Now this is a vintage theatre! This newly renovated theatre boasts their chic-inspired decor that will surely attract not just the movie lovers but also the young generation to go and try the real ‘movie-date’ experience. Their snack bar has everything to soda pop, candies, sandwiches, salads, muffins, and of course a freshly popped butter popcorns. It’s pink hue everywhere and I like the ambience of nostalgic broadway theatre inside! One of the best part of the plaza is their Sidebar area where you can stay for a drink or have some cocktails or two before the movie. The chairs, tables, wallpaper, photo frames reminds me of an old Cuban bar. They have lots of tables outside their patio too! During Friday and Saturday, their food truck Healthy Baby is open to serve you their famous curry chicken sandwich or their savoury hotdog bun! Inside the main cinema theatre looks really old and maintained enough to keep it clean but not too much renovation to make it look like a modern auditorium. It’s an Open Seating concept so be there way ahead of your film time to get a good spot near the screen. The quality of the projector aren’t that of the lates laser projection you see in modern cinemas. It’s still gives high definition though and the movie screen aren’t too big, but that’s expected in this business. Ticket fare aren’t that expensive and it really helps our beautiful small business owners. One thing I found annoying was the parking. Knowing Kensington on rush hour and weekends, street parking is always full. So plan ahead and make some time to go around the block. This is definitely our go-to cinema for movie-dates!
A small joint in the heart of Kensington, brilliant indie films and the occasional re-run.The people who work there are really chill, closet nerdy, and great to talk to! Popcorn with REAL BUTTER, none of that weird margerine stuff you can get at other theatres. Best part, the new couch fund tip jar (a great cause, really).Being wheelchair accessible is a great feature, and the prices are better than your average theatre. The Plaza has a a lot of instagram worthy hotspots, and it's a lovely place to bring a date. Best time of the year to go, halloween. They have the Rocky Horror Picture Show during that timenof the week, and honestly I've never vibed with more people than at that screening. TL:DR support a non corporate business that supports under-appreciated films. Not your average date night spot, but should be your date night routine. Ps. If you sit on that couch, expect having to roll off in order to get up
almost perfect! just not fully accessible. cute theatre, nice staff, clean building, good concession, and i really appreciated the wheelchair accessible entrance and wheelchair accessible seating in the theatre. there are no stairs to get to your seats, just a slight incline. on google this place comes up as accessible for the bathroom, seating and entrance. unfortunately the bathroom is not accessible. while there is space inside for a wheelchair, i did not see a door button on either side of the bathroom, there is no grab bar by the toilet and the sink and soap dispensers are too high. the bar area that is off to the side is also not wheelchair accessible. there is a step up into the seating/bar area, no ramp or incline there.
The Plaza used to be one of Calgary's great arthouse cinemas, and while that still may be the case, it's now a result of a lack of others in the space as opposed to because of the venue itself. My last visit to the Plaza may have been the most disappointing. While the ticket prices are solid, nothing is being done to update the theatre. The auditorium itself is very cold, the washrooms are in a state of disrepair, and the seats are very very dated. The saving grace is the popcorn and the staff. Still some of the best movie theatre popcorn in the city, and super friendly staff (who are obviously passionate about film). Sadly for the Calgary film community, it feels like this is a venue whose days are numbered.
Although the renovations and concept are lovely, I have to stand firm against businesses that do not accept cash and help push forward the global agenda of digital ID and currency. Since they do not accept cash, I will not be returning. It is really sad because I have been a customer for years, however, the more people and business who comply with digital currency allow for more control and unnecessary surveillance. I hope this review awakens more people to what’s happening because if you willing give up your privacy it will never be returned (you cannot comply your way out of tyranny). I will not comply. Best of luck
I patroned the Plaza Theatre in late March for the first time, because by then it was the only establishment showing Women Talking, which I finally decided to check out due to high culture osmosis. Anyhow, for what it is, this is a very cozy place. The food items are more expensive than the two big Canadian theatre chains (Cineplex and Landmark Cinemas), but I didn't mind, because it was supporting an independent business. The screen in the only theatre room is fine. The one complaint I have is the lack of holders for drinks, making for a cumbersome experience if the room is very crowded.
I cannot express enough, how much I love this nostalgic little theatre, that re-opened in our community. From the current and past movies, to yummo popcorn and a glass of wine, yes, there’s a cozy little bar tucked away in a dark corner (once a storage room), a better time cannot be had, in my humble opinion. Their sunny, licensed patio, quickly became our go to place for ‘magic hour’ on those smokin’ hot days this summer! A big shout-out to Logan, Duncan, Isabella, Katelyn, and of course, Titi. There’s more lovely people, I just can’t recall their names. Go check it out!
