This is the worst Safeway I have ever been to. You do not want to complain about anything as your concerns will be dismissed and you will be accosted by the management and employees. After waiting for one to appear, I asked the deli worker if they had imported Swiss cheese - the worker had to bring in a co-worker to translate my question. I never got an answer to my question. When I asked for thin slices separated by paper, I was handed a mess of paper with completely inconsistently cut slices which were thick at one end shaved off into paper thin at the other end. And that was after I physically demonstrated how I would like them stacked. The worker then proceeded to have a conversation in another language with Jorge about something obviously funny to them both. When another apparent deli worker came to the counter he expressed his indignation that I should be dissatisfied and proceeded to instruct me how to express my dissatisfaction. He then summoned a so-called manager who instructed the deli workers not to service me further and then called the police on me. At no time did I raise my voice, gesticulate in inordinate fashion, swear or grimace. This so-called manager pulled the nuclear option for making a perfectly legitimate complaint. A call to their corporate office resulted in being hung up on, the 1st time and I await a call back from them based on a 2nd call, moments later. I urge anyone reading this to complain vociferously to the management at this location in order to teach them to accept complaints like customer service professionals. The so-called manager in question should NOT be allowed to interact with customers - no one else should have to deal with an experience like that. The deli worker should be able to speak fluent English and co-workers should be taught to mind their own business, not take sides and not to eyeball customers in a menacing way. After leaving the store, one employee came out to stand with an associate from the liquor store across the street and talked about how he would don sunglasses and use a machete to "take care" of the incident. Wonderful hiring practices, Safeway - you really nailed it at this location - NOT!
They call it the Soviet Safeway for a reason ... empty shelves and long lines. Nonetheless, it's my neighborhood grocery store and I stick up for it. Staff is usually friendly. It's not their fault that it's a small store for such a large community and they don't have much space for on the shelves or the back storage. However, yesterday was unusually bad. They only had the self-check out option available and only four of those machines were working. No live cashiers, and not enough self-checkouts. One staff member could not keep up with the problems that people were having on the machines. So, four machines, but then only one or two was functioning at any given moment. They other machines would have someone standing around waiting for the "customer support" of the one poor staff member who was bouncing around like a ping pong ball. There never seems to be enough staff for the size of the store. Most of my time there yesterday I saw only the one self-checkout staff, I couldn't find anyone to answer a question for me. Two other staff showed up at the end. A staff member made an announcement, something about not enough staff members came to work that day. In my mind, having a lot of staff not showing up at work is a sign of bad working conditions. I'd heard years ago that this store had the highest per square foot sales for the produce section in the country. Granted the section is small, but it seemed like a big deal. Safeway would do well to treat the staff and customers at this store better. I usually drive to another store, but still try to give them some business ... and see if conditions have improved. In this case, the conditions were awful.
It's a typical grocery store, nothing more. But it's conveniently located, and the staff are very helpful. Apparently it used to be (is still?) called the “Soviet” Safeway because of its small size and sparse shelves, but it doesn’t really seem much better or worse than any other Safeway around here. The carts are restricted so that you really can’t even take them out of the store, because people used to steal them all the time, but most people don’t buy enough stuff that they need a cart, because there’s no parking - people just come in and get enough stuff for a few days. One time I saw Ted van Griethuysen buying groceries there. He’s a renowned local actor at the Shakespeare Theatre - an incredibly talented guy who's over eighty years old and still working hard. I used to get the banana pudding from the deli a lot, but one of the employees told me there's no banana in it, so I stopped. It’s hard to get good banana pudding in DC! It still hasn't really changed much since I got here. Some favorite products come and go. I've started getting cups of powdered stuff for lunch, since going back to the office occasionally: powdered mashed potatoes, powdered mac & cheese, powdered pancakes (?) and so on. Some of those are sold here. They're pretty cheap. You're not going to find powdered processed food at Whole Foods Market.
