Came for the coffee; stayed for the sandwiches; will DEFINITELY return for the soup! My wife wanted a hot cup of coffee on a cold, soggy October morning. I wasn't in the mood for coffee, but I was hungry for something warm and comforting; thus, I began poking around online for a café reasonably closed to home that looked intriguing, and could satisfy both of our cravings. Hungry Heart checked all the boxes. The interior is a little sparse, in terms of seating and indoor dining (fallout from the height of COVID, perhaps?), but we grabbed an empty table near the (artificial) fireplace, placed our order: a tuna salad sandwich, a classic Everything bialy, a golden milk, double shot espresso, two oat milk lattés, one using horchata, and a bowl of the tomato soup. Drinks arrived first, in a handful of minutes, with the food hot on its heels. I have nothing but rave things to say about everything: the tuna salad sandwich was fantastic (bonus points for using capers, dill, and pickles instead of celery!), the Classic bialy hearty and satisfying, and the soup - otherworldly! Among the best I've had, anywhere, all by itself; but the addition of creme fraiche and basil oil elevating it even higher. Too often, the inclusion of basil can be a bit overwhelming, as it is quite often overused, but infusing it in oil? Stroke of genius. As a former barista, I can be critical of boutique café beverages, but the staff here know what they're doing. Thick, rich foam, correct temperature, quality grounds - you're in good hands here. The staff were also friendly and helpful, offering suggestions, clarifications, and general conversation. Although we didn't utilize it (this time), online ordering is also available, and seems pretty easy to navigate. You can even order ahead for pickup the next day, after they've closed, and choose your preferred pick up time. Pretty great for a local operation! All in all, Hungry Heart PDX has left me, well...hungry (and thirsty) for more. We will absolutely be back!

This review is not about the food, I wasn't able to order. The women working here seem friendly except for One woman who kept yelling and demanding things of the other employees while they clearly were already doing something and then yelled at a customer who didn't respond quickly enough for her and then didn't even give him his whole order, the customer had to ask for it and got snapped at for doing so. When my daughter and I got to the front of the line we asked for a menu since there was none posted anywhere in the restaurant and the girl taking orders said they are serving breakfast, like that told us what was on the menu, so my daughter looked online and ordered biscuits and gravy and was told they weren't serving brunch just breakfast. So we stepped out of line and left. It smelled good in there except for the stink of bad attitude that the one employee or possibly the owner was thrown around and the fact that a menu is a four-letter word to them. Definitely left with a Hungry Heart sense I couldn't eat there. Have to say kudos to everybody who solved the mystery of what you can order. Found it interesting that when my daughter and I got home and went on to the website we were able to place an order for pickup that included biscuits and gravy, since we'd already been told that wasn't an option we didn't waste our time.

Start off by saying their pastries are *chefs kiss* delicious. Absolutely love them. BUT I continuously try this place in hopes that their coffee tasting burnt or just like hot milk is a one off. I’m starting to realize that they just don’t know how to make coffee :/ today was frustrating especially. I ordered the usual food items and today asked for a mocha and drip coffee. Drip coffee should not take 20 mins to pour. But today (and almost every single time) the person taking my order thanked me and continued to chat with their co workers. Forgetting I had ordered something. It was not extremely busy. Maybe one other person waiting and one behind me. I think a course in barista training would be a good start with helping your staff understand coffee and what it means to taste good. Unfortunately I’m done ordering coffee and food from here with their long wait times and oblivious barista.Plenty of other shops in the neighborhood. Sorry ya’ll :(

Beautiful, delicious mini cupcakes in all the regular flavors for a friend's birthday. Her hands-down favorite was the horchata cupcake — I loved the chocolate with dulce de leche frosting. Raves from all the guests. I think Hungry Heart is such a sweet, pleasant bakery, with very kind staff. As it happens, I arrived a couple hours earlier than cupcakes are usually available (10:30 a.m.) While I was deciding what to do, the woman helping me zipped back to the kitchen and found that there were just enough cupcakes for me to take to the party. Definitely want to come back for more cupcakes, and I'd like to try the breakfast sandwiches. They looked yummy.

This is my favorite pastry place in PDX. They have savory meat and vegetarian pastries, adorable unique cupcakes, housemade custom bialy sandwiches and delicious lattes. Here are the best things on menu: Any asparagus cheese danish-yummy and flaky! The jalapeño cheddar bialy with tomato jam! Cardamom rose latte, or if they have nitro on tap, get that with a flavored cold foam of your choice. Almond cream croissant….if you’ve ever tried one before, this one is better. I have been eating at Hungry Heart for about 8 years now and I won’t ever stop. I just wish they opened earlier.