I ordered a popcorn with butter. Used interac to pay for popcorn and the first thing that pops up is a request for a tip. For what. Next I'll be paying for the bag the popcorn is in. This has got to stop. Wake up and woke out! Thank you for your reply that you have a side bar. Why would you need a side bar when you can get your hair done 2 doors down while you sip on wine. Where is the world going. I mean that. People can't get away from alcohol. Drugs on the street, alcohol in the theaters and hair salons. Wow.
I have a long standing relationship with the Plaza, and all of it is good. When we were first starting Otafest, the anime film festival in Calgary, we worked with the Plaza to screen Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke as part of the festival. They were awesome about helping us out with it, and show interesting movies there to this day. My wife and I made a trip down there recently to see Arrival, and it's still got that same old charm. Be advised, the concession is cash-only. :)
The Plaza is a great venue to take your time and savor the experience of the cinema - you show-up to see THE show that is on in THE theatre, and I like that. I like the singular focus of the event, the uncomfortable seats, the worn screen, the stage. I like buying my ticket with my popcorn. The pink lobby. The Plaza invites me to connect with the film through my participation with the space: it doesn't force the experience upon me.
An old style theater that reminds me of Montreal's old répertoire cinemas, like the Ouimetoscope and the Outremont. It is older establishment, the seats could be better, the carpets have seen better days, but the building has soul, the selection of films is unique and there are no shortage of good places to eat or have coffee all around, before or after the show. Keep doing what you do, Plaza Theatre!
Generations of Calgarian's have enjoyed this theater and it is well loved! You wont get the same experience as the big box theaters in town but that's ok. There are so many great spots in the area to eat before or after and you can always get a seat. They always have fun stuff happening from hosting film fests to the 5th reel events. Calgarys last original theater. Support and keep it going!
First time going here. We went on a weekday evening, so not sure how big the crowd gets in this place. It’s a quaint theatre with cute vintage decor. It also has a little bar inside that extends out as a patio. Great date night idea if you wanted something simple. Plus, it’s in Kensington so lots of places to have dinner prior to or after a movie. Staff was also friendly.
It's a participation theatre. They sell baggies of props for you to use throughout the movie. Jeering is also encouraged. The cinema has an aged feel but not under cared for. It's a new way to experience old movies you love. Think of it as watching beloved films with friends who knows all the innuendos and references. What a lovely time I've had here. I'd do it again.
love this theater to bits! you guys dont seem to have an email account but if anyone at the plaza happens to see this i would love if you did a screening of the room! its interactive like rocky horror and a cult classic, just seems like the type of movie that would fit the plaza’s whole vibe. also ive always wanted to see it in theatres so that would be amazing
First time visiting since they have done their renovation. Super cute vibe. Felt very nostalgic! The only bummer was that we went to see a matinee on Saturday and were told the Sidecar bar wasn't open until 4pm so we couldn't bring a cocktail into the movie with us but online it says it's open earlier. Overall great experience and friendly staff.
The staff was very friendly and with good sense of humour, the facilities were clean and with a decent snacks and sweets selection (didn't try the though). The temperature was a bit colder than it needed to be but nothing a light sweater that you would bring to a theatre anywhere couldn't fix. I even enjoyed the movie Call Jane! …
Great little cozy theatre, held in a somwhat retro style, characteristic to the area. It hosts some nice screenings and film festivals and if you ever have a chance to witness on of those events, I would highly recommend it. Their official website however needs a complete makeover, it's very uninformative and isnt too user friendly
The Renovations are amazing. The drink menu is very well done, and yet none of this would matter if they didn't follow through and deliver (to this point and with no signs of slowing down) a very well curated list of films. One could watch only the titles screened at the plaza and get to see the most important films of the year.
Lovely theatre. Without them a bunch of movies I’ve enjoyed over the years wouldn’t be something I could see on the big screen. The staff are friendly and their snacks are different from the same predictable ones you see at other theatres. Their popcorn isn’t quite as good as I’ve heard from others but it’s still pretty good!
The Plaza Theatre not only transports you to other worlds with amazing films, it does it in an amazing theatre from yesteryear. The prices are affordable for families and seniors and the staff actually are excited to see you there. If you haven't been there for a while or if it's your first time, treat yourself and enjoy!
I'm deeply disturbed over the fact that the Red Pill Screening has been canceled at your theatre. You have given in to the oppressers. We all have the right to freedom of speech. You were paid for a service that you offer and have now backed out of. You will no longer have my business or the business of those close to me.
