Took one of my cars into this place. My first time setting foot in Ootmar Auto and it will without a doubt be my last. The guy working the counter was something else and the customer service I received set a new low. The interaction started with me stating that Mr. Lube had recommended I get the spark plugs in the car changed and that I was looking to get a quote. To this, the rep responded with “the guys at Mr. Lube are complete idiots. I need to diagnose it. It’s going to be $150.00 for a diagnosis. I know, with a high degree of certainty that the problem is actually this (points to a car part on his desk)”. Not being mechanically inclined myself, I asked how much it would be to replace the said part should it need replacing which is a reasonable request. (not wanting to spend money on a diagnosis if the replacement part was going to be super expensive). I was basically told to kick rocks and that he wasn’t interested in helping me. You needed to be there. This guy seemed super irritated and I did nothing to warrant this kind of treatment. Literally asked for a quote. If a quote wasn’t possible for whatever reason fine, but the tone, body language, and overall communication was completely uncalled for. Also, openly referring to a competitor as idiots? To some degree, at least try to be professional. For the record, I have always had amazing service from Mr Lube and Ootmar Auto should learn from them. Unfortunately in this case Mr Lube was unable to source the parts I needed fast enough but now I realize it’s certainly worth the wait in order to not deal with Ootmar. I recommend someone talks to the guy and educates him on customer service (or on how to talk to people in general) or, move him to the back of the garage far away from any possible human interaction. I myself own a business and I can’t imagine treating my clients/prospects this way. For all others, just save yourself the time and go elsewhere.

Years ago I found myself new to Vancouver with an old muscle car I had just bought that, while exciting and new to me, was hardly in showroom condition. I had no experience with mechanics in Vancouver, and so turned to the internet. Ootmar seemed to fit the bill. Here it is five years later and I am constantly and continually blown away with the quality, service, value and overall experience I receive at Ootmar. Most recently, after a summer of hard miles, Al did a full engine and transmission overhaul on what was a tired and very original 1968 Buick big block. The results are simply spectacular; I cannot sing high enough praise. The powertrain isn't just new, it's better than new. Completed with the attention to detail that only true professionals and enthusiasts could replicate or appreciate. More than the shiny and new, though, Al and Ootmar Automotive have always been respectful, fair, and honest with me about the state of my car. What it needs, what needs to be watched, and what can be lived with. I highly value this approach. Ootmar keeps you safe, while being mindful of your pocket book. Once or twice I've had other mechanics do work on that same car. Inevitably, and in all instances, the car has ended up back with Al to correct what was done before. An expensive lesson for me, and one that Al was gracious about when he had to fix other peoples' mistakes. I never felt taken advantage of by him, even when other people had taken advantage. Thank you Al, and thank you Ootmar. You have my complete recommendation. I encourage anyone reading this to give the team at Ootmar a try.

I decided to take my car to Ootmar Automotive based on their solid reviews and also because I wanted a second opinion as I didn't feel the dealership had my best interest at heart. I'm a female who knows absolutely nothing about the mechanics on how a car works. I have a 2005 Nissan Xtrail which would shudder on occasion when idling at a light or when the car was in reverse. The dealership didn't know what was wrong with the car but 'suspected' it may be a head gasket issue which was an expensive repair of several thousand dollars. Luckily, new spark plugs was all that was needed to correct the shuddering. Ootmar serviced the car so it is current on its maintenance. There were some minor repairs and a terra clean service performed (recommended) so now the car runs smoothly and I'm happy knowing I'm driving a reliable vehicle. I also liked how they prioritized the repairs so that you didn't feel you have to have the work done all at once. I highly recommend Ootmar Automotive if you're looking for reliable, trustworthy auto mechanics who know what they're doing. UPDATE - had to take the car in as it developed a scraping and metallic rattling noise. It was very unnerving driving and I thought it was related to the recent work done but it was debris that has gotten into the brake pads and had lodged itself. Ootmar took care of the problem promptly even though it was a hectic Monday morning. We did a short test drive and they had the problem fixed within 20 minutes and I was on my way. They also didn't charge me which they could very well have. Thanks Peter and Ben!!

