I had a couple of people suggest this shop to me because it was close and they had good experiencs there. I dropped my Schwinn off because I hit a deep pot hole which damaged my wheels and flattened my tires, which was my only complaint. Since I had a friend put it together, they noted that something was on backwards that shouldn't have been. Between those two complaints, someone called me up and told me everything that needed to be done to the bike, just to confirm, and I was quoted around $80. When the repairs were done, there were several more items that were apparently faulty with the bike, but I was not informed of before they were repaired. So that $80 jumped to $140. That was very inconsiderate. I know this rapidly gentrified city is filled with people with money to waste, but as a medical student with no income on a fixed budget AND at the end of the school year, that jump in price hurt my pockets more than their average clientele, I guess. I did complain about it to the manager who called me, but alas, in the end I still paid it. Will have to make adjustments in my budget elsewhere. Guess I won't be eating meat for a couple of months. I know nothing of bikes and my Schwinn cost like $160 (it's a cruiser hybrid just for traveling a couple of miles a day to school and back, nothing fancy), had I known it would have cost me nearly the same as the bike, I would have either waited when I had money in the new school year or picked it back up and sold the thing for parts and invested in a new bike. My experience might have been an outlier, considering the average rating, but if anyone else out there is looking for decent bike repairs at a reasonable cost and with transparency with what is being done to your bike, this place isn't it, given my experience. But the bike does ride great, so I gave it two stars instead of one star.

I love this shop. It isn't just one person, everyone I've dealt with there has been just awesome. I went in initially because I was looking to buy a better "around the city" bike than my road race bike. Well, the city chose for me when my bike was stolen while I was having lunch with a friend. I'm tall, but I have back problems, and I still wanted a relatively quick bike with a similar feel to my race bike. They spent an incredible amount of time helping fit me, letting me go back and forth, and generally not pressuring me into anything before I was comfortable. We ordered a smaller frame and a longer stem and seat post to make sure the fit was right, they know their products well enough to mix and match frames and the various components to get you where you are comfortable and efficient on your bike. After that I spent 45 minutes trying on different helmets to get the sizing just right. They were never anything other than helpful and laid back as I decided what I wanted to do. In the end the prices were also fair, especially when considering the level of service. Also, and you might not care if you just need a tire changed, but they are good members of the community. They are constantly involved in pro-bike issues in the area and they are working hard to help more people feel comfortable biking in the city and enjoying the urban riding we have in DC. I bought my bike almost a year ago and I continue to be impressed by them every time I go back, whether to pick up small things, repair a flat, or just see what is going on.

I use a chair to get around. I was in DC for a conference. Sunday night, after 7. Lincoln Memorial, 90 degrees. My tire blows. Pushed a mile on the flat. Broke a number of spokes. Nothing open. Back to hotel. Night ruined. Called BicycleSPACE first thing Monday morning. They had me bring it right over. I stayed in bed at the hotel while my wife ran it over. Fixed! I was back in business. As an FYI: my chair has $6000 wheels on it, with motors in the hub and servos in the hand rims. The spokes are custom, 6" long. They couldn't help me then with the spokes because they didn't have anything like them (and, as a bike shop, not a wheelchair repair shop, I certainly didn't expect them to - heck, 99% of wheelchair shops don't even stock them). I rolled gingerly around my conference with 8 spokes missing on one side. Ordered them in. When my new spokes arrived, I called BicycleSPACE and they fit me in again right away. They had never seen a wheel like mine but it didn't phase them in the least. They treated it and me with great care. Had the new spokes on and the wheel trued in a little over an hour. Couldn't have gotten better service and support. The bill was quite fair. And the wheel has never rolled more true. Now I can finish the week and beyond rolling without fear of collapse. To someone who's wheels are his legs, that means the world. So thankful to find this oasis, far from home, in the middle of my nasty dilemma. I would recommend them to anyone.

This shop compares well any of those that I've used in over 35 years as a bike-commuter. First-rate customer service, friendly and knowledgeable staff. It's local to my office in downtown D.C. Commuting to work one day, a spoke broke. They fixed it immediately, charging only a nominal fee. If that was intended to endear themselves to me, it worked. In June 2013, I brought my 2010 Bianchi Vigorelli in for a lot of routine maintenance: "Service Tuneup Level 2" plus a chain & casette replacement and re-packed hubs. It took nearly a week but that's on me as it's always best to schedule routine maintenance off-season. One gray-beard mechanic has decades of experience; next off-season, he'll be restoring my vintage Bianchi. Today I brought the bike back in because, despite the tune-up, a clicking sound persisted; I was concerned the bottom-bracket bearings were toast. Karen methodically ran checks until she discovered the cause: clip-on pedals that needed a bit of lube. And, showing class and further endearing themselves to me, it was "no charge" given the recent tune-up. Nice work, nice shop, and nice to support a place that employs a smart woman in a guy-dominated field.