I've passed this theatre so many times but have never gone inside - I'm so glad I was able to change that recently! Great prices for tickets and concession items. The theatre did get a little chilly, but, it's October and I never dress appropriately for the weather so that is on me. Looking forward to my next visit!
Cool place to see a movie you couldn't see in a chain theater. Problem is, it's still not very cheap, old uncomfortable seats, dirty washrooms, no air conditioning. We had to leave as it was so hot in there it was unbearable. For how much you pay, it's not worth it. Go to Canyon Meadows where it's cheaper and nicer.
It felt like we were kids again. The excitement for a yummy popcorn and the feel of how it was 30+ years ago. This was a great date night with the perfect atmosphere. I can't wait to take my son's there and show them how Dad used to watch movies. Thank you for what you are doing here. It has an effect on people.
Great historic theatre in the heart of Kensington. They show non mainstream movies & hold special viewings of films you can’t see anywhere else. Staff and the theatre itself is awesome with Calgary not having many historical buildings left. I love watching special documentaries and film oldies here. Great place
The Plaza is one of the best theatres (along with the globe) in Calgary. This is where you can see all the best films & film festivals. Anything not deemed "mainstream" enough to be shown in the mall. This is the only theatre I go to. Also in a fantastic location in Kensington near many great restaurants.
The design in this theatre is amazing! -The film details (time, which movie…) are listed clearly outside -Sitting area with a fully pink barbie theme - The bar inside is in green nature theme, which create a great contrast with the pink outside It would be great if subtitles can be offered for the movie.
There's a certain aspect to the Plaza that makes it very special. It's a little run down but it comes off as character. The Plaza tends to show smaller movies and films that are much more unique. I highly suggest checking out The Fifth Reel screenings. They serve alcohol and it's generally a fun a time.
Growing up, I worked in a movie theater just like this. My five star rating based on the overall experience, including nostalgia. The popcorn is the best I've had in the city, and that staff is extremely nice. They could usefully renovate the theater, but I understand that money is probably an issue.
I can’t even begin to explain how much I love the plaza 2.0. Big shout out to not changing the bathrooms in the reservation! The speak east bar is fabulous, and the movie selection is wonderful. I take myself on movie dates once a week there and it’s my escape from realty! Love the staff too!
Kelly and all of the crew at The Plaza/ Side bar are incredible and so accommodating - Had an event there last night and was everything we could have hoped for and more! They have a done fantastic job with the renovations/ decor. Delicious drinks- great popcorn. Could not recommend it enough!
The Plaza is a classic old style theatre. It has the same charm (or even more) every time I visit. Whether it is classics like the RHPS or Blues Brothers, or the newly remastered Stop Making Sense, The Plaza always delivers what you expect. There’s even a cocktail lounge attached to it now!
One of only 2 independent theatres left in the city. This little movie house does need a little tender love and care as it's fallen into some disrepair, however, they host great movies and events like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and other cult classics. One day, I'm going to own this gem.
Had so much fun watching The Rocky Horror Picture show. Went all out and bought the bag of props, which I recommend. Audience participation was great. Love the new reno to the Plaza . Love the old, worn out seats even though they are a tad uncomfortable. A great evening was had by all!
I went to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show. A fine cocktail bar is on the lefts when you walk in and goodies to the right (popcorn, chocolate bars, etc.). The atmosphere was sensational and the people were great. Prices were better than you'd expect so overall, you can't go wrong.
Great selection of movies. The theatre has not been renovated at all. The seats are still old and uncomfortable. The floor is sticky. There is a horrible smell of mold. And the popcorn is cold and salty. Very unfortunate because it’s a great concept for an independent theater.
Historic theatre with comfy seats and wonderful selection of current and classic films. Also available to book for community showings or festivals. With the trip into Kensington. Add on a coffee and dessert at Higher Ground across the street for a perfect outing on date night!
This place is old and is definitely showing it... by this metric, it doesn't deserve 5 stars; however... it's charming, historic, staffed by amazing people, has reasonable prices, and is a centerpiece of the community. This easily makes up for areas that it doesn't excel in!
I love this place and would give a five star if they would keep the temperature above 16 degrees!! Save on AC costs; the audience is freezing! Anyway… it is quaint, retro in all the right ways, beautiful and I love the people working there. Great location, decent parking.