I've taken several vehicles into Ootmar over the past couple years for check-ups. All good experiences. Most recently, I took my 2013 Jeep Wrangler in after the engine light came on. The diagnostics showed an issue that _may_ have been covered under warranty, so they recommended I take it to a certified Jeep dealer who would be able to operate on my vehicle without a charge to me. Ootmar (and Ben, helping me) didn't charge me for any of this. Ultimately, the Jeep dealership in Surrey couldn't confirm that the engine problem was under warranty, but recommended I change my brakes and air filter. My brakes were "at only 4mm". When I asked what the brakes started at, the sales lady said "I don't know, maybe 10mm?". I told the sales clerk at this other dealership that I'd just be taking my Jeep back. Back in Vancouver my engine light had turned off (still a mystery), but I took my Jeep back to Ootmar for some advice. Ben advised me that the rear brakes start at 6mm and were down to 4mm now. He didn't recommend to have them fixed at this point, and I left my appointment with no work done and nothing paid. The advice I get from Ben (and other Ootmar employees) is similar to the advice I'd get from a friend or anyone looking out for my best interests. Finding a mechanic you can trust is ultimately important, and I'm happy to have found such a place

I feel so fortunate to have made such an excellent “mechanic connection” at Ootmar Automotive. I was without a vehicle for 15 years and when I decided to get back on the road I worried that I’d never find a trust worthy service station. A friend told me about Ootmar Automotive so I checked them out. I dropped in to introduce myself and explain my needs and was met with such friendly, honest and down to earth people that I was pretty sure right away that I’d found my car clinic. Well, I’ve never looked back. Without fail, I have received quick, competent, value priced service. I’m never surprised by extra charges and they always explain exactly what they’ve done and why. They even let me know about things that are going to need doing in the future so I can plan a bit. I truly feel that the whole team takes my safety very seriously and the work they’ve done in keeping my car ( 1993 Mazda 323) in great running condition for 5 years now has always been top notch. The staff and the owner are all so friendly and personable; they make me feel like a valued client. The owner even offered to give me a lift home once! I have recommended Ootmar Automotive to several family members who have also been very satisfied with the work. Once you’ve had the best, you never want the rest! I had a bit of a situation happen to me when I was leaving body Energy Club with my smoothie the other day.. my car wouldn’t start ! I suspected it may have had something to do with my battery but I was panicking.. I quickly looked around and I noticed that just down the street was Ootmar Automotive. I thought maybe it’s worth a shot to call them and see if there’s anything they can do. I called them and Pat answered, he immediately jumped to my rescue and said he would send someone out with jumper cables to take a look at my car ! Not even a minute went by before Marcus, an apprentice at Ootmar, came out and saved the day. He was professional, kind and caring and helped me get my car running as well as gave me instructions and advice on what to do. I was expecting a charge for this, (rightfully so) but there wasn’t ! He just waved and said have a nice day! Overall, if I could give 10/5 stars for this place I would. They are extremely professional and kind. I’m not sure what I would have done if it was not for this place. I will be bringing my car to them for all future repairs and highly recommend them to anyone who needs an auto body shop. It has been a great pleasure to work with Al and the team at Ootmar Automotive over the years. I've had my vehicles serviced at Ootmar and you won't meet more honest mechanics. It's incredibly rare to find a team that recommends what's needed immediately and things that can wait (for example Al mentioned my spark plugs were overdue by mileage on my X5 but encouraged me to contact the prior owner to see if they'd been replaced when he could've just said I needed new ones). My girlfriend recently had a pre-purchase inspection (at a better price than BCAA) and they ran a full diagnostics on the car finding up to $10k of potential problems. Al took the time to explain each of the issues to both of us in great detail and followed with honest advice regarding the purchase (to run). As a busy professional it's nice to have mechanics who you can trust to get the job done timely and efficiently. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a team with high standards of integrity and also a great place for detailed pre-purchase inspections.