Horrible experience. I wonder why most people have great things to report but then I get attitude and unprofessionalism. I asked for cigarettes. I said where are they so I can choose then Ms Michelle at register 3 says we don't sell menthol cigarettes I never said what I wanted I said may I choose. And I said I know any real smoker knows menthols and flavored tobacco was said to be banned from The District of Columbia they are banned in the District of Columbia. I'm ex military so a smoke is a smoke. She then saids with attitude all we have is Marlboro silver. I said ok. Then she starts asking someone questions and then starts complaining about where the man is and is there anyone in a room I guess both were a no. Then a guy walks in from outside and she said Marlboro Silver. He came back with the cigs I said thank you not a peep not even acknowledgement I spoke. Bad experience I was hungry so I got something already cooked and just wanted to go home. These days and times all people truly don't get served the same so sad. Safeway has been around for decades her entire time at that register was a true misrepresentation of the quality of service I remember from as far back as the 1970's the great service. Won't go back .
Stocking is okay. It’s not uncommon for a particular item that I am looking for to be out of stock, but it’s also not chronic. Hours are convenient. Unfortunately, I feel that some cashiers can be incredibly rude depending on their mood. I’m in my 30s (f/Asian), but the way they have spoken to me on several occasions is as if they were a teacher and I were a misbehaving high school student (e.g., reprimanding me for not putting items very specifically where they thought I should during self check-out even though I put them in a designated weighing area and I purposely avoid the back area because I don’t want to forget them; being nasty when I had a question about a coupon and openly complaining that I was making more work for them, arguing the coupon didn’t apply when it clearly did, and saying I was holding up the line when the store was not busy and had many other checkout lanes and self-checkout stations open(Ana)). I have also had perfectly nice cashiers, but the multiple instances of rude and boarder-line demeaning behavior make me weary during check-out, and I avoid the store if I can buy what I am looking for elsewhere.
Convenient location, lots of food options (canned, bagged or 'fresh' in plastic cartons), but unfortunately Safeway products always have so much sodium! (To their credit, all products are clearly labeled for calories, sodium, saturated fat and sugar.) In the evening, the meat/fish/fresh salad counter is manned/femanned by helpful persons who do not have much knowledge of the products for sale. So if you are buying a steak or a turkey, visit in the morning or afternoon. Didn't see any freshly-made baked goods. Great, easy-to-understand self check-out. Cashiers are friendly and helpful, most of the time. However, one time I shopped at 10:00 PM, and male cashier said he had to "catch his bus," so he checked me out, I paid, and he left and I had to bag all my groceries by myself (4 bags). Skelton staff in evenings (surprised that no one is restocking shelves in the late evenings like most grocery stores) so either lazy store management or Safeway cost-cutting measure. If you need to pick up a few items, OK to shop, but go elsewhere for weekly grocery shopping.
Really don’t want to be hard on this neighborhood Safeway, but they keep managing to find ways to fail. Management that is. (The cashiers, thankfully, no longer fiddle with their phone playlists while checking you out.) Management seems to be trying to save $30 every night by having only one cashier available from like 10 to midnight. They’ve closed the self check out by this time so that means you can end up with a wait of up to 5-10 minutes to get some small item. It looks like there’s a manager on duty at the same time but I’ve never seen him pop over to open a register when the one line gets long. UPDATE: Still an issue. Just 1 cashier. 10 minute wait. 4 other staff nearby chatting. None qualified to run the register? UPDATE 2: hooray! It’s 11:30 PM and this Safeway now has 2 self checkouts open in addition to the cashier. And the manager quickly came over to help me with a problem with my register. So changing to four stars.
It's the neighborhood grocery with a steady supply of beggars out front. Always long lines given I've never seen more than 2 or 3 cashiers. Self checkout helps. Decent item selection for the store's size is the only reason I can give 2 stars. I've overheard employees having very personal conversations, as well as being reprimanded by management in the store in front of customers. If there was another decently priced option I'd go there. EDIT: Changed from 2 stars to 1 star for two reasons. 1) this store has since taken away very valuable real estate inside for wine and beer, which half the time I shop there is closed off due to alcohol sale times allowed in DC. At the same intersection you have two independent liquor stores. They totally could have used that aisle to improve their selection of food items. 2) There is a clear disregard for item expiration dates. BE CAREFUL!
