I used to really like this bar. But after last night, I won't be going back. Long story short, I dropped about $200 at the bar on nice whiskeys and cocktails. But when I was leaving, one of the staff accosted me outside and accused me of stealing the bag I had left with. Which was mine - with my laptop my phone, my sunglasses, my charger, etc. He demanded I hand the bag back. I tried to explain it was mine and he threatened to call the police. He would not listen to reason. I outright refused to hand my bag back - with my $2000 laptop in it, why would I? - so he called the police. When the police came and he realised he was wrong, he refused to apologise to me. Who does that to someone who was just out having a good time? And without a shred of proof? I've never experienced anything like it. No one likes being wrong, but when you accuse someone of stealing their own stuff and call the police on them, at least offer a bloody apology for embarrassing and insulting that person. Disgusting on their part.

Upon entering the establishment, I encountered a rather stout bartender who seemed to have some reservations about me. He accused me of attempting to smuggle liquor into the bar simply because I was holding a bottle cap from a drink I had enjoyed at a different venue. I tried to clarify that I kept the cap because I admired cap, but he abruptly snatched it from my grasp and retreated behind the bar with it and had a laugh to his coworker about it. To my surprise, he later declined to serve us drinks and promptly ejected us from the premises based on this incident. I remain genuinely perplexed as to why he treated us in such a manner. It appeared that he was in a sour mood and unfortunately chose to take it out on us. Wouldn't recommend a visit too this bar.

The bar had good music and a cool grungy aesthetic. The experience, however, left a bad taste in my mouth. After arriving we were met by a staff member who handed us the drinks menu, as I am a beer drinker, I asked for a beer instead and didn’t look much at the drinks on the menu. He immediately retaliated and said that he had designed the whole thing and was having a tantrum. I had apologised and said the menu was genuinely very well done and that he’s talented. He thew drinks menu across the bar and then headed out the back. We got two beers and then didn’t receive any service after that. We left soon after and don’t think I’ll be coming back.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that this is the best experience I’ve ever had in a bar. I’m from Sydney and I thought that that I’d seen it all, I’ve been to nice restaurants, bars and pubs, but the experience of being served by Alan was the best I’ve ever had. He is hilarious, one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. You can’t say you’ve been to Melbourne without saying you’ve been to Hats and Tatts.

Hats and tatts is awesome if you're looking for a super chill place with excellent food and a very friendly staff. We arrived when the bar opened and it was pretty empty. The staff treated us like they'd known us forever. Had a double cheese burger which was one of the best burgers I've had in ages. Three other people who we were with had burgers and all commented on how awesome they were too. A great vibe all night on both the rooftop and the first floor. Will be going back regularly and would highly recommend.

This is one of our favourite bars in Melbourne! Great welcoming atmosphere where anyone can feel right at home. Love the music, lots of 90' and 2000's classics (think nu metal, punk, rock). Good selection of drinks. The food is very delicious, burgers and tater tots are excellent. There's a pool table if you're into that and a great rooftop. The owners/staff are legends. Go here.

My favourite place in the city. Welcoming, friendly, awesome staff who will help you find a drink you like from their massive selection. The cocktail menu changes quite regularly. If you're into rum, head upstairs to the rum bar. The music is superb. A huge range of mostly metal/ grunge but with a nice mix of Motown, prog, pop and indie thrown in. They also do great food: the cheesburger with a bacon weave is top notch.

Cracker of a spot. Friendly staff. Rooftop bar. Decent pool table. Good beers on tap. Friendly people. Hats off..to them for creating a great vibe. Tatter tots are tasty as hell. Burger was a tasty but a bit on the small side, so pair it with tattet tots. Loving the vibe with the retro games theme menu too.

Tater Tots

Talk about understated venue, Hats is one of Melbourne's absolutely best hidden gems. Amazing atmosphere, incredible whisky collection, beers and whilst it might not look it, awesome cocktails. The bonus is the food, insanely good tater tots, burgers, brisket and fried chicken to blow your mind. Just to go next level crazy, Hats is now doing unbelievably good Japanese food on Wednesday nights.

Love the vibe of this place, with its American sports paraphernalia, 90's basketball on the TV and an NBA Jam arcade machine. It's also quietly one of the better places in Melbourne for food (the slow cooked brisket burger and kimchi tater tots are my favourite) and cocktails. Highly recommend venturing to South Melbourne and visiting these guys. You won't be disappointed.

Best burgers in Melbourne hands down. The beef burger is a freshly ground smash burger that's perfectly charred and comes with a build-your-own fillings platter on the side. The chicken burger is crispy and juicy with just enough spice. You won't go wrong with either. Extra shout out to the incredible staff, the tots, and the Tommy's Marg in no particular order.