I really enjoy coming here for a beer or a cocktail since their renovations! The space is so cute, they did such a good job on it! I love that their patio is practically right on the sidewalk! It gives you the best people watching. Also… John Candy is HILARIOUS. #iykyk
Love this theater! Only saw a couple of movies from this place cause I think they cater more to movies that aren't mainstream, which I love! Great and friendly staff as well. The cafè and food truck during the summer months truly make this theater a one of a kind.
Love the renovations! Great little side bar with fantastic happy hour deals, solid patio, good pizza from the food truck, reasonably priced movies with plenty of space. 100% recommend, even if not for a movie but for the drinks and snacks in the bar or outside!
One of the few authentic theatres left in this increasingly gentrified city. It's always a good experience. I highly recommend going to the Rocky Horror Picture Show around Halloween because it's a staple event to experience, and this is a good setting for it!
The Plaza theater never disappoints. Now, they offer the ability to come in, grab your theater popcorn, treats, or an alcoholic beverage (or non-alcoholic), then sit inside their bar or outside padio and visit with friends without having to take in a movie.
The new concession and side bar area are so charming and offer a nice selection of drinks etc to enjoy. The theater area itself is not renovated at all which I quite enjoy so you can still experience the classic grungy vibe while you watch your film!
Quaint movie theatre from the 60s Era. Seats are OK. I remember when I first moved to Calgary... you had to test the seats as some of them were broken. The owners have fixed up the place and it's nostalgic to see a movie here. Price for a
Charming place but has same line up for tickets and concessions, so have to stand in line for a while. Doors are heavy to open and seats become uncomfortable for long movies. Staff were friendly and provided ample butter on the popcorn.
Great old school theatre. This place is really an institution! Be sure to get in on the fun with cult classics such as Rocky Horror Picture Show playing around Halloween and Easter! Great fun to get involved and throw some rice around!
The movie we saw was awesome & not too loud. Seats were comfortable but no drink holders. The price was very inexpensive compared to other theatres & the only downer was the old musty smell of the place but it is a very old building.
Events from Rocky Horror Picture Show (props encouraged and for sale on-site) to comedy like Todd Barry & local performers. Classic old theatre. Nothing fancy, but an intimate and fun-spirited atmosphere... with really good popcorn.
It's an average theatre with not that great seats or sound effects or A/C or parking or any choice of snacks. Should Bollywood movies be screened in Cineplex then I would definitely prefer Cineplex when compared to Plaza theatre
Grease was great. The theatre design worked well for the performance. Need to put the front doors on springs or something as almost everyone failed to read the sign to close the door and left it open - not so nice in -30+.
Location is good. It's a good place for a change. Got a really good deal from Groupon. Only 2 theaters and they show good movies. Place is old tho and seats are not very comfortable. It's good for people who are not picky.
What a revamp! This is the coolest cinema in Calgary, hands-down. The recent renovations and expanded offering of food and drinks have been so thoughtfully done to reflect our great local scene. This place is a delight.
The plaza is a treasure. It's got such a wonderful old movie feel and the staff is absolutely great. The plaza holds so many wonderful events, Calgary is lucky it's still around and hopefully will be for years to come!
Gosh I wish someone had the resources to get this old Theater looking sparkling again. It would be great to see live acts on the stage as well. A great place for Saturday afternoon matinee catchup flicks. Good pricing.
My daughter took me here to watch "Everything Everywhere all at Once". I really love how they kept the nostalgic feel, and is actually quite cleaner and well kept compared to the big box theatres. I was impressed.
I haven't been to the Plaza since the changes. They have a really cute sidebar and fun drinks, which you can bring into the theatre. I love that we still have this special place Keep up the good work
Cozy, retro-feel space. They usually have interesting events or independent films playing so it’s a great way to support local! The Rocky Horror Picture Show viewing is an awesome time every Halloween season!!
Its like traveling back in time. You dont find quaint theatres like this anymore. Clean, small, no fancy chairs or snacks, but has a real charm to it. Friendly staff, simple set up & delicious popcorn.
Awesome little theatre. Nice to see some independent films instead of the big blockbusters playing at the major theatres. The renos look great and the option to have coffee & alcohol is a great idea!
A cozy little local theater has become even cozier with the renovations. The perfect place to hang out, have a drink, and eat some tasty local treats. Oh, and there's films too! What's not to love?
The interior design is charming, with a cute side bar. The bartender made delicious mocktails for us. Original prints from photographer Malick Sidibé are prominently displayed which blew my mind.
This historic theatre is the oldest in Calgary. Albeit the design is quite old, it could have a few renovations with the seats and such. I love it here because they show celluloid films yearly.
