Windsor station opened as an original station on the (then) Enoggera branch line on 5th February 1899. It was named after the Windsor Division (Shire) (est. in 1887, and named after Windsor Castle to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign) through which it passed. The single track was duplicated as far as Newmarket in 1921, making Windsor an island platform. The current station building would have been constructed at this time. My earliest memories of the station (early 1960s) include the large shady camphor laurel tree just west of the main building, which unfortunately was heavily pruned then removed after electrification of the line. Today, there are more seats and shelters, although little protection is provided from Brisbane storms. The train service is now quite frequent: at 15 minute intervals through the day (Mon. to Fri.) and 30 minute intervals most other times. However, the station office, according to the QR website is only open until lunchtime Mon., Tu., Wed. & Fri. and closes earlier on Thursday. The ramp at the Eildon Road pedestrian crossing end of the platform makes the station accessible for the disabled with assistance, but getting from the limited space car park or street parks to the platform is difficult. Being close to Lutwyche Road bus services is a bonus for people who need to change mode of transport to access destinations off the railway like Lutwyche, the Royal Brisbane Hospital, etc.
I went to Windsor to refund my go card. Mary, an indian woman working at the station told me she couldn't refund my card in cash as she didn't have any cash at all. She said she would have to refund it on to a card but that it would be refunded straight away. She did the refund, I had to put in my pin number as well as sign the receipt. I went straight to the bank to see if the money came back $11. It didn't. I went back to the station to let her know, this was five minutes later. She had the cash draw open this time and it was FULL of cash. I asked her why she lied, no answer. I asked for the refund in cash, she said no again. I told her I would be leaving a review and took out my camera to take a photo so I could prove who served me. She called the police on me saying I was being threatening and abusive. This woman both lied to me about having no cash and then lied to the police about what had taken place. I never got a recipt.
Well-lit and cameras. HOWEVER, there is evidence of hostile architecture (or unpleasant design, as it is also known: the practice of excluding a group of people from a space in such a way that most people won't even notice; exclusionary design) at this station. There are slanted beams for leaning on rather than seating and the seats are designed to be uncomfortable to sleep on as opposed to comfortable to sit on (ie, choice and shape of materials, including the interrupted flow of seating). The money invested in designing this hostile architecture could have been better spent in providing a social solution to our homelessness problem.