Between Lawrence and Al in the front and the quality work behind the job, these guys are amazing! I had a lengthy issue last august that was unexpected. They kept me up to date along the way and took the time to explain the process. The end result was a fixed AC unit. I also had a part that I had broken off my Jeep (plastic on the shifter) and they thought is was garbage when they were cleaning my car for me to pick up. I wanted the piece and thought it was long gone. Fast forward 1 year. I bring a truck into the shop for my friend, and Lawrence hands me the piece he had gone through the trash to get. He still had it from a year earlier. Needless to say, I don't think any other shop would have gone through that amount of trouble or effort for a broken piece of a part. I would hands down recommend Ootmar for any job, and I have already had 2 calls from my friends thanking me for sending them to Al at Ootmar. Keep up the good work!!! Bryce

These guys are great. After another shop wouldn't give a straight answer about whether or not they'd fix something on my Kia, and wouldn't give me any price estimate, I went to Ootmar Automotive to get another opinion. They were upfront with what they could do based on the info they had and fixed some rodent damage on the first visit that the first shop didn't even notice. They gave the best estimates they could and tried to explain everything along the way. Very transparent. The guys at Ootmar answered all my questions with a lot of patience and passion for their work - they communicated really well and eventually helped to solve a problem with a dying crankshaft sensor. They provided a courtesy car as well, which was very nice. I'll definitely recommend them and go back the next time I need any work on my car!

Everyone should have a doctor, lawyer, and mechanic they can trust. I'm lucky: I've got all three. And the mechanic category is Ootmar where Ben Main is the real deal for professionalism, friendliness, and fair pricing. We moved to Vancouver three years ago after driving cross country from Michigan. Our Subaru needed maintenance and we rolled the dice with Ootmar; we hit the jackpot. Since our arrival in town Ben has maintained our car beautifully, identified a couple of minor issues, and directed us to the Subaru dealer when a major issue (under warranty) came up. He and his staff are responsive, thorough, and extremely competent. As an automotive writer, I am somewhat dangerous in my knowledge of cars, and I respect Ben's knowledge and evaluations. Five stars to Ootmar.

Had my engine light come on and called around a few places to see what they'd charge just to read the code for me. Marcus at Ootmar told me they wouldn't charge for it (despite several other places charging $50 or more), and when I came down, Justin helped me by reading the code and explaining what it meant. Hopefully it's just a slightly leaky gas cap, but the guys were kind enough to put a little sealant around it and send me on my way with a card to call back if the light came back on. They walked me through the next steps of what they'd do if that happened and how much I'd expect to spend on an initial diagnostic. Everyone was really pleasant and happy to explain what everything meant - especially considering it's a hot Friday afternoon!

One of the toughest things about moving to a new city is finding a good place to fix your car. Lawrence, Al and the guys at Ootmar's have made that search an easy one. I moved to Vancouver in July and have brought my Audi A4 in three or four times for various types of work. They are honest and trustworthy, doing the necessary work only and also suggesting other things that may make the car work better. They also noticed once my speaker wasn't working properly and they fixed it without charging me. This is the type of great service that keeps me coming back. They also recently helped us sell our car. These are the best guys we have ever dealt with when it comes to our car.

I dropped by to get my old Mazda 323, fix, talk to Al at the entrance, I mention that I usually fix most I can and that I thought the injector on the Mazda was probably to be replace, after a couple of test I did, Al recommended me to pull the spark plugs of and replace them if they look damaged that to is opinion would not be the injector,they rarely fail, He said, that way I would save some money and most likely be the problem. And it was as he said, one spark plug was carbonized badly got new ones on and it purr like a kitty again!! Thanks for your honesty and time you took to help me. We have a second car that need some work, now I know where to take it. THANKS AGAIN!

I had the pleasure to deal with Ben due to the many problems my Lincoln MKC had. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to solve them all, but I must say that Ben was amazing. He did everything he could and he’s highly professional. He’s been with me every step of the way taking the time to review everything thoroughly and multiple times. He gave me the vibe of the friendly neighbourhood mechanic I use to deal with in my city in Italy. He went even an extra mile to help my wife when our car stopped suddenly giving us a last minute courtesy car. I can’t say anything good about my car, but I have plenty of good words for Ben and I’d recommend him to everybody. Thank you Ben!