Great sandwiches, pastries, and tea drinks (I can’t drink coffee). The only reason why I can’t give more than 3 stars is that the service is always terrible. It always feels like it is such an inconvenience to the staff to take my order. Went in this morning and my heart broke for the woman in front of my who was with two small children as the employees had no patience for her or that she was trying to keep the kids in line while ordering. It seems that maybe it would behoove workers to remember that service for the customers is important too.

I visited this place twice and each time asked for my Vanilla Latte to be extra hot. both times it was not hot, I am pretty sure I was capable to guzzling it down, but did not. just waited till I got to the office and heated it in the microwave (on both occasions); other than that it was good coffee. Also ordered sandwiches each time (morning sandwiches). They were mediocre at best (not bad, but definitely nothing special). I probably will not go back, if so it will only be for the coffee drink, and I will stress the "extra hot".

  • River Stoll

This place is super cute and the food good, but because of the layout of the restaurant it's incredibly loud. If someone is talking behind you in line you can't hear a word from the staff member taking your order. The noise plus a long wait for a bilay to get toasted makes it hard for me to give a higher review. This place is probably great for extroverts and people who like yelling, but it doesn't work for someone like me. If you're looking for coffee and want a quieter experience, I'd suggest looking across the street.

  • LoriP

This is a favorite for most of us montavillans, when bi-partisan is just too much or you just want a cupcake then this is yer place. They do have bagels and other light food but if you're really hungry go around the corner to ya halla. They usually have rotating art on the walls and the front wall is mostly windows so it's nice and bright even on a rainy day. It's just a nice neighborhood place with kids and dogs (outside) and hipsters too. Everyone who works here is friendly too. Oh just go there already

  • Cindy Saucedo

I absolutely adore this bakery. It is located in the great Montavilla neighborhood. There are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. It is easily accesible by bike or foot. They make craft lattes, coffee, and teas. Their bread it freshly baked and costumers can see staff in the back with their open kitchen style. Hungry Heart Bakery also offers a full breakfast menu. Enjoy people watching from inside or outside with the great glass bay door. I will continue to be a regular at Hungry Heart Bakery.

  • Matthew Price

An absolutely lovely little bakery. They have a great mix of savory and sweet pastries as well as other baked confections like cupcakes! The setting is lively and energetic; as you order you can look into the kitchen and see everyone hard at work whipping up more treats. Located so close to all of the wonderful other places in Montavilla neighborhood and the gorgeous Mt. Tabor park this is in such a great place. In short: a great place with great food that I always love coming to!

  • Francesca Yvonne

They recently relocated to this large, open space from a small spot around the corner. It suits them well!Lots of indoor and covered outdoor seating. The food here is so delicious and the coffee divine. Try the tomato soup and grilled cheese on a rainy Portland day and you will be hard-pressed to find a more satisfying lunch. Very welcoming and down to earth staff. Great neighbors and a lovely part of what makes downtown Montavilla extra-awesome.

  • Sage

My new favorite breakfast spot in Portland. I'm a fan of cardamom anything and this place takes the cake (pun intended) for best cardamom pastry, best cardamom carrot cake, and best cardamom latte I've had in Portland. Their savory food is also delicious. I really enjoy their breakfast burrito, the handmade hash brown, and their salsa verde is delicious. Super cute spot and always really delicious food and drink. 6 out of 5 stars.

Stopped in to grab a quick bite on my way to the airport. I had about half an hour to spare, figured that would be plenty. I was so wrong! It took them the 25 minutes to make a salad and breakfast sandwich. They forgot to include utensils and napkins and took forever to bag up my food and give it to me. While I was waiting, I also saw them mess up 3 orders. Don’t think I’d go back, to be honest.

  • Angie “Falangie H” Harris

Tasty treats! A handful of vegan options which is AMAZING! The only downside is that it is a little small, and there's not a ton of table space. We went there as a party of four with a child, and although they do have high chairs (which is really really nice) there wasn't anywhere for us to sit and have a nice breakfast sandwich and pastry. We did get some stuff to go and it was delicious!

  • Joel Cuozzo-Gonzalez

Just came here with my girlfriend for a Valentine's Day bite to eat and we were so happy with our choice to try Hungry Heart out! Ate the mock tuna sandwich and she had one of their seasonal veggie sammies. We nabbed a cinnamon pecan coffee cake muffin as well, super tasty and priced right for the working man/woman lol! Check this place out if you're in the neighborhood.