This store has many of the essentials at a fair price, which I appreciate. However, management must address problems with the check-out situation. There is usually only one cashier working at this store a time. Often, it is a gentleman who has a disability. He does a very good job, although understandably moves pretty slowly. The issue is that the other employees do not help this employee manage checkouts by opening up other lanes or registers. This results in a very long line in the store that winds through the aisles. Frequently people get frustrated, and I unfortunately recently watched a patron argue with and be disrespectful to the store's lone cashier. It would be helpful if the store employed more cashiers, and at a minimum would redirect employees to open more cash registers when the line in the store gets excessively long.
Its in a good location serving a young population of well payed couples. The shop is past it's best. It tries to keep up by cramming as much as it can into a small space. It fails, it doesn't have everything. But it tries. It's a little claustrophobic and takes time to find things. It has the worst fried food possible. Paying is also compact on the up side prices are cheaper than whole foods. Money machine often out of money. A key cutting machine. Place yo park bike may a bit of street parking but generally a busy street. Infront of a remodeled McDonald's. Clean and bright. Homeless on both sides of the street. Mostly harmless. Liquor store and sandwich shop near by and a selection of resturants.
Shopping here is like shopping in a third world country. In the neighborhood we call this store, The Soviet Safeway. The store is poorly stocked at all times, it smells awful, the temperatures are always extreme, it's either under 65° or over 80°, and the employees treat you like cattle and have horrible attitudes. Make sure to check expiration dates since most of the food is set to expire the day it's purchased or shortly there after. Some shelves are stocked with expired food. With a Harris Teeter, a Whole Foods, and a Trader Joe's in the area there is no need to shop at this store. You'd honestly be better off shopping for groceries at the 711 up the block or the McDonald's across the street.
It's not a bad store for the inner city. They have a decent selection of inventory for a small story. My biggest issue is that I do NOT like seeing zero cash registers available and only self checkout. It's good to have the latter but it's not good when the latter is the only option. Edit: Thanks for your reply to my review but if you represent this company you should be taking the feedback to the appropriate personnel. Why would I need to "contact the store leadership"? Is that like forcing me to checkout my own purchases? No thanks!, I have a job....do yours! (minus another star) This just means I'm doing more shopping at your competitor's unless you can get your act together.
This is the least service-oriented supermarket I’ve ever been in and it’s sad that this is what we are stuck with in the DuPont neighborhood. Stopped in for a few things at 5:25 on a Friday - peak time - and OF COURSE all of the self service checkouts were already closed for the night. Two registers were open with lines to the back of the store. Just went in again tonight. One register open (none of the self checkouts of course) with a long line. It’s really not very expensive to hire a second person in a relatively large store. It’s just frustrating. I don’t go here unless I’m desperate, and even then I end up leaving without buying anything 75% of the time.
The review is responding to a woman cashier. I bought a lot of stuff, but she didn’t offer any help at all. I said I had coupon but I don’t know how to use it and she didn’t say anything. At last the system did not go through my coupon at all. She did ask me if I need any bag (as process required I guess). I said no because I brought my own backpack and a large grocery bag. And I loaded all the stuff by myself. Finally I found out I still need a bag so I took one Safeway bag. At the moment I stepped out the Safeway, she called me and said next time I need to pay 5 cents for that bag. She is not helpful at all and gives you a strong vibe of obliviousness
This is a wonderful grocery store. They do have a card that you need, which is free, in order to get many of the advertised sales. We did not know that at the time, but the manager helped me get signed up and gave me $25 back on the spot once we were signed up, no questions asked. I would shop here everyday if I lived in this neighborhood. Someone posted some pictures of the shelves falling down and empty. It is nothing like that. It is safe, clean, and friendly place to shop. It is small, but everything in that area of DC is crowded together so that is to be expected. We were amazed at the variety they had in such a small location.
