"I went down here alone one afternoon"
"The historical history of these Arches is amazing! There is also a fireman's Memorial for a disaster in 12-22-1910"
"All day long the gates of the packing houses were besieged by starving and penniless men; they came, literally, by the thousands every single morning, fighting with each other for a chance for life"
"It was a short and sweet place to visit"
"This is an out-of-the-way monument to a significant part of Chicago's past when the city was "hogbutcher of the world", in Carl Sandburg's terms"
I went down here alone one afternoon. I liked the monument itself, but as I walked up Morgan Street towards Pershing Road, a car load of shady characters was scoping me out. Thank goodness there was a train coming through and a lot of cars backed up. Who knows what would have happened otherwise. More
The historical history of these Arches is amazing! There is also a fireman's Memorial for a disaster in 12-22-1910. I spent awhile sitting on a bench of which there is plenty. There is street parking. I found it a nice spot to sit and traffic watch. A place I'll be visiting often.
All day long the gates of the packing houses were besieged by starving and penniless men; they came, literally, by the thousands every single morning, fighting with each other for a chance for life. Blizzards and cold made no difference to
It was a short and sweet place to visit. It was very tidy, and there were places to rest as well. My only concern is that the statue and landmark present at the Gates pertain to the firemen who have lost their lives in Chicago, and while
This is an out-of-the-way monument to a significant part of Chicago's past when the city was "hogbutcher of the world", in Carl Sandburg's terms. This spot is also the home of the Fallen 21 memorial, a monument to firefighters killed in
Since I was the Contractor to Rebuild the Stockyards Gated Area back in 2004. I came up with the Flagpole heights to have them at two different heights and have a two sided POW MIA Flag made. Also placing a Special Drain in front of the
This is a neat historical landmark. The Union Stockyards were one of Chicago's most important industries, which played a major role in creating the city that we have today, as well as inspiring the creation of the FDA due to Upton
Incredible historical area, H.H. Holmes used to actually spend time here listening to the pigs. there is also a beautiful tribute to Chicago Firefighters who have passed away I the lone of duty. Not much to do here other than that
My dad left Ga. on a train to Chicago in 1947 at 18 years old and his first job after leaving home was in the stockyards. They’re a lot of history here and a must see for me but I wouldn’t have made the trip if it wasn’t for that
Awesome memorial beyond the entrance. A granite monument dedicated to Chicago Firemen who died in the line of duty making the ultimate sacrifice in giving their life to save another. True heroes.
Cool historical landmark. Beware most of the roads in this area are closed off at night. Only one way out and if your not familiar it may take you a few blocks of circling to figure it out.
If you're a fan of Chicago History, including that of the labor movement and the role of firefighters in the Greatest City in the World, this area is must-see. More
The History of the Countries largest food distribution area of the 19th century can be felt here. Layers upon layers of stories
The gate is a historic place but sort of underwhelming. Definitely read the history on it because that's truly fascinating.
Really nice monument.. just to take a picture.. and leave.. too bad there is nothing else interesting around that area..
It's a great place to tour for a few min, I wish they had a lot more history to read about and a visitors center.
Very cool piece of Chicago history. My tour guide, Harrison was especially informative.