  • J Weiss

I live in the neighborhood and a coffee and pastry at Hungry Heart on a Saturday morning is easily the highlight of my week. Wonderful staff (hi Gwen!), great coffee, great pastries. I highly recommend the carrot loaf, the cinnamon rolls, and whatever savory pastry or danish is on rotation. Service is usually speedy, but if there's a line definitely wait! It's worth it.

  • Christi Crow

Love the pumpkin danish here, it's amazing! Also I like that they make all.of their syrups and stuff in house. Makes a latte first thing in the morning even better! Staff has always been very friendly and nice when we have been in. And also kept very tidey. Love that every month they feature a local artist on their wall so there is always something new to look at!

  • Josh McHale

Cold coffee and rude service. Went in for a quick little 8oz coffee to warm up this afternoon. The server said it would be a few minutes to brew a fresh batch. Instead it came out immediately. It was tepid and filled with dregs at the bottom. I can only imagine this happened because I failed to leave a tip. Tip your servers people. Even if it's only .30¢

  • Abbie Lu

This was a great space with super friendly staff. The coffee was amazing and clearly the barista had skill. They had many gluten free and vegan pastries on display and the food menu looks nice. I plan to come back and try their food. The coffee alone was so good though best sugar free almond milk latte I've had in a few weeks of trying new places.

  • C W

I've got love for their cardamom rolls! Counter staff is very friendly and patient. But the croissants.... oh God, they weren't displayed so I purchased one sight unseen. You can't distinguish these from a donut shop or Fred Meyer bakery. Please, take 'em off the menu or call them crescent rolls; these are bready and awful. (4 stars otherwise!)

  • Brenna McElhinny

Cute local spot with good selection of pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Biggest problem they have is quality of service. Orders often are missing items or you have to ask for rest of your order as they forgot. Also they don’t have packaging so everything is tossed in a bag and it destroys most of the pastries so DO NOT do takeout from here

  • Jeff Randall

Great coffee, sandwiches and pastries. I get something different almost every time I go and it's always great. Their new space looks great and is much larger than the old one, which was really the only downside Hungry Heart had. Now I'm just crossing my fingers they extend their hours and become the main Montavilla coffee spot.

  • L. Bloom

I admit it – I’m so spoiled to amazing food in these parts that I’ve become pretty blasé about most pastry, hard to tempt or impress. Friends were raving about the vanilla cardamom morning bun at Hungry Heart, though, so I tried it. I wasn’t expecting it to be, well… perfection. But that’s what it is. Perfection.

  • Matt Zenick

Nice modern coffee shop. They missed our order and weren’t very apologetic. They also didn’t include a baked good we ordered and we had to ask. When we reminded them of the baked good they didn’t heat it up like we ordered. Baked good was tasty, food and coffee were below average. Service could use improvement.

  • Belta Mengistu

I love their pastry and sandewtches. But the coffee not that different from Starbucks also as expensive. I am a coffee drinker I know good coffee. Their late tastes like warm milk with regular coffee not expreso. I add extra shot still not that different. I leave close but I don't as much because of the coffee.

  • Timothy Vander Ploeg

This was a cute little place with tasty, but small sandwiches for the price. It does have a nice, relaxing and cheery atmosphere and good coffee. I had the vegetarian sandwich and was happy with the flavor, but really disappointed with the small amount of food in the sandwich. Worth checking out though!

  • danigloo2829

If you're staying in the Southeast Division this your local coffee shop go-to. They have good hot cocoa, a good selection if macaroons, they also have vegan choices, and delicious muffins and cupcake to pair with your coffee. A lot of locals hang around this cafe so go here and grab your coffee here.

  • Gayle Keller

The worst BLT I have ever had. Bacon was chewy, rubbery and flacid. No flavors in sandwich and mealy tomatoes. Have to wait in line and I was hungry when i got home. So something to work on. Make better food. Excellent bake goods! I have been many many times and the bake good are ways percection.

  • Ashly Luper

Love this local spot! My partner and I go once a week for a little breakfast treat & oat milk matcha lattes. The breakfast sandwiches are delish - they have great gf bread too! I think they are still figuring out how to time the kitchen & drink orders. Ordering online helps with the wait time.

  • Marjorie Bowling

Hungry Heart satiates the need for both savory and sweet, in healthy sized portions too! A gem tucked in Montavilla. Editing this review: if I could give a ten star review, I absolutely would for Hungry Heart! Everyone on the staff is considerate to dietary needs or preferences. Love it here

  • Kevin Stambaugh

Had such a good sausage breakfast sandwich here. Came out rather quick considering how busy they were. The latte was pretty standard, but don’t think that’s where the shine. That all in the food. Can’t wait to return and get another sammie. Think they also had vegan options which is cool.