Honestly this store is the worst grocery store I’ve ever been to. Been going here since I’ve lived in the area since it’s cheaper than Whole Foods, the other neighborhood grocery store. I appreciate the store makes use of every inch, but they’re constantly running out of basics like eggs or milk. In the last two weeks, I’ve had to wait at the front of the store to get a cart or even a basket. Fine store if you need a few things you can carry yourself, but horrible to stock a household for a week. Seriously debating driving out of the neighborhood or spending Whole Foods money on groceries.
“The customer always comes last” is the working motto of this Safeway. The problem of Self check-out closing too early and only one, or at most two cashiers working at night, even when there are long lines, is exasperated by the cashiers tendency to finish whatever personal business they have before checking you out. That business varies from adjusting their phones music playlist to chitchatting with anyone within earshot. Some might like the laid-back and “friendly“ atmosphere, but plenty of businesses managed to be both friendly and efficient. One need not be sacrificed for the other.
My one experience here was awful. Contacted the store about a package I had sent there and the store manager/director was very quick to exclaim their non liability policy as it pertained to Fedex drop-offs. I understood the policy but at no time was there an effort to make some sort of customer resolution not even a simple apology for the inconvenience. There was just a frank dismissal. This was very disappointing especially since I frequently shop at SafeWay in Fairfax, VA almost daily. I sincerely hope this woman was not a reflection of her leadership.
Not as big as other Safeway I have gone to in the past. Products out of place or they just didn't have it at all. To the customer that's never going in that store before you might not see the carts. There is a wall of merchandise that stands between the entrance way and where the carts are. Not good!!...Update...Nothing has changed..Employee's are rude ...Finally someone's got it right ...Thank goodness!! ..And thank you to the young lady who would help me on this day...When I needed it on multiple occasions ( Self check out Cashier)
Always super- friendly staff. Gone there for atleast 10 years. When in town, for work, often get groceries ready to eat. Competitve pricing and good options including Organic and Fresh Produce. Kusos to the staff. Sometimes, sale prices do not come up at register, and the staff is always Johnny- on- the- spot in ameliorating that issue. (Photo attached: This is a minor item but for me I purchased 3 or 4 over time from Safeway as gifts. It is a satchel/ sachet of fragrance that warms up any room or car with a mild yet pungent fragrance).
This location of Safeway is called Soviet Safeway for a reason. The shelves are poorly stocked and are often half empty. I found it very hard to shop here with a recipe in mind since they often only had half the ingredients I needed. The staff are friendly and will help you find anything or check in the stock room for you. This store is kept relatively in order and clean. This is a fine neighborhood grocery store and great for canned goods, but now that Trader Joe's is open on 14th and T that will be my new go-to shop.
Overall a good store, except that most of their prepared fruit is inedible because unripe (watermelon, pineapple, mango). Pears and avocados are also frequently inedible because unripe. Now they want to repurpose a couple of aisles for beer and wine sales, which will severely impact their use of an already small space and further limit food choices. This is really stupid because there is already a great liquor store NEXT DOOR. Safeway, are you trying to make your customers defect to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods forever?
Goodafternoon everyone it is 4/25/22 i gave this business a 5 based on one person and her name is Charmaine. Kudos for your wonderful customer service and your attention to my needs because at that time YOU were going in another direction in the store however I Apologized for interrupting you, you rushed right over and helped me OUT! (I am the 1 that needed the buttermilk) but I wanted to say you to me are a great asset to this Safeway and kudos for the people that may encounter you everyday. THANK YOU, Alani
It's a Safeway, but not a lot of organic options and has limited supplies due to the size. They only had one brand of dry shampoo which isn't a big deal just annoying. Okay self checkout, but weirdly loud. The voice kept announcing everything very loudly and nothing scanned on the first try and then the voice would say very loudly "are you done?" or something. It's not my fault you need to press the item against the scanner. It's okay for a quick trip but I would go somewhere else to be honest.
I live down the street and have been coming here for a year, there is a reason the locals call this the “Soviet Safeway”. You only come here if you are looking for dairy or prepackaged foods, otherwise you go elsewhere if you need something fresh. The fresh food selection is almost nonexistent, no butcher or seafood counter, vegetables are in poor condition if they are even stocked, nasty staff who can be quite hostile to ask questions from, and a deli counter that is barely functional.