Woah! I have been to quite literally every bike shop in DC and over 20 shops in Maryland over the past five years. Without a doubt, Bicycle Space provided the absolute best experience I've ever had in a bike shop. I interacted with Austin and Kate when I had to bring in my road bike for a few quick adjustments. I had just finished building my bike and was still experiencing a couple problems and Austin was very keen to help get to the bottom of them. He spent 30 minutes helping me and answering all of my very specific bike questions. In the end, he was able to fix all of my problems and answer all but one of my questions. Here is the best part: for the question that he didn't know he said he would contact the Shimano reps and get an answer for me! What amazing service and dedication to keeping the customer happy and informed. Needless to say they got a huge tip and a customer for life. Their prices are amazingly fair and they even have basic tools at the front that they will let you use for quick fixes. Definitely go here so you can get your bike serviced properly and quickly by their friendly expert mechanics.

Yeah, this was pretty much the regular treatment you get when you don't know anything about bikes. They take advantage of that like any other shop would, and lie about what can and can't be fixed. I had a wheel that doesn't even have a visible bend in it, and they told me it was so out of shape, it could never be fixed. I fixed it with ease once I watched a couple Youtube videos. The guy who was 'helping' me tried to guilt me into buying a $40 cassette because "C'mon, I got you like 15% off that tube." Yeah, buddy. Great job, you saved me a whole $1.50 on a $141 fix. You're a hero. I also really liked the part where I said I'd replace the part myself, and they exchanged looks and said, "Well, you can't because you need a special tool." That special tool is a goddamn piece of metal slightly larger than a thimble that goes for $8 on Amazon. Unfortunately for me, I went in because I didn't know anything about bikes. Now I do, and I know they're scum. Happy hunting. Edit: Now they've requested that I get in contact with them. I did. I heard nothing back for over two weeks and counting. Amazing job, guys.

This is a review for the former location on K Street NW. I had a couple positive experiences and one pretty awful one. Oh the + side, the mechanics do a better job with customer service than most. I myself haven't encountered the classic Condescending Bike Mechanic Attitude in that shop. They were also involved in the community and seemed to do a good job of promoting cycling in general. Unfortunately the customer service still isn't great. I had a tubeless tire swap go extremely haywire -- at one point the mechanic tried to inflate what was NOT a tubeless tire and tried to send me out the door even though you could literally hear air escaping. It then took them three weeks to contact me after leaving the wheel with them (I was out of the country), and fifteen minutes to locate my wheel when I went to retrieve it. I was told it got lost in the shuffle as they prepared to move, but they could now order another tire (it would add several more days) and I could have the labor done at their other location. Instead I bought a high-pressure pump and did the work myself.

Yo so I just got the bill emailed to me and I was charged for things that where not communicated to me, when I first dropped my bike off my bill was 100 and some change but other things need to be replaced I guess but that was not communicated to me I feel if there is a change in price you should call or email the customer so they can know the price change don’t you think? So now I have to pay 160 more for this new stuff. This shop has nooooooooooooo I mean no communication just excuses I had to call to check on my bike and make sure things where going okay I was told many times that I was going to be emailed or called back with updates never happened I had to call them back but they sure emailed me with a bill the most terrible service ever PLEASE CUSTOMERS IF YOU ARE THINKING OF GOING HERE DONT IT WILL BE NOTHING BUT BAD SERVICE SPEND YOUR MONEY AT A PLACE THAT WILL Service you better DO NOT GO HERE I REPEAT DO NOT WASTE A DIME ON THIS TRASH SERVICE IM TRYING TO SAVE YOU A HEADACHE

BicycleSpace has been my shop for almost ten years now. I used to frequent the K St. and Adams Morgan shops when they were still around, but now I make the trek out to Ivy City because it's worth it. I've tried a few other shops nearer to me in Columbia Heights, strictly out of convenience, but I always come back to BicycleSpace. This last visit was under the unfortunate circumstances of me having been hit by a car while on my bike. BicycleSpace performed an insurance assessment for me, and was very communicative and sympathetic to my situation. Everything was very transparent, and they had thoughtful suggestions for for my recovery, and for what type of bikes to look for when I'm good to ride again. I mostly dealt with Phil, and had a phone call with Robert, both of whom I've had very good shop experiences with in the past. I might not be riding for a while, but this experience has only strengthened my loyalty to BicycleSpace.

I would strongly recommend avoiding this shop, in particular the mechanic Rob. He is extremely condescending to anyone who doesn't know everything about bikes. I dropped off my bike for an admittedly complex job, and was told to expect a quote "hopefully today, but no later than three days." After four days, I called and was told they would look at it that day. Repeated that process three more days, until finally going into the shop. I inquired Rob what was taking so long and he asked me if I "ever worked retail," and gave me a condescending attitude, telling me no shop in the city would be able to take a look at my bike in a week and it would be a month before they could repair it. Ended up taking my bike to another shop (Daily Rider -- highly recommend), who was able to fix it in 10 days. Bottom line, I would highly recommend AVOIDING this shop, as they don't follow up when they say they will and have poor customer service.