  • Tarin Gniazdowski

I’m honestly addicted to this place! I have to stop in at least once a week for a pastry or breakfast burrito. Service is always wonderful and every single thing I’ve ever consumed from hungry heart has been absolutely delicious. I feel so blessed to have them in the neighborhood!!

  • John Evans

Cupcakes spongy frosting oddly dense. Served very cold? Service not good. With 4.7 stars the other fare must be better. If you're going for a good cupcake. This place isnt it. I'd give it 2 stars but I can count on 2 fingers in the last decade I havent tipped. Sadly 1 star it is.

  • Tiffany Jetson

❤❤❤ Ooh all the things that make this spot so very lovely! The breakfast sandwiches, the crispy delicious hash browns the carrot cardamom bread even the coffee is spot on! The entire team are all kind and helpful and the ownership is top notch doing it right! P E R F E C T …

  • Ben Irwin

My wife and I try to come here about weekly for their delicious pastries, excellent coffee, and the kind-hearted people who work there. This is a good place, deserving of success. As neighborhood residents, we recommend them to everyone we can. Gwen is the best barista around!

  • Courtney Bouchet

Highly recommend. This bakery is the best! They have so many good baked good options, but also breakfast food and lunch (pictured here; we already ate most of the pastry before I took the picture!). We also highly recommend their brunch, served Saturday, Sunday, Monday.

  • kryston skinner

This is my favorite coffee shop! What more could you ask for when you get this good of food and drinks? Everything is delicious, staff is phenomenal and the space is adorable. Big shout out to Pia for super cute latte art! Don’t sleep on this place y’all! ₍ᐢ. ̫.ᐢ₎

  • Max Peterson

Great place for java & pastry in one of my favorite SE neighborhoods. The aromas of dark roast, late night baking & powdered sugar are ample vanguards; I've never been let down by the pastry case, the featured art or the recommendations of the staff. See you soon

  • Kristina Davis

Love the new location! So easy to maintain distance between people/groups and the outdoor, covered seating with heaters is appreciated. The coffee is pretty good (enjoy their mochas as they aren’t on the sweet side), and the baked bialy sandwiches are delicious.

  • Kimberly Bandy

WOW. Savory and sweet options abound. An excellent stop on a morning walk or errand. This goodness has caught on with the locals, so longer lines may give way to slightly longer wait to get your food. So unless you're in a serious rush, it's worth any wait.

  • Scott Rim

Had the Sausage Sando with Cheddar Jalapeño bread and it was the best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had. Bread was crispy on the outer layer, soft on the inside. Perfectly cooked. Amazing selection of pastries too. And mushroom mocha latte was yum …

Coffee is excellent (stumptown), French macaroons are French macaroons (fun flavors but this just isn't my favorite kind of cookie), epically delicious vegan and gf options for desserts, and in the Fall they make an in house pumpkin puree

  • Sabira Marike

While I love this bakery, we went last week specifically to get some macarons. They told us that they no longer serve this delicacy. Apparently there's now a second location, called something else. I can't find it on Google maps. Very sad!

  • M T C

Amazing coffee and great atmosphere, may seem quaint but you can easily find a spot to sit alone or with company. Loved the spiced macron for $2! Lots of local events posted by the coffee station was so informative and nice to see.

I haven't had a single bad experience at Hungry Heart or eaten a single thing I didn't like. Their brunch is everything I need on a weekend morning paired with an horchata latte or a cocktail and you really can't go wrong.

  • Rick Barnes

A good friend took me here this morning. I had the most wonderful breakfast sandwich. A croissant with ham egg and swiss. Highly recommended. The music was good, a bit loud for conversation between us old folk, LOL.

  • Ashlee

I can't stop ordering from Hungry Heart. Everything I've tried (both breakfast and lunch options) has been absolutely delicious, especially the bakery! The coffee is great too. Can't recommend this place enough!

  • Lou

Fantastic atmosphere, really heckin good coffee, the biyali absolutely slaps, and the vanilla cardamom pastry was a revelation. Very generous cream cheese, so if you're not into that ask them to go light on it.

  • Scout

Been patronizing them over their changes in location, and I have loved much of their menu, especially brunch. Always a pleasure to drink a horchata oat latte here! Great place, just wish they were open more :)

  • Yuqing Kou

The cupcakes were delicious, and coffee was good too. Really chill atmosphere with friendly staff. I feel like this place gets overshadowed by the Bipartisan Cafe, but it's definitely worth going to!

I work up the street and go here quite regularly. Everything from breakfast to lunch to pastries and beverages has always been excellent. Hungry Heart is fabulous and the staff is very friendly.