"The Soviet Safeway" has not only outlasted the USSR by 23 years, it has managed to get worse in the meantime. Don't want "self check-out", then you can just get lost. That's the message from the sullen employees who hate their jobs as much as their customers. And charge you $3.99 for a dozen eggs when full service Trader Joes charges you $2.29. Time was when people fought to keep smaller inner city grocery stores like this open. Now, you appreciate they deserve to shutter permanently.
I shopped here a few times while I was in town visiting. The place is quite small but has everything you could need from a regular sized grocery store. The staff though is quite uninviting it seemed like everytime I was there everyone was super angry at the world and didn't want to be bothered with your questions. One of the girls who checked us out was on her phone the whole time while ringing up items and didn't even acknowledge us or tell us our total just stared at her phone.
I have shopped at Safeway on 17th and Corcoran St. for about 30 years. While it has never been perfect—often far from it—it is close by and convenient. There are some new employees post-pandemic, however, whose attitude is decidedly hostile towards customers. I know what a hard job it is and how much these workers have suffered through the pandemic. But an incident yesterday was beyond the pale. I will avoid shopping here from now on. Being abusive to customers is never ok.
Consistently terrible. Bad selection, bad service and the store is always a disaster. Today at 5pm there was not a single staffed register. Self-checkout only, the line for which went all the way down the aisle. Still, there were a handful of employees walking around seemingly aimlessly. One gentleman working with produce had a safeway lanyard but was wearing loose fitting sweatpants with the drawstring sticking out and a dirty t-shirt.
The staff is friendly and very helpful. I find most of what I want, but I can count on looking for something that's not in stock This is annoying because I live .5 miles away, and walking, and won't go back the next day to look again. All in all, it's pretty good. Location is convenient for the neighborhood, though there is no Metro nearby and parking is difficult most times. There is a great True Value hardware store across the street
On the plus side, they jam a lot into a small, old-school space. But if you go at a time other than during the day on a workday, expect third-world country-like lines. It's deliberately understaffed - they start shutting down the self-serve stations well before closing time, and rarely have more than 2 cashiers open. They know they have a near-monopoly and milk it for all that it's worth, essentially giving the bird to their customers.
Been going to this place for almost a year now. The selection of meat is terrible; the containers of chicken are sometimes leaking, best buy dates are often unmarked or shelved beyond the date, and they don't have many good cuts of meat when they are fresh. The quality of produce is bad, such as moldy onions. The back warehouse emits a bad stench as you walk past it. It's disgusting, and I rather walk further on for far better food.
ZERO stars......This store was designed by an A-hole. O get mad everytime i go in there. The customer service is horrible. You are not even permitted to wheel your cart. The auto lock is right outside the front door, so carts get stuck and cause safety issues. There are better ways to keep your carts from getting stolen. It would be nice to alt least get them to the curb so I could unload my groceries...... I hate this store.
This Safeway is tight and cramped, and always so busy, especially after work days. The lines are super long, starting at 5 PM or so. Although there's a nice selection here, and I think prices are OK, I always have to grit my teeth in preparation when it's time to come to this store. I feel fortunate that Dupont has access to a mainstream grocery store here, but I think that this Safeway could be doing better than it is.
This store is the worst Safeway ever. The stuff treat you as cattle and nor friendly. Management very por. I was there and a African American young lady at the cashier treat me as cattle I call the customer services they told me that the maneget will be calling me. Never get phone call from then. Be carful with expired products. Be carful with the meat I get ground beef meat there when I get home was black inside
This by far the worst grocery store I've ever had to deal with. Constantly out of stock (of whatever I'm trying to buy), expensive, and often ALL checkout lanes are closed, so you HAVE to use the incredibly frustrating self-checkout machines, with their unexplained beeps and errors. I really hate this store, and so now only buy a few items here and look to Costco and Trader Joe's for most stuff.
the self checkout isn't really self checkout as soon as you put something that you can in the bag the machine has to call for a assistant to scan a code for you to continue which slows the service all the way down because this assistant is helping everyone else. I'm not trying to steal anything prices are low enough but I have a 30 minute break for lunch so please speed up that process
Why is the Soviet Safeway so cold? It's 55 degrees outside today and the store is much colder. Is it to keep thier produce fresh? Nothing fresh I buy here (produce, milk, etc) ever lasts more than 48 hours so my theory is the keep it freezing to try to make the fresh stuff last longer. Can someone please explain why it it so cold in this store?!