  • rh3aa

Gil was very condescending and rude. I got my bike as a gift and after asking to have my inner tubes replaced and to potentially get a rack put on he went on and on about how my bike was a “cheap fake track bike just to look ‘cool’” it was completely irrelevant and literally had nothing to do with the repair. I didn’t ask his opinion he could have just said the rack wouldn’t fit. I’m a young woman sadly I’m used to men speaking to me with superiority and condescension. I thought it was that at first but then I watched him do the EXACT same thing to the man in front of me in line telling him how there was nothing to do cause his bike was “cheap” and then going on some rant about how much experience he has and how much he knows. I treat people with kindness and respect when it’s given . Clearly this person does not. Customer service and kindness goes a long way. The other guy there was nice.

This place was awesome to deal with. I got a flat tire near the Washington Monument with no spare or repair kit. There are no bike shops nearby. So I carried my bike to this store (not knowing anything about it but that it was the closest to where I was.) When I got there, I was sweaty, dirty, and not a happy camper. Two of the store employees came up to see if they could help. When I explained the situation, they told me to bring the bike in and they'll fix it. I declined, stating that I just need two tubes and a bike tool. They sold me what I needed without any problem. They offered to let me use their tools, and were more than understanding. The only reason that I'm not giving them 5 stars is that their selection of bike tools was a little slim. They didn't have any 'alien' tools or anything. But, that aside, they were a pleasure to deal with and I was on my way.

As others have mentioned, slow service and poor communication. I came in for a quick/on-the-spot repair but halfway through the repair the bolt on my front derailleur broke off. I was told that the mechanic would take a look at it the following week to see if he could get the bolt off, or if we had to order a replacement. I checked in periodically and was often told that they would get to my bike and provide an update "later today" and "tomorrow". Long story short, my bike was at the shop a little over 3 weeks. I would have appreciated an honest and realistic time estimate from the beginning. My brakes, which were replaced during the visit, were also squeaky when It came back to me. I would return to the shop only to have the squeaking return after after a day or so. The mechanic often talked trash about REI, but in my opinion they have not proven to be any better.

Gil gil gil, and rob the bob. Worst interactions I've had in any retail experience in at least 5 years. Off the break condescending and rude. Essentially told me I wasn't welcome as a customer. Had to buy tires so unfortunately I persisted. Entire awful experience ended with rob the bob telling me to go back to Arizona. How does one reply to something like that? Where I from/look like etc. is arbitrary. Do the owners of this store have any clue as to what is currently going on? I hope their business fails so someone who is actually from the ivy city area could have a chance at their own dreams. Basically if you want to be talked down to by a bunch of gross unhealthy looking losers, go here and enjoy. Oh I will say. Mr. Bearded mechanic, obviously a good dude. I'd ask him to fix your bike after hours or something. Otherwise I hope their doors shut forever. FOAD

I took my bike (one I purchased from Bicycle Space about 3 years ago) in for a repair yesterday. I can only describe the experience as bizarre - the main repair tech kept talking about how much he knew about bikes (I never asked for that information and never questioned the man's credentials). His tone vacillated between amicable and contemptuous. One of the first comments he made to me was that the bike was too big for me. This was the bike that Bicycle Space staff recommended to me as an appropriate fit when I originally bought it. The repair tech did do a good job making the repair (a stripped screw that I caused) and he did give helpful safety advice. But I left feeling like I had been condescended to ... and I left wondering whether I had been sold a bike that was a poor fit for me.

  • Derrick Beasley

VERY VERY bad Experience, I am highly disappointed in the service I receive today. I came in for a simple derailleur adjustment, I basically just wanted a fine adjustment on top of my adjustment and right off the back they took advantage of me, by lying about what can and can't be fixed to make more money. After it was all said and done. The mechanic didn't know how to fix my problem. But he CHARGE me FULL PRICE because he said he made it better, Which he did not I actually did a better job at home before I brought it to the bike shop. Every bike shop I've been to I was never a charge for something they can't fix. I feel like I was rob after paying 50 bucks for nothing. I live a block away from this bike shop and will never be returning again. PS I would to speak to the owner!!!

I’ll preface by saying I’m not a bike head but went to this shop in my neighborhood after moving to DC because I wanted to make biking my primary mode of transport. These guys spent hours listening to what kind of bike I wanted and how I planned to used it and explained all my options and answered all my questions patiently and thoroughly. I not only bought a bike but learned a lot about bikes and how to take care of them. They got me set up with all the practical locks/lights/fenders etc for a very reasonable price. When I wrecked they fixed it right away and for free (no replacement part needed, just my fenders reattached). I have been back several times for other little things and they always help me right away and keep me riding. I love my bike shop!

  • Janey Saunders-Barrow

I'm giving a two star review because I really liked the K Street location, which is why I was taken aback at the poor service at the Ivy City location. At the K Street store, I bought two bikes and got all my repairs/tune-ups done there. The mechanics there were always pleasant. Out of brand loyalty, I went to the Ivy City location for a repair. I wish I had the name of the mechanic who mansplained to me how my bike rack worked (the other mechanic definitely had better customer service skills). I took my bike to another store where they correctly identified and fixed my loose bike fender. Unfortunately after being a happy customer to the K Street store, I will not be going back to BicycleSpace with their condescending Ivy City mechanic.

