  • Kate Marshall

Has been a favourite restaurant for years. Food is consistently good whether you are dining in or getting take away. Favourite dishes are the chicken wonton soup, crab buns and breakfast squid. Staff are wonderful.

Love this place. BUT it has been the same menu since it opened. We have done every dish 3 or 4 times at least. Whilst we still love it, we are getting bored. More importantly, the cooks must be really bored. Alternatively, how about some weekly specials.

Even on Melbourne standards, this place holds up with amazing food we've tried almost everything on the menu and it's super yummy. The only one that I'd probabaly stay away from is the pad thai which is really bland but everything else is sensational

  • Stacey Kirkby

We ordered through menulog for pick up and the meals were so disappointing. Portion sizes were ridiculously small compared to the exorbitant prices. $21 for 6 soggy prawns and a wilted lettuce leaf. What a joke. Will not be ordering from here again.

Wow, am very impressed the quality on offer here. picked up two dishes, staff were friendly and our dishes- Hawker Style Mee Goreng and Vege Laksa were both excellent. Luckily it's my local and I'll be coming here a lot from now on.

  • Amanda Scott

My favorite Thai restaurant! Really great vibes, atmosphere and aesthetics with the cloud lights, sky scene painted walls and clean crisp feel. My favorite dishes are the Green curry, Rockling Sake, and Pad Thai. Highly recommend!

  • Lorraine Hétu Manifold

Absolutely outstanding food. We were a party of five and we shared all the dishes. Every single one was absolutely delicious: butter chicken, fried tofu, Mee Goreng, Teriyaki chicken and seasonal Asian greens. I highly recommend.

  • Mz M

Wow, absolutely delicious! I'm not a local, decided to order on my way home from work was very impressed. The flavour, the freshness, the texture. I'll definitely be coming back again! Thank you for a meal that I'll remember.

Dinner here last night was some of the best Thai food I’ve had! We did need to get in, order and have the meals out quite quickly which the staff were very accommodating of. Food and drinks were so good!!

  • Maral Madani

Comforting food at its best. The restaurant itself has a very cosy and clean vibe to it - the service is great and staff are very polite. The take out is also great, on-time and very generous portions.

  • Caroline Miller

Love Benjamins food. Fresh, really really tasty with modern slant of asian ingredients. The service is professional always and the atmosphere I find relaxing every time I visit.

We've enjoyed their take away during lockdown, but it was great getting back to the restaurant and celebrate a family birthday. Great delicious food as usual and staff friendly.

We had a banquet for seven adults. Food was excellent and the two vegetarians at our table were catered for perfectly. Plenty of food and came home with doggy bags.

Beautiful food. Great service. Cater really well for allergies and intolerances. Really great atmosphere and good value for money. Have nothing bad to say at all!

  • sharon b

It was fine. A bit blande in flavour. Salt n pepper calamari didn't really have any salt or pepper on it. Serving size was really too small considering price.

Benjamin's Kitchen, located at Heidelberg Road, Alphington: Lovely decor. Excellent service. Delicious laksa. I was pleasantly surprised. Highly recommended.

Delicious! Fabulous food and flexible re special food needs. They look like they are closed for some reason from the outside but don't let that put you off!