Small, but convenient. Used to be called Soviet Safeway for limited selection (due to limited size). But it is not bad. Different selection from Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. Between three of them you can find most grocery items you want at different price points and health preferences. Prices are not necessarily lower than in Whole Foods.
A supermarket excels when flow is maximized and this one often seems to relish hindering flow. They rarely have more than one checker who scans your groceries which I would not begrudge if the self scanners were all going. Most often, however, they have 2 or more of the 6 down and a light flashing for service as a tired employee looks on.
This location sucks. No parking and any and everytime you go inside. There's never any inventory. Doing instacart offers at this location is a headache and a half. Management needs to revise their store goals and plans. Because as of now, they're sorely lacking for the customers who frequent this store location on Corcoran street NW.
Female manager (couldn’t get her name because she was too embarrassed probably to say it) was miserable. Some people aren’t cut out for customer service like her. Will never go back. Plus they don’t take care of the outside and it is disturbing going in there. I’ll stick with Harris Teeter from no on even though it’s miles further.
This grocery store would get 5 stars if it wasn’t for the deli counter foods. I bought potato salad and seafood salad. Safe right? I mean it’s potatoes and mayo in one, seafood and mayo in the other… WRONG and WRONG! It was terrible. They added onions and lots of salt to both salads. Yuuuuck. Wasted my money… bad, bad experience.
Only two self checkouts were in operation in the entire store. Accordingly you had a massive queue. Not only is this super inefficient but at a time where you want to minimize the time spent by customers inside a grovery storye, I also find it quite irresponsible. End result, I just left and went grocery shopping somewhere else.
Nice, competent staff--subpar--slow, fumbling, unresponsive management. Not known as the Soviet Safeway for nothing. Shelves are not restocked based on demand--so there is frequently a shortage of Tropicana grapefruit juice or plain soda water., for example. Too few cashiers are working. There has been no lox latetely, etc....
My closest grocery store that I frequent a lot. I never know exactly what I am going to get but it is mostly a positive experience. I have seen a few expired items here which is strange since it is such a small store. The employees are always nice though, but the lines are long. Overall it serves it's purpose.
Its thoroughly ok. Has a deli, but when they sliced my meat the plastic was still on. Have alcohol but got rid of food to make space. Have self check out but it's slow. The door to the loading dock usually smells pretty bad. Avoid Sunday and Monday because lines are really long even for this normal ush time.
The place is really pack with everything like others Safeway even although is smaller, my only issue in my visit it was the heat, this locatiosn is extremely cold! I was able to see the steam of my breath it was nuts! I saw the cashier shacking while goving me the receipt, I hope the do something about it.
By far the worst Safeway I've ever shopped at. Cramped, lacking essentials, non-sensically organized, staff horribly overworked (but trying hard to be friendly), insultingly-long wait for cashier at busy times. There are 8 self-serve checkout machines, and usually 5 of them are not functioning.
Went to this Safeway today and there were tons of moldy russet potatoes. There was also weird gunk on the meat shelves that looked like weeks of dry meat juice buildt up. I had high hopes for this market since it's the closest to my house but I'll just walk a little further to another market.
Soviet Safeway stock mismanagement is back. Produce, meat, sale coffee, all picked over or sold out completely. Left without buying a anything because what I wanted wasn't available. Really disappointing but pretty consistent for this location the 30 years I've lived in the neighborhood.