  • Aisaku

Rude and ironically elitist. A prime example of exclusionary culture in cycling. A business not worth supporting. "[Laughs] Nope. Goodbyeeee." Except he didn't hang up he just awkwardly hung out out on the line. That's the response of a shop employee to a customer looking for a part to buy for their bike. After calling half the shops in DC looking a mount to put a Garmin cycling computer on a set of aerobars, this interaction stood out as by far the worst. Its probably the worst I have ever had with a retail establishment of any kind. I get that its not a common part, but given that they offer Guru fits at up to $500 a session specifically for TT bikes so its not unreasonable to consider giving them a call. Except it was.

  • Toni Codinas

James has done a fantastic job taking care of my 12 year old Brompton. I use my bike daily for commuting and I had been putting off maintenance for quite some time, in part because things got weird at BicylceSpace during the pandemic. He made a honest assessment of what needed to be done and answered all my questions in a friendly and professional way. The bike was ready when promised, and James went above and beyond in bringing it back to life. I was almost in tears when I rode it back home. It feels like I am riding a new bike! If you have been putting off maintenance on your bike, make yourself a favor and let the pros take care of it. BicycleSpace is back!

  • Kenneth Mack

They helped me out in a great deal with my shoe and pedal issue now I'm back riding again a good shop nice people Conte's over there by Navy Yard and the bike rack all three of nice people but I was going through they was there for me they helped me get back on the bike now I'm riding Steel it's getting better in my situation because I don't let it stress me out my therapist told me to get back on my bike I've been riding my bike I feel a whole lot better I'm overweight but it's worth it and it's going to get better for me physically mentally and spiritually thanks to them for people who supported me thank y'all I love y'all have a blessed day

  • Lee Jahnke

BikeSpace DC used to be my go-to Bike Shop. These guys worked with you and offered options to fix things. Their repair times were honest. But in the last few months, these guys have cut corners as they deal with being overwhelmed from the pandemic. I've gone by the shop for parts or quick fixes and been told flat out "No". As in "No, we can't repair anything right now". and "No, we don't think you should install that part." This attitude isn't so much "Hey, we know better." but "We just don't have the time for you. Essential repairs only" So, save your time and money from trudging out to their remote location and go to a bike shop closer in.

  • Darren Buck

Ever wondered, when you're shopping at a small local biz, who and what your money is going toward, besides the stuff you're buying and the rent? At BicycleSPACE, it's going to plan and publicize massive community party rides, it's going to an owner (Erik) who can be found at community meetings and volunteer days and advocacy efforts helping make his neighborhood a better place, and it's going to a staff that cares less about getting you on one of their new bikes, and more about just getting you riding, however you choose. It's very easy to get to know them on one of their rides or Twitter or an ANC mtg before you even step foot in the store.

  • Marc Pulliam

Not sure how they have 4 stars. These guys are very unprofessional. No type of customer service I call and ask if they sold bike pedals the response was were a. Bike shop how rude. Ordered a bike and had it shipped to be assembled which should had only taken a minimum of two days. My bike has been there over a week and all they can tell me is that they are backed up because there mechanic was tboned. They said they would follow up but I have not received any follow ups. At this point it will be faster to cancel my purchase and have a bike shipped to a different shop. No focus on customer service here don’t say you wasn’t warned

  • Dave Miller

Sad to see the K street location close, but everything below also applies to the Ivy City location. Hope to see a downtown location open up eventually. --- The best location of the best bike shop in DC. Despite the boutique appearance, this location has the best selection of Bromptons, Brooks, and most other things. Also the most experienced repair staff anywhere. All my bikes get serviced here, and the staff understands the little things. Another shop scoffed at the idea that I wanted a particular alignment to my fenders, whereas BicycleSpace staff understood right away and installed and delivered just what I wanted.

  • Jason Sutton

So riding on an east coast solo bike tour and my Aciom rack mount fails a few miles from downtown D.C. and as the rack/panniers fall to the ground they take out my rear derailleur hanger. Bike broken. I called BicycleSpace and they say come on in and we will fix you up. Neal helped connect me to service where John checked for the parts and confirmed before I Lyfted my way over. John had me rolling in less than 90 minutes. These guys are really good, shop is super friendly and lacked any trace of that bike shop pretentiousness that can be unwelcoming. First rate, exceeded-my-expectations experience!

  • Jeffery Moore

I have used this shop a couple times. The first time I felt like the value was high and that the mechanic who helped me was great. Second time, different mechanic and he was nice and all, but I find $37 for 10 minutes of work to install a 9 dollar part (that I previously bought and brought in) to be a bit much. I expected $15-20 since for an experienced professional it was a quick job, and the first time was about the same amount of time and cost that much. From now on I will spend the extra hour of my own time to save the $37 if at all possible.

  • Joey Abrams

This is my favorite bicycle shop in DC. All the know-how with none of the pretentiousness. Their selection is great; lot's of nice Cannondale and Felt and assorted others. I've had a couple friends purchase bikes from here and their experiences were all stellar. I haven't purchased a bike from this store (yet) but when I brought my Scott SUB 10 in to have it fitted with a trailer coupling, one of their mechanics (Rob) recognized it from 8 years ago when he rebuilt my drivetrain. Impressive. He knows his stuff and is tons of fun to talk shop with.