I have to admit finding a good car repair shop in Vancouver is extremely hard due to the sheer amount of shops out there. It hard to to find out if there good or not. I went here just simply base on the google reviews for a brakes change due to my car dealer telling me they had to replaced. The mechanics there look at my brakes for no charge and told me they were perfectly fine. They did recommend to me replacing my tires due to wear and were very helpful to me in deciding what tires to choose and charge me only for tires itself with balance. No BS fees like canadian tire does to you. I would definitely recommend this place for others

I emailed Ootmar after reading the reviews to arrange an oil change and possibly some other work. I was pleased to receive a prompt call from Peter who gave me straightforward and honest advice so I booked the work. Unfortunately, my car needed a lot more work than I had anticipated. Fortunately, it was at Ootmar. Al, the owner, was also very straightforward and pleasant to deal with and although I got a big bill, the price was very fair for the amount of work done. No high pressure selling, no rip offs, no BS. Just great work, sensible advice, a competitive price and very honest - business as it should be. Highly recommended.

A family friend recommended Ootmar to me a couple of years ago, and I've been taking my car (a Volvo wagon) to Ben Main and his guys since. These guys are not only expert mechanics, they're also honest people who truly are interested in doing what's best for their customers. Ben will tell you what you need, when you need it, and most important, what you don't need. The guys at Ootmar Auto are sincerely honest guys providing a great service to customers, at affordable prices. It's really as simple as that. Excellent local mechanic shop. The owner and staff are all kind, professional and honest people - it’s easy to book an appointment and service appointments are smooth and quick. I also appreciate that no one pushes to upsell me on anything - they’ll give me some options but regardless of whether or not I decide to go forward with something, I don’t get treated any differently. I’d also been looking for somewhere to swap and store my tires for a reasonable price and out of the many I asked, Ootmar had the best prices and convenience for me. Highly recommend visiting this shop if you’re looking for a good mechanic!

Great experience! I made an 7am appointment for the day that it happened to snow a lot. I was afraid they might not be open due to the snow, but by the time I got there at 7:05 the sidewalk was already fully shoveled and a worker was there with a smile to greet me. They found the issue with my honda CRV within a few hours, then called me to authorize the repair. The price was lower than my mechanic friend said he would have charged for such a repair! They even walked through the snow to get my part from the distributor since it couldn't get delivered in the snow! Honest, hardworking mechanics here!

I brought my pickup truck in because the dashboard engine light was lighting up which can signal emission system problems that need to be corrected. The staff used their plug in diagnostic tool to assess the problem, and the owner used his experience to try one adjustment that the tool doesn't suggest. He simply adjusted the gas cap on my gas tank, and suddenly the dash light stopped lighting up. Problem solved. I was in and out in 15 minutes and they didn't charge me anything for this service even though I offered to pay. That's above and beyond great service. That's decency and kindness.

Very professional and very good people. My partner dropped off the car and we need an oil change, air filters replaced and brakes looked at. They called me within a few hours to let me know what needs to be done. I authorised everything, told them not to rush (used to work at a shop myself) and they said be done in a day or two. The guys they have are FAST. Called me the next day within 4 hours of opening to let me know it was done! Prices were a touch high, but since we drive a subaru wrx and they were OEM parts, can't really complain at all. Would do service with them again!

Extremely honest and genuine people and very reasonable prices. I was told by Toyota dealership that my car’s water pump was leaking and needed to be fixed immediately. We brought it in to Ootmar’s for a second opinion and quote where he gave us a break down of parts and labor costs and reassured us that water pump leaks are very slow and not to be too stressed. He took a look at our car and turns out there wasn’t even a leak!!! He also gave us a breakdown explaining exactly how the water pump works which was very helpful. Great service. Great experience. Highly recommend.

We discussed a price to do my front brakes, simple pads and rotors for 450$. When I got to the shop when the work was done he slapped a bill for $650 in front of me. If I wouldn’t have made up a fuss it wouldn’t have been adjusted back to 450$ (this reason is enough to never go back) Also I always do a A dirty trick when going to a new mechanic. I fill up my oil up over the required amount by about a litre then ask if he could check my levels on my fluids. There was no mention of the excess oil in my oil pan. This immediately makes me question their due diligence.