Rude staff. They dump your groceries into a cart without asking if you want any bags, then, when you ask for some, they’ll condescendingly hand you the bags and tell you to get out of the way while you bag your groceries. The self-checkout machines are almost always out of service, too.
this safeway is usually referred to as the "soviet safeway" b/c shelves are often empty and they run out of stuff. i haven't really found this to be true when i go, but i go pretty rarely. i find most things fine and find self checkout to be fairly smooth, so i have no problems with it.
The place is ok shop here several times the problem that I have is that I was doing a order and a lady who was cashing out said that she was close I had to move to another lane and when I was in another lane she stated cashing people out I think that’s racism because I’m not colored
I lived on R st during the worst of Covid, and the employees (especially one of them, he always said hi to me even though I went to Safeway just once a week... I wish I remembered his name) and none of the workers ever seemed “pissed off” and in general were positive and helpful.
I haven't been to this Safeway in a long time. I forget how small and cramped this place is. It's very clean and decent. It's located around the DuPont Circle area. But it's not the best one to go to in DC. It's limited, and they have no bakery dept!!! That ruined it for me.
This is pretty much just your average city grocery store. They have everything you need but probably not quite everything you want. I go here multiple times a week and it’s always clean, well stocked and employees are friendly. Just don’t expect too much from the inventory.
Friendly staff andrese, Mr Tim, Camille, Lawrence and Ricky are always willing to help. They are always in high spirits and get things done They are professional and prompt and always smiling. I have been a costumer since my son was 1 he is now 9 I love this store.
This store is nicknamed the soviet Safeway for a reason. They simply don’t seem to restock the shelves during the day, often leaving the shelves empty. It is not uncommon for me to run to the store looking for a few things and end up walking out with none of them.
This particular Safeway is trash but it's the closest grocery store to my home. I would recommend you go to Harris teeter instead. I know that's kind of confusing for a grocery store, but really the quality of food here is somehow worse than your typical Safeway.
Stuff often go expired here but they still sell these. You have to look carefully. Staff are extremely rude and are the most rude people I have ever seen on earth since I was born. This store should definitely be closed and also fire the manager and her staff.
I'm often disappointed with the food selections here. Some of my favorites disappear ... or are relocated so I have trouble finding them. On the other hand, I'm often pleased to find new offerings, such as Sabra Guacamole in a snack pack. It's tasty and mild!
It’s bizarre to have deodorant behind locked cases but not beer and wine. Beyond that, it’s a typical small neighborhood grocery store with the basics and a hot meal bar. There are other grocery options in the area but this gets the job done for small needs.
I came here this morning to pick-up a few things for the week that were basic sundry items. The first thing that I noticed on a sweltering day like today was the blast of air conditioning that hit me the second that I walked thru the door.
A supermarket with no bathroom. If you're having problems with people coming in off the streets abusing it, put a lock and charge whatever amount the laws of supply/demand dictate. Easy solution, and it would apparently be one of your best
Lines to the back of the store and little social distancing going on. This location is completely incapable of getting customers in and out of the store safely in a reasonable time-frame. I left without my groceries and won't be going back.
Surprising large supermarket for an urban area. Good selection of prepared foods. In addition to all the groceries you need, cleaning supplies and basic pharmaceuticals are also available. Check out lines can get a little busy at times.
Self-checkout hardly ever works (why did they bother if the machines are broken all the time?). The place in understaffed, so lines are long. The only reason for giving two stars is the fact that this supermarket has good opening hours.
Small, convenient neighborhood grocery store. Selection is predictably limited per the size, and prices are predictably high considering the area. That said, the produce is fresh, staff are friendly enough, and the place is kept clean.
Cramped little Safeway. Probably the smallest safeway I've ever been to, but there was still no line on a Saturday afternoon. I got everything I needed, even if the frozen seafood wasn't very well stocked. The produce was lovely!
Interesting, in city, miniature, Safeway. The employees are friendly, the self checkout is clean and quick, the store is amazingly well laid out. Even though less than half the size of the usual store I found all I needed, fast.
This is a very friendly safeway, the cashier greeted me as I walked in. It was very clean and had everything we need, I picked up some pasta and broccoli, and the self-checkout area is large, and we were out the door quickly.