  • Ben Thornal

I came in with my four year old today - have been riding around DC the past two days on rented bikes. Stopped by to look at a Brompton folding bike. I've read a lot about them, but wanted to see one hands on. Rachel welcomed us and took us through the tour of the Rolls Royce of folding bikes, invited me to ride it, then took us down to the basement to show us other models, and several of the features. She was very helpful, and made it a great experience shopping at Bicycle Space. Fantastic service and a great feeling in the shop!

  • Trey Eight

Rob is disrespectful rude person , REI is better in all aspects of biking service , I go to bicycle space only when I know what i want . I stop Dealing with the service department years ago . REI IS BETTER .they have member discount and better prices and far far far far better service . Rob talks down on REI because he knows there better . I like the owner and the cute girl and Tyler . But Rob should be fired . I will avoid this store . I spend my hard earned money not to be talked to in belittling manner .

  • Richard Goldman

After a minor spill in the fall, the rear derailleur of my 8-year-old Trek wasn't holding its shift. Neil fixed it quickly & correctly, for a reasonable price. Love having a small neighborhood shop (read: not a chain) where the folks know their stuff. Update: Brought in my 25-year-old Aquila for an overhaul last month (clean & lube, replace the cables, new tape, new bottom bracket). Again, a shout out to Neil, who provided exemplary work. My ride is once again whisper quiet & smooth as silk.

  • Kris Sooklal

The staff was very friendly. The man who worked on my bicycle was very helpful in explaining to me what I should do to take care of my bicycle, even above and beyond the flat tire repair that was required. I will definitely come back to this store for future repairs. The cost of my flat tire repair was $37.07, definitely worth the trouble I was having with my bicycle up until now. The $37.07 included a disinfecting fee due to the pandemic, which was explained up front and was reasonable.

  • Cassandra Spratt

This place is amazing. I'm a bike novice but commute almost everyday. My cassette or freewheel (I still can't keep it straight) broke mid commute and a friend recommended them. My bike was fixed within 30 minutes of walking in the shop for $30. They made other helpful recommendations for improvements to my old street bike to make it safer and a better ride. I'm bringing it back next week for the upgrades. Tyler and Rob were super helpful. And plenty of parking at the Ivy City location!

  • Jack Morris

Maybe it was just the particular employee I was speaking too, but he could hardly understand my nubile questions regarding bike mechanics, maintenance, and statistics. This store does not have many bikes and they are more expensive than surrounding bike shops. Even though I'm a bit of a hipster and was looking for a single speed commuter bike, they couldn't give me any good information about getting a bike well suited for me. This shop clearly tailors to aesthetics more than function.

  • Kourtney Nilsson

We had a very friendly and helpful staff person that sold us two bikes and a lock. She asked if we wanted the lock mounted on and we said yes. She said it would be about 30 minutes, so we took a walk. When we came back to get them, we learned they they let someone else take my bike out on a test run; the bike that I had already bought. I'm upset that they would let someone take my expensive property out without asking. But I do really like my bike, so three stars it is.

  • Mary Gordon

I dropped off my bike 2 weeks ago and still haven’t heard from them about an estimate. I’ve called 3 times to check and was assured I would receive a call back by the end of the day. I still haven’t received any info and will be picking up my bike tomorrow to take it elsewhere. I understand they are under-staffed, but it’s unfair to set expectations for customers that can’t be met. I still haven’t gotten a quote or any info from them and my bike has been there 2 weeks.

  • carl knudsen

Was on vacation in DC came into the store on the off chance to see if they could source a tire for my Alex Moulton bike. Left my number didn't think anymore about it. A week later I get a call saying they were unsuccessful in tracking a tire down after calling around to other bike stores, they even sourced the tire manufacturer and called them directly....I was blown away by BicycleSPACE's customer service considering I did not spend a penny in there store.

  • Akili Hutchinson

The front desk is several feet away from the front door. I was told via a sign at the entry to stand and wait. Waited for several minutes without even a greeting or heads up that someone would be with me shortly. The employee yelled from the upper level about standing in the doorway. In which the barricade at the front informs you to do so. To many other bikes shops with great service to have to deal with poor customer service like that.

  • William Stoll

We just moved to DC and have been extremely impressed with the staff and services provided here. My bike looked almost brand new after being assembled and serviced, and the final price was significantly less than what was quoted when we dropped it off. On top of this the staff kept us informed throughout the process, and even helped us find new places to ride in DC. Definitely would recommend them and we will certainly be coming back

  • Michael Karpman

I am trying to think of something critical to say, otherwise this review will sound too good to be true. But as hard as I try, I can honestly say that I have never had a negative experience at BicycleSpace. The best aspect of going there is talking to head mechanic, Paul. Not only is he the most knowledgeable mechanic I have met in my over 40 years of bicycling, but he gladly shares his wisdom with customers as he fixes their bike.