Great service! I got my winter tires taken off and stored and my summer tires put on. It was very reasonably priced. As a young woman I often feel talked down to or taken advantage of when I need my car serviced but not at Ootmar. After getting my tires swapped Al outlined a few things I might consider maintaining on my car, a timeline of when it might be needed and why it would be a good idea to do it. He was not pushy at all. Absolutely wonderful service and they finished up sooner than they had original said and I was able to get to work early!

Visited a few days ago to see if they could replace the battery on our Honda Fit and was originally told they could schedule me for later in the week. We agreed I would call back to confirm an appointment date and I left. When I got back to my car, I found that the battery had again died. I went back to Ootmar and Ben was happy to help jump-start my car and even offered to squeeze me into his scheduled to get the battery replaced that same day. Everything was done within a couple of hours and I couldn't be happier with the experience. Thanks, Ben!

We love Ben and Ootmar! We called with a list of repairs that was recommended for us. Ben got us a quote within 30 minutes and was so cheery and pleasant over the phone. We brought the car in and he answered all our questions and we really appreciated how kind he was about it. We’re not car people and don’t know much. The repairs were done in five days for half the cost the dealership recommended and Ben coaches us through how best to sell our car if we wanted. We will definitely be back for any other car maintenance tasks we need in the future!

I have a pair of BMW front wheel spindles out of the car and I wanted to replace the wheel bearings for preventative maintenance (NOTHING WAS WRONG YET). I came into Ottmar asking for a price with a photo for reference. The mechanic tells me I need a wheel hub, which isn't true, then laughs in my face and tells me he won't do the work... Regardless of whether or not he was interested, to laugh at a potential customers face was rude, and downright upsetting. Definitely don't recommend this place if they treat their customers this way.

As a recent first time car owner, going to Ootmar was my first time visiting a mechanic - and it couldn't have been a better experience! Ben made sure to answer all my (many) questions, and was able to explain things to me in such a way that I understood what was going on. Everything about the process felt super transparent with frequent calls to check in prior to making any decisions about next steps to take with my vehicle. Great service and very professional. Diagnosed the problem correctly and fixed it very quickly. They also found another problem while taking my camper for a test drive. I felt there was something odd with the way my camper was handling on the road but no other mechanics were able to identify the problem. They told me that they didn't have the right equipment to fix the problem and recommended another place. They even called the place to explain what the problem was. I was dealing with Ben, who went above and beyond helping me.

I brought in my 03 xterra for an exhaust manifold replacement because I couldnt get some old bolts loose. Ben gave me a quote including a specific cost if any bolts broke (information other mechanics were hesitant to give). He slotted me in for the morning after I called, didn't break any bolts, and got the car back to me the day after I dropped it off. He even let me in on the way they got the bolts off so that I could do it myself in the future. Ootmar is professional, honest, quick, and friendly, cannot recommend enough!

I found Ootmar more than 20 years ago when they were downtown. They have done an exemplary job of keeping my 30 year old VW Golf ticking along beautifully. Despite a dwindling supply of parts and more than a few frantic emergency calls from me at the end of the day, they have never let me down. I have always felt that I have been treated fairly and my business is appreciated. Working from home has meant the Golf has been retired to the garage for much of the time now and, frankly, I'm missing my monthly visit :)

When I lived in Vancouver I had my car serviced at Ootmar and found them to be personable, professional, straight forward and inspiring confidence. A couple of weeks ago I found myself in Vancouver with urgent messages about engine and brake systems coming from my dashboard. This was complicated by the fact that I was going into hospital in 3 days. Laurence responded quickly to my needs and fitted my car in for servicing in 24 hours. It's rare that I post a review good or bad, but the customer experience and value provided by Ben Main, Rory, and the others at Ootmar is outstanding. After years of feeling overcharged and undervalued by dealerships, and at a friend's recommendation, I took our Subaru and Audi A4 in for general servicing and repairs. They went beyond expectations in explaining the work and costs, as well as resolving a glitch the occurred after one repair. If you're looking for a trustworthy auto repair shop, go to Ootmar.

Ben is really great. Always happy and easy to discuss the repairs and costs with. Two times now I have walked in with an urgent repair, and without question he has helped me get the car back on the road. I live outside the city and drive the Coquihalla. First time was pretty simple and not a big job, but the second was pretty major and shop was packed and very busy. Still, they found time for me. So appreciative! Very trustworthy as all the mechanics are Red Seal. Highly recommend.