Not how it use to be • scale of 1 to 10 6. quick item pickups. Meats look crazy, in addition, I always have to scan my items. I work 12 hour days, then have to go to the grocery store, do work, bag my stuff, with no pay
I was told there wasn’t a way to get a frequent shoppers card at check out. This costed me an extra $10+. Selection was mediocre and barely any cheaper than Whole Foods ($8 rotisserie chicken versus $8.50 at Whole Foods)
Simple selection for your basics. Avoid busy times, as there's always a line. You'll spend more time in line than you will finding your items. Good customer service, but the shelves could be stocked more frequently.
Clerks are unfriendly and sometimes rude. Before Covid the store was poorly stocked. Items coming and going. Find something you like and you can be sure after a week or so it disappears from the shelf for good.
This is a convenient location. The employees are mostly friendly, but really try to push those Safeway cards to people who don't want them. They are pretty good with managing long lines and restocking quickly.
Love the way that they've redesigned the store. The isles are still the same sides, but it more accessible. Especially the product department. Very good thoughts went into the new look. Keep up the good work.
Known as 'Soviet Safeway' for a reason. Somewhat barren shelves, often with the most unexpected items completely sold out. Hit or miss produce. Dark and gloomy deli. But the staff tends to be pretty friendly.
Got yelled at for trying to buy alcohol after 7pm. Sorry lady I can't read your mind. Usually at grocery stores the things on the shelves are for sale. Maybe a sign would help, or just basic human decency?
Decent grocery store and central to the DC area and DuPont circle. Nice staff and great walking distance from all the central businesses and the main residential area where many young professionals live.
It's a old location, that doesn't have a lot of space! They don't have fresh seafood or a bakery. You can get basics , along with fresh foods, delicious meats and salads, and some fried chicken
This is a very good grocery store in the Dupont Circle area. The store is clean and well stocked . The lines move fast and the employees are well trained on finding and helping you if needed.
This store is typically well stocked and is never very crowded. You can find good deals if you watch the sale ads and use your Safeway card. I have also found the staff to be very helpful.
It's a nice Safeway but the selection is small, no seafood or meat department, and the deli doesn't have desserts or fresh bread. They do have wine and beer though. And automated ringers.
Small but have the basics. Most items are over priced compared to TJ. No bakery section, stuff run out quickly as many have pointed out. The vibe is ok, new staff are nice and helpful.
I get the rise in food prices, but this store is unbelievable nothing is on sell and if it is, there's a 60% mark up. I will no longer shoo here after 15 years.. Walmart or Giant !
Poor customer service! This store closes at 10pm but they told me It’s too late to purchase a gift card at 9:16pm. This is very unprofessional. And I’m so disappointed.
The store is small, nonetheless, Albertsons removed some food items to make room for beer and wine when Cairo Liquors is just across the street! No bakery. No pharmacy.
Perhaps the most poorly managed grocery store anywhere. Inadequately stocked, surly staff, incompetent butchers, and sale prices often don't show up at register.
Compared to most, it's a small store. It doesn't carry the widest variety of products, but has your basic essentials. Managers are pretty helpful.
Great store, convenient to Dupont Circle area. Good deals, store clerks are helpful, courteous and I have an overall 5 star satisfaction rating.
The only two flaws this store had were that it had no public restrooms. It also felt a was a bit smaller than the closest one from my home.
Store was clean and was actively being stocked. Fruits and vegetables appeared fresh. Don't know local prices but they seemed reasonable.
Spent over $100 and they wouldn't let us use the bathroom. Krohns disease is real. Someone should sue them. Awful customer service.
Staff are rude and Mia store manager who is confused between customers as her employees and calls the white customers privileged
It's sometimes difficult to get help at the deli counter. Also, small store that doesn't have much compared to other locations.
Nice clean grocery store. I got lunch at the deli. The chicken tenders were a little dry, but the wedge fries were pretty good.
Small but convenient which you pay a premium for some things. Did not have a bakery or other amenities. Clean and well stocked.
Seemed to be fully stocked. Didn't like detergents locked up since I have to get an employee to unlock it every time I need it.