  • Larry Lee

Went in for a brake repair expecting to have to leave my bike overnight (at least). Much to my surprise they took the bike in right away and I was gone in less than 30 minutes. I was told they try to take care of quick fixes right away because bike storage space in their shop is at a premium right now. It was a bit pricey but hey, no complaints; they took care of me right away. I'll be back when its time for more substantial work.

  • Sarah Miller

One of the best bike shops in the city. Every time I visit they have exactly what I need and the brands I like (pedro tire levers, oury grips, brooks saddles, etc). As an added bonus, the mechanics and sales people are welcoming and positive, not pushy about cycling. One of the only bike shops I have had the pleasure of visiting that seems to be exclusively staffed by women and people of color, a rarity in the larger bike world.

This place used to be good. However, ever since Covid started, the team members at the store are typically rude & condescending in their interactions. I suppose they believe that they can talk with customers any way they like since they are one of the few stores open right now. They need to understand that there are others shops open right now, I would recommend Gearing Up Bicycles instead - they're cheaper & more polite.

  • Jon Markman

These guys do not have their COVID procedures worked out, despite us being 2 months into this whole thing. I'd give them a break if they were apologetic about the disorganization and poor management, but sadly their tone is more "its not my fault, just deal with it." I wish I could say it's just COVID getting in the way of good service, but honestly... They've never been polite or accommodating here.

  • Brad Ward

These guys are great. They quickly fix whatever needs fixing and are always willing to suggest anything that may need replacing in the near future, if you want them to. Personally, I would rather fix a few things once or twice a year than fix a different thing 7 or 8 times a year. For this, I love them. Paul is especially knowledgeable and eager to share his love and expertise of bikes. Great shop.

  • Mike Carr

Many bike shops are plagued with pretentious staff. This is NOT the case at Bicycle Space. The employees are all super friendly and helpful. As an added bonus their location in Ivy City is easy to get to from most parts of DC and there is almost always easy parking right out front. This shop also sponsors many fun bicycle events in the area, such as the Saturday Cupcake Ramble lead by Lionel!

  • Monica M

Was recommended here after breaking a spoke near Mt. Vernon. They were super helpful and fixed it within 30 minutes and even checked/greased my chain. Haven’t had a spoke break before to know if it was in a higher or lower price range. Total cost of parts and labor for the one spoke was $45. Would go there again if needed last minute work in the area. Gil and the team were great.

  • Stefan

I had a rude and unhelpful experience here. I came in trying to get brake service on a cargo bike. The mechanic looked at my bike and said they've been having 'problems' with bikes they 'don't sell' and therefore would not fix my bike. They said I should check out a store on the other side of the city. Sounds like they are happy to sell you something but not happy to service it.

  • Ron McNeely

Went in today looking for a new hybrid to join my road bike. Rachel was amazing, the entire staff really - every question I had was answered. I came out with a different bike that I went in to test ride, road several bikes and they helped me modify/customize/add what I needed. Ended up with a SWEET Cannondale Quick CX1 that I can't wait to ride. Great team they have there.

  • Ben DoesNotReadThis

The customer service is terrible. If you call the store to schedule a fitting, they tell you to email. If you send an email and a follow-up, you never get a reply. If you call back, they only take your information and never keep their word to return a call. I'm done trying to spend my money at this business and have found better quality service elsewhere and close by.

  • kelly freespirit

I called over the phone during the COVID-19 pandemic, the gentleman who answered the phone was very nasty and rude. He also tried to emphasize that I was unable to pay for a bike because it was over 1000 dollars. Which I would have had no problem paying. I will not be returning or calling here again it sounds like poor management to me. No thank you.

  • Melanie Goldberg

This place is absolutely awesome. My derailleur, derailleur hanger, and chain broke and I was looking at hundreds of dollars to fix it. BicycleSPACE worked with me to get the price down and returned my bike in pristine condition. Good communication from the mechanics throughout the process too. These guys make it easy to support an indie bike shop!

  • Brad Sargent

My back tire got stolen off my bike I brought my bike here with very low expectations about getting it fixed. But Gil had everything he needed and had me back on the road within 24hrs. So glad they have stayed open during this covid situation. **they are taking serious precautions with customers and equipment so be patient if you go to the store.

  • Carl Mitchell

Wow. I have been here before during pandemic, but boy, have they stepped it up. So much variety. I was a kid un candy store. You know that feeling that you gwt when you don't need any of it but want all of it. Maybe they didn't step it up but I just didn't have an accurate picture because covid was hard for everyone. Definitely check them out.

  • Victoria Hadfield Moshiashwili

AMAZING service! I took in a used bike that I bought off craigslist and they helped me get it fixed up. They told me that it didn't need some of the work and parts that I thought it might need -- so they saved me money when they could have easily sold me stuff I didn't need yet. I've had a couple of emergencies that they've fixed on the spot.

  • Sony TOAO

Popped in to get my Brompton fender wheels upgraded and got some detailed tips on maintenance and "no nos" to protect my investment. As noted, YouTube doesn't tell you all the pitfalls that influencers won't mention. There are bike shops closer to me but I think it's worth the drive for the expertise. And oh, the price was very reasonable.