Ootmar is the best mechanic I've had in my life. Extremely honest professionals who will never over-charge or recommend work you don't need. I've brought a couple older cars here over the past 5 years and they help prioritize any repairs from safety concerns down to things I should plan for over the coming year. I'm selling my last car and are recommending buying a much newer car than I planned - even though that means less business for them. Can't recommend highly enough.

Out of all mechanics I’ve been to, Ootmar is the most professional place. My Volkswagen had an oil leak problem. The mechanics were able to diagnose and fix the issue without any tracing dye even though my previous mechanic said it couldn’t be diagnosed otherwise. They were very clear in communication and answered all my questions patiently. I would recommend this place to anyone living in this area

Decided to take both my vehicles to Ootmar based on previous Google Reviews. Glad I did. There was a miscommunication on a desired service for one of my vehicles - I ended up getting the shop materials comp'd (even though I was willing to come to another arrangement given that the work had been completed). They wanted a happy customer more than the $. I'm happy and will be returning in the future.

I've worked with many mechanics over the years in taking care of my courier vehicles and am very fortunate to have found Ben at Ottmar. Excellent service and has gotten me out of way too many difficult situations......on short notice. Very personable , reasonable and stands behind his work and parts. Fantastic mechanics and people! Super fast and friendly service. Ben and Mike were totally honest with the issue and potential cost and even advised that for such an old car the serious repairs needed likely wouldn’t be worth it. They also gave me a courtesy car to use for 3 days which massively helped with my move (my car couldn’t have broken down at a worse time). Great experience with Ootmar.

Ben was so generous and amazing today. My Ford Escape stalled twice before I finally arrived at Ootmar. I had a crazy busy day ahead and it was a rough start. Super honest guys I've been going to for years, first with a Honda Civic and now with my VW GTI. Auto labour/parts are expensive, but you get what you pay for here as they are personable and easy going. They recently went above and beyond doing a small job for free as some of my parts went missing (still remains a mystery)... I highly recommend.

Brought our Hyundai in for a check up/service and the staff were great. Ben (at front desk) was super friendly, and kept is up to date with what needed to be replaced and when our vehicle was ready to be picked up. Parts and labour were also very reasonably priced, so we will certainly be booking our next service here in the future.

Great experience. These guys were fast, professional, transparent and didn't try to jerk me around. One of the best experiences I've ever had. I thought I needed a new power steering pump. They found it was just a leaky hose, replaced it and it was a cheap fix. Many other places would have just replaced the pump for the extra buck.

Both of my recent visits at Ootmar were very pleasant. Opposite to some of the bigger chains, their goal is to obtain long term customers rather then just high turnover. I feel confident that if they were to ever make an error in repairs to my vehicle, they would fix it without question. Great customer service and great mechanics.

The best mechanic I've ever been to. Ben, the manager, is like a family doctor for your car. He tells you what you need to know, and can be trusted to sell you only what is needed and only at a fair price. The proof of this was when I had a burned out tail light, and was only charged a few cents for the price of the light bulb.

Knowledgable and friendly, highly recommend. Our Subaru was just a few weeks from an A service at the dealership (that supposedly included a battery check) then the battery died (luckily in our garage). Ootmar was very clear about the state of the battery (only 1 cell at 70% charge capacity) and suggested a replacement.

Amazing service, communication and friendly staff! Apparently all I needed was for a screw to be tightened up when my windshield wiper was malfunctioning, and not only did they not charge me a penny, they still washed the outside of my car. Will definitely go back for any car repair needs!

Brought in my 16 year old Toyota for an oil change and tune up. It hasn't purred this well in years and the communications and honesty of the mechanic was fantastic, he even solved a rattle that I didn't realize was bothering me. I'll come back.

These guys are the best! Really convenient location and they allow you to pick your car up after-hours if you have to work late by retrieving your keys from a lock box. Super professional and friendly. Definitely my new go-to shop!

Ben was very helpful at pointing out the potential upcoming maintenance fees. The price for a synthetic oil change was very reasonable. Just be mindful that you might need to book a few days in advance.
