In a city overrun with hipster bike shops, where you’re mostly paying for the overhead of a fancy space and the optics of young smug cycling elitists, here is a place that is classic NYC: no-nonsense yet warmhearted, with excellent customer service and fair prices. Someone hit my not-too-fancy-yet-beloved vintage road bike while it was locked and bent the fork backwards at a perfectly straight angle. The first THREE shops I took it to were only willing to replace the fork entirely for a substantial sum, whereas Frank, who has clearly seen it all, took one quick look and offered to bend back the fork for a significantly lower price, and quickly got the job done. He could have made more by replacing the fork entirely, but when I asked if there was any real benefit to replacement he said no. Such integrity speaks volumes and left me with great respect for this man and his business.
I love Frank's because it's a totally old-school bike shop - honest work and fair pricing. I'd bring in my electric bikes to have the brake pads replaced or adjusted- even though they don't really get involved with these types of bikes they were super helpful and did a great job. Frank also referred me to a great source to have other repairs done on the bikes. Without a doubt, Frank is a real character - he can sometimes come off as gruff or grumpy but he knows his stuff and, once you get to know him, realize he really cares and is a great guy. He's a real fixture in the neighbourhood too - I loved watching people randomly stop in just to say hi to him. That tells you a lot about a person and their business. Definitely recommend.
If you want true quality service, friendly staff and affordable bikes and equipment go to Frank's Bike shop. My husband is a biker aficionado and has been going to Frank's for over 20 years. All his bikes (Spezialized) come from Frank's. I began coming to the shop 8 years ago and I am very satisfied with the work/annual tuned up that I always receive. A week ago we bought our first baby bike chair and Edgar (Frank's helper) installed it and make sure the bike was in great condition and secure to put our two year old boy in it. They always go one extra mile with their work.
This is the best bike shop I have found in NYC. Run by old-timer Frank since the 70's and with the knowledge to boot. It seems like most bike shops are not real "mechanics" when it comes to fixing a bike. Rather they swap out an entire part at a much higher cost. Not Frank. He takes one quick look and can tell you exactly how long it's going to take to fix and how much it's going to cost. Don't be discouraged by his demeanor which I think some of the reviewers have. He's just an old-timer NYC no-nonsense type, but reasonable once you start talking to him.
I got old Schwinn bicycle frame and ask Frank to customized with new parts and he did the best!.. He know what bicycle should be.. He & his staffs made it perfectly what I want to. Frank knows everything about old bicycle and experienced what / how it should be. I know him since I moved NY 2002. He is like just old good neighbor... I always enjoy chat with him when I visit his store. Thank you...
Went in to get my bike tuned-up. Dropped it off, about 2 &1/2 hrs later it was done and the Young man that worked on it did a great job. When I went to pick up the bike I wound up talking to Frank. The Franks of the City are the people whose businesses we need to make sure we support! He is a History lesson about the Lower East side and he really has a love for bikes.
The definition of a local NYC Indipendent bike shop. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Crazy cramped bike selection as space is such a premium in Manhattan. They were the only shop in the tri-state that had a super hard to find bmx bike my kid was looking for.
Brought 2 bikes great price and as always quick in and out. Will never buy a bike anywhere else but Frank's bike shop.
So helpful didn’t buy a bike but will probably go back. Super friendly funny and helpful. And the bikes seemed good!