  • ramon turner

Bought a 26'' tube today from this establishment. It split along the seam as soon as I put it on my bike. I returned it to the store within an hour of purchase. They refused to replace the tube or even give me a discount on another one. I will be making all my future purchases at the bike rack and avoiding this place like the plague.

  • William Harris

Rob is quite possibly the best mechanic in the city. I had a very rare issue with my gear shifter and I was at a loss as to what best to do. Rob was very communicative and supportive throughout the whole process and even found a way to save me a bit of cash for the work. Thanks again Rob, you are the man! …

  • Ryan Cahill

Stopped here to get some service done and had a really bad experience. The guy working on my bike spent much of the time complaining about the lack of help at the store, how busy he was, and how none of the customers knew anything about bikes. It was prototypical bike shop condescension. Made me not want to come back.

  • Tamas O'Doughda

I've had spokes replaced for like $30, and a quick google search substantiates this memory (usually $25-35). This bike shop charged $60 to replace a spoke, $45 alone for labor (15 min.). Unreasonable. I chose them because it's close to my work, but will actively avoid it, despite any convenience of location.

  • Peter Phau

I had a bike fitting with Rob. He took excellent care of me, thoroughly explaining bike mechanics and how changing my bike geometry would impact and improve my riding. After changing my bike's arrangement, he took the time to make sure my bike was functioning properly and assembled to his exacting standards.

  • Elise Foster

Bicycle Space is great however they have moved to Ivy City apparently. I stopped by here today as my bike conveniently broke down near the convention center only to find they are closed and have moved to Ivy City. I suggested an address edit so I hope it goes thru quickly so others don't have the same issue.

  • Frank Tamborello

Rachel spent hours with me until I found the perfect bike. Tim made sure it fit perfectly and did a great job getting it ready to roll. He even taught a one-hour basic maintenance class, even though I was the only student that evening! All of my other interactions with the other staff have been superb, too.

  • Vince

Easily my favourite bike shop in DC. Took my Brompton in for repair. The engineer was top notch - superbly knowledgeable (and I think the only guys in DC who can fix a Brompton) and helpful. They’re moving a bit further out to ivy city shortly, but I’ll certainly be making the trip.

  • Sharon Dean

Sensational bike shop. We were visiting town and dropped in to ask about bike routes in DC. They were very helpful and gave us a map. We then came back to see if we could use a hose to wash our bikes and James went out of his way to help us and cleaned our bikes for us. Thanks guys!

  • patrick

i love these guys. they did a great job on my bike fit in 2019 and, today, were the only shop in town to carry the part i needed (i've checked six other local shops). they even answered the phone and sold me the part i needed — on a day they're technically closed! above and beyond.

  • Luke Galloway

Extremely slow service and poor communication. It took them a month to just box up my bike to have it shipped. They told me it would be a week and I had to call several times and they kept pushing it back. Do not recommend going here if you want anything done in a reasonable time.

  • Andlib Shah

Went to several bike shops in DC before finding a home at this shop. Rob spent hours with me before I pulled the trigger on a bike and never once felt a sale was being pushed on me. He also spends a lot of time with you for a fitting. Entire staff is also pretty awesome.

  • Dan Halpert

Top-notch customer service on the phone and in store. They're happy to take the time to discuss all of your needs with you without making you feel rushed. Nice collection of gear, clothing, and bags for your bike. This has quickly become my go-to bike shop in DC.

  • Christopher Anderson

Bought two commuter bikes from this shop. Incredible staff, sales and repairs. So happy to support this local business. I’m not a professional or even serious bike rider. Unlike some other shops in town I’ve never been talked down to. This place is just the best.

  • Saguache

I'm only in town for a couple of days and flew in with my new Brompton. Phil had a replacement seat tube that works better for my size as well as some odds and ends that make this incredible ride fantastic. Super nice dude with a life time of bike experience.

  • Diana Mallon

Amazing staff and service. I brought my bike in for a tune-up, knowing it needed some extra work, but even when the damage was more extensive than I thought, they got it back to me quickly. It's never ridden so well, even when it was brand new. Thanks guys!

  • healthy healing

They took us right away we came in with two bikes. The rechained my daughter's bike. Checked my inner tube. Gave us an estimate if we need an innertube in the future. Sent us on our way. Welcoming, reasonable, angriest service. Highly recommend these guys!

  • Jess Grannis

Super helpful and sweet. Took my bike in for a fix because I tried to repair a flat tire myself and messed everything up. Not only did they fix my bike for super cheap but they also gave me a lesson so that I am better able to fix things myself next time.

  • Kimo Jones

Blew out my front tire this afternoon while downtown. So embarrassing walking my bike to repair my flat -first one this year. And i left my flat kit at home today, instead of in my seat bag. In and out in 20 min. Tire repaired for $20. I am on my way!

  • Melinda Cavicchia

I took my bike for a tune up after it had been in storage for a year. The guy spent 15 minutes checking things, put air in my tires, and then told me I didn't really need a tune-up. And he didn't charge me a penny! They have my trust and my business.