Awesome vibe, definitely "unpolite.", which is one of the things I liked most. Great food, though the bacon in the burger was a little burned... Great selection of craft beers, both on tap and bottled, as well as liquors. Definitely your place if you like good drinks , "dirty" food and awesome bartenders who know what they're taking about.

This place is a different experience to your average bar. Would recommend and so would everyone else here… and around the world it seems. I think the photo covers it. Just don’t actually ask for Jack, cause spirits list is more interesting than anything you’ve seen and they’ll probably tell you you’re in the wrong bar

Fantastic vibe. I loved the menu, everything was curated from the groun d up to be a fully embodied expeience. I really felt like I had two sleeves of Tatts and a beard. I've never felt more masculine in my life. I've been looking for an experience this since my father died.

Outstanding service - just ask for a recommendation... trust me they will find you something cool you have never tried. 1st floor is a whiskey bar and there is a rooftop rum bar - both with interesting choices. You will not go thirsty here. Also they have cheese waffles as their bar snack for only $9.

Its an american themed dive bar. With Espresso Martinis on tap - effectively Jack Daniels on tap - awesome whisky selection, interesting beer options, plus a fair few aussie liquor options available too. American Football, Basketball on replay, plus theres pinball & a pool table. Get involved.

If you tip the chef, he puts special sauce on your burger. Seriously though. The food is ace. The great back bar and spirit selection makes up for the lack of Carlton dry on tap. Seriously the best pub in Melbourne. Most fun you can have without been in rural Mexico with a donkey.

"Hats & Tatts" is an Amazing place, I had tried "mac n cheese waffle" which was so yummy. I also enjoyed the variety of drinks. The bartender was very friendly. the best place to enjoy the best times with your friends. The decor of the bar is remarkable ... Highly Recommended!!!

Decore and feel of the place was old school front bar. 90's theme down pat and reasonable drink prices. Had the onion rings as it was basically a deep fried mess and the hot wings were over cooked. I'd give the place a second chance though as the place itself was awesome.

I did not enjoy the service from the bar staff, they seemed more interested in doing tequila shots with the girl in the bar rather than serving me my beer. Then when beer was ordered got told it wasn’t the right name but still poured it anyway. Cheers guys

Hit the spot. Drained and bored after a day of conference, this place was like mana from heaven. I thoroughly enjoyed a gin infused IIPA, finished the day with a fried chicken burger and tater tots. Exactly what I was after... The guys are doing it right.

A nice joint to hang out, with a huge range of spirits, especially whiskey and rum. The staff are all great except one of the guys who was working on Friday in the main bar who was a huge douche.

Do you like loud music and a great and enthusiastic crowd? Yes? Well then this place i for you. Everyone there is there to have a great time and have a laugh. The staff are extreamly welcoming and enthusiastic. What a banger of a bar it truly is!

One (tall one) of the bartenders were keep shouting customers and telling bad things to customers. It was a surprise for me to see something like this. It was not comfortable to stay there.

Excellent place. Awesome crew, wonderful wood and a great whisky selection. If you're looking for somewhere for a few drinks and some food this place should definitely be on your radar. Cool vibe inside and rooftop area for a different feel.

My Favourite bar ever. Amazing selection and the staff are the best mix of friendly and knowledgeable. One of the few places you can just chill and have a boilermaker, but you can also order elite cocktails from talented staff.

A staff member said the chicken burger would be the best chicken burger we had ever had... AND IT WAS! The food was amazing!! And the staff were so incredibly friendly. Could not be happier that we stumbled upon this gem.

A hidden spot, I wish the street entrance had a better sign..the staff are amazing...kind and knowledgeable. Food was amazing, small range but a huge range of drinks. Come for nice quiet drinks on the roof top!

Really cool grunge vibe and a pint was about $11 so it's cheaper than a lot of other places around. Really cool upper area and they have a pool table!

Absolute coolest venue south of the river. Legendary staff with second to none booze knowledge, amazing back bar, tasty American style food and rad frat house vibes.

The tunes were on point and the staff were epic as, bro! Delicious beverages and exceptional food (trust me, you want to go all in!). Thanks guys, we'll be back!

Fantastic little bar masquerading as an old pub. More whiskey than you can poke a stick at, a refined selection of craft beers on tap.

A warm and cozy joint with cheap drinks and an entrance that looked close. Food was fine - tasty but everything was rather oily.

I'm usually anxious going somewhere new, but I felt comfortable 5 minutes in. The bar staff are great, but Tim was exceptional!
