We have loved this place since we moved to Camperdown in 1973. It is a quiet refuge in a busy city. Then we found my ancestor was buried here after he was hanged in Movember 1850, His name was Mogo Ungundun. He live with my family and was baptised with their daughter Elizabeth Gard at the church St Lawrence in George Street. He was with them in Kempsey but was left behind when they returned to England after they went bankrupt. He was charged with murder after a skirmish in Northern NSW. The other aborigines were just killed but he was tried in Sydney. He was buried in the cemetery by Rev. Charles Kemp. There is a monument to Mogoin the park in Camperdown. Georgina Whaley
I was bleeding out. Crawling among the scattered dirt lines of a gravestone, I peered away from the group of goth kids that recently shanked my skin with a screwdriver. The blood that was dripping from my excavated torso soon becoming one with the earthworms. Their reasoning for this misdemeanour did seem quite off: Was it my seemingly congruent statement of horoscopes being a complete fad? Or perhaps it was my constant reminding of their daddy issues? One thing that does derive in certainty would be how I'll spend my last breath on this world to someone who reeks of Mango-Flavoured vapes. I stared at the face of god, and only found dread.
The Camperdown cemetery is a tranquil oasis near the busy shopping and restaurants of Newtown. Once in the gates you hear only the breeze and feel as if you have discovered a forgotten place. Often you might have it all to yourself. Everything on its grounds shows a dignified age. It’s a great place to wander, sit and think, or make art. It’s a regular stop for me.
Went here to meditate in the grass because I wanted to practice #mindfulness cause im spergy and do too much speed. However, I ran into some emo kids who where doing nangs, it was like a Pete Steele fan convention. They gave my a durry, I only started smoking to impress my year nine boyfriend lol. Would give it 4.5 but they don't have that option
Boasting more goths per square metre than a Robert Smith concert the cemetery features big trees and creepy gravestones. A mix of kept and unkept tombstones the cemetery is serene and historic. A lovely place to explore the history of Newtown or take a piss when the portaloos are full during the Newtown festival. It has something for everyone.
Well known to locals who can often be found hanging out, running their dogs or having a picnic, this little historic cemetary is very atmospheric. The graves actually extend in to the surrounding park, but the gravestones have been moved to within the walls. Includes menorial stones to the lives lost on the Dunbar shipwreck (1857).
The most perfectly scary cemetery known in inner Sydney. If you truly want to feel the cold fear of death walk through here sometime between midnight and dawn. As soon as you think you are alone you’ll realise your not. All proud Newtown locals have a war story of doing something lewd, crude and rude in this location.
Here lies a lot of stories which are forgotten. The stones are barley readable, because some are two hundred years old! It's a pretty place for photography, not that big, light is good and has a lot of atmosphere in this setting. Dogs are allowed to walk off leash.
This is an urban oasis, a fascinating cemetery, and one of my favourite place in Sydney BUT visitors should be aware that amongst the dog walkers and sightseers there are also a few vagrants and other users of the space who are best avoided.
A old and interesting place to visit and explore. A little overgrown and unkept during my visit, but it was pleasant to walk around and soak in the history there are some very interesting tomb stones.
Amazing place to be buried, ive currently been buried here for 97 years. Quite cool and breezy in afternoons, enjoy going for midnight walks and scaring drunk patrons walking through the park!
Peaceful old cemetery, full of charm and character, with lush vegetation and crooked tombs. Perfect for a slow meditative walk before the hussle and bustle of nearby King Street.
Nice place to be, good to learn the past of the first white man that built Australia. Also most haunted as well with active ghosts that was taken a picture of the cemetery
This was @ nighttime so I couldn’t read the headstones - But apparently, there’s a role-call of famous names buried here. Nevertheless, it’s still pretty spectacular.
I was doing food delivery last night at 1.30am I was passing through this cemetery and I could hear paranormal noise around. Firstly I didn't know it's cemetery.
This is not an active cemetary. Graves go back to 1860's. They now occupy a small area, the rest is now a public park.
Atmospheric place... It feels like stepping into a parallel world, stone throw away from the hustle of King Street.
Lots of nice alt kids there with good music taste, very pleasant environment and graffitti 10/10 would recomend
Disused cemetery beautiful to walk through well maintained and a feeling of peace
a place of historicial significance with the chuuurch and very old graves
What a hidden gem.. Behind the walls.... Amazing history is awaiting..