  • Tozer Hammond

Wilson did a great job on my brakes and was also good about inspecting the frame, etc. Dropped my bike off at lunch and had it back at the end of the day. Had been hunting around for a new bike shop for repairs, and I've found it. Good people here.

  • Ryan Jones

Stopped by recently to look for a new commuter bike. Large selection of bikes in multiple sizes. Bikes available at different price points. The owner took time to talk bikes and I was able to test ride a few bikes. No pressure. Friendly service.

  • Evan Timms

Excellent service and super knowledgeable. They’ll fix a flat with no notice, and discuss bike and parts options for as long as it takes, with no overt persuasiveness or salesmanship. Also happy to order whatever you need. Highly recommend.

  • iavaj jj

Just came from there to fix a front flat on my brommie, ended up putting on new schwalbe marathons, changing a shifter cable, & a sprinkling of sorcery dust to top things off.. now this Brompton is riding as quietly & smoothly as whatever..

  • Jeff Welch

Terrible shop and terrible customer service. I had a simple parts order and they kept telling me they were taking care of it and then they left me hanging for months. After they told me they would take care of it, I would have to check in

  • Mac Gaulin

This is the best bike shop I've been to in DC. Everyone is super knowledgeable; they're not pushy at all and generally just excited about bikes and bike culture. They also recommended some great trails and social rides around the district.

  • Nick Webster

BicyleSPACE is a wonderful, friendly, downtown bike shop. I stopped in to look around and a knowledgeable staff member took the time to show me around in a no pressure manner. When I am in the market for a new set of wheels, I will be in.

  • Patrick Macy

Unmatched Integrity. I have been searching high and low for a touring bike. I have been to many bike shops in Maryland and DC which pushed me to buy gravel bikes that didn't fit either me or my budget. Rob pointed me to the Surly Disk

  • Javien D

Staff are friendly. They're abiding by CDC's recommendations for social distancing and are experts. This is my new go to bike shop in DC for all of my biking needs and products for repairing my bike and doing maintenance on it myself.

  • Joseph Nowariak

I went to BicycleSPACE looking for an obscure part for my Cannondale. Ben and the service team did some leg work with Cannondale to get it in, and were very friendly through the whole process. I will definitely be a repeat customer!

  • Maria Isabel

Love this shop. I went in there for the first time last year looking for my first city bike and they were incredibly helpful, informative and non judgmental of my lack of knowledge. Every time I've gone back it's been the same way.

  • Ana R.

Do yourself a favour and don't come here. Rude and nasty. This is the very first time in my life that I leave a review in google, and I am doing it to save you some time and prevent you from having a very disappointing experience.

  • Paul Butler

My bike had two flats. I decided to try BicycleSpace since it was open and near a Metro station. I expected to leave my bike there for days or weeks. Instead they had the tires fixed and me on the road in 20 minutes. Incredible.

  • Caroline Beuth

The people are nice but everything is overpriced. I was charged $80 for a break change. Over half of that price was labor for 15 minutes. Go to Bicycle Pro Shop in Georgetown for honest service with and reasonable prices.

  • Ben Proshek

Great little local bike shop. They've got a nice selection of quality bicycles and parts. It's more nicer stuff than basic stuff, and priced accordingly, but it's worth paying for quality stuff. Very helpful staff too.

  • Will Flagle

Love this shop. Haven't had work done here but have picked up parts on a couple occasions. Mechanic staff are friendly, funny, and happy to field my bumbling questions. They've earned my loyalty. Thanks Paul!

  • Sarah Kincaid

Phil was able to get us up and rolling with new lights for our Bromptons. This took a lot of searching and waiting due to the limited parts availability because of Covid. Thank so much for your persistence!

  • Paul Yun

They are, hands down, the BEST bike shop to go to with service needs, and they also have a great inventory of bikes and accessories. If you are within a 25-mile radius - there is no better bike shop.

  • Tom Dickinson

Very knowledgeable, extremely helpful - open to discussing/commenting (and even revamping!) an old bike. Very refreshing, especially when old bikes just get a yawn and a sigh from everywhere else.

  • Eric BRINTET

Very friendly and flexible team. The mechanic specialized in Brompton folding bicycles is passionate about his job and eager to share his (high) skills with you. I strongly recommend this shop.

  • Ryan Brevard

Busted my chain and thought I did the same to my derailleur after getting side swiped by a car. These guys are amazing! Saved my derailleur which saved me lots of money. Charles and Jerry rock!

  • malik tazi

My boyfriend went to pick up my bike that was there for three months. Guess what?! Only excuse was we still waiting for the part.... REI fixed in same weekend!!! Stay away from this place …

  • Jessica Long

I was in the market for a new bike for commuting and racing as I start to get into triathlon training. The staff there was very engaging, kind, and knowledgeable. Definitely recommend it!

  • K

Asked if they could true a couple wheels. Response was a condescending “No sorry I won’t be able to do that for you”. Sorry us common folks are beneath your Tour de France level service…