Love that this place allows bookings for random movies in a really central location. Its a really old dated threatre that has great ambiance and stellar popcorn. Parking is always a challenge.
Very cute fun place to go with friends or a cute lil date night. Like the movies they feature and good snacks, a bit more pricy but worth it when you're supporting local and not big cineplex
One of the coolest spaces in Calgary. Old school theatre with best curated movies. I will not change this place for 1000 years with those sterile so called modern theatres in the burbs. Ha!
The new renovations are amazing and love that the owners kept some classic vibes while adding their own touches. The cocktails in the bar they added were amazing. Can't wait to come back.
Plaza is an awesome little theatre with a low key atmosphere, great spot to grab a drink too. We always try to make it to Rocky Horror for the annual Halloween showing which is a riot.
Great private theatre. I love watching movies/film festivals here. Very authentic. Seats are often worse for wear, so sometimes you have to move if your first choice seats are broken.
Amazing atmosphere + only place to see a lot of independent/artsy movies. But they also do play a few more mainstream movies if you're interested. Thank you for existing ❤️ …
It's a small older theater but that's part of the charm. The location is great and the staff are super friendly. Shows a wider variety of movies that may not have wider distribution.
So much character. Friendly staff. Visited tonight for the screening of "Tough Guy" the story of Bob Probert. Fantastic job on the documentary. Great venue for the screening. , …
Amazing experience! They have built an awesome cocktail bar in the theatre. Can bring your drinks in and the popcorn is better than ever. Highly recommend checking out a movie here.
Had a great time at the movies tonight! So Glad we have the Plaza back. There is a lot more to enjoy besides the movie now. Nicely done. Thanks for bringing the Plaza back to life!
We had our daughter’s birthday party here. The theatre looks amazing, the booking process was simple and the staff on the day of were incredibly kind and patient. Thanks so much!
Love the new renovations and vibe of this old Calgary movie theatre. Support local cinema and go here. It's super awesome - cozy bar seating, grab a drink and great popcorn!
Always loved this theatre and the staff are really great. The chairs aren’t most comfy but it worth checking out for a old school style movie theatre and some tasty popcorn.
I love the events they have there! super old style classic theater, you feel like your in the 50's. II love it. Late Night at the Plaza is one of the funnest events in town!
Good location. Walking distance in downtown. But bad seating comfort and bad audio and visual treat might drag down the excitement of the location of this legendary theater.
Great afternoon break from the sun. I saw Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis" - There were only a few people so I hope as the Autumn comes that more folks come to the renovated theatre!
A classic theater, of which there are too few left. Love the vibe and the staff. The speckled screen is a bit of a distraction, but doesn't take away from the experience.
Friendly staff, adorable vintage vibe, local craft beers, delicious popcorn. GO HERE for rocky horror picture show at Halloween. Support local small business ❤️✨ …
A true fun small town theater, cinema treat! The popcorn is made with Heroin, it's not but maybe the butter....aaaand you can have a beer while watching frozen …
This theatre is as classic as it gets. The popcorn is the best, the seats are comfy and the vibe is electric. If you've never been here, you're surely missing out!
The movies are good, as is the food, but the customer service is pessimistic, it seems to be as if you were having things rubbed off. I honestly wouldn't go back
Plaza is a very cute indie theatre. Nice experience. Love that you can bring in beers, ciders and wine into the theatre. Great work curating what movies to show
Had a great fun time volunteering for the FairyTales Film Festival held at this plaza for the past 3 years. Hopefully there is a lot more to come in the future.
It has been a really long time since I have been back at the Plaza Theatre. Thank you for bringing this landmark back to life. OMG! Real butter on the popcorn!!
Great quaint little theatre with a clear history of providing a personal experience! A definite must go to for a look back in time and to enjoy a great movie.
Old school movie theatre offering licensed events that feature locally produced films. I've seen Rocky Horror here a number of times and it's always a blast!
Such a great theatre! Love the space. Would be helpful for the sandwiche board to post sold out movies ... the little paper sign on the door doesn't cut it.
Very retro theatre! Staff is friendly, seats are okay, BUT every time we went the popcorn got worse. It’s either too salty, too soggy or too stale.
Great theatre, has a classic feel to it. Very supportive of local and foreign films and film fests. Seen lots of great films here over the years!
Fun movies but very uncomfortable seats. They hold great screenings here. Saw Die-hard last night here and the rum and egg nog was excellent.
Classic theatre, great place for midnight showings, cult hits, indie films. Decent popcorn, nice staff, cool bathrooms if you can find them!
So happy there are still theatres that are open to showing the Rocky Horror and have the audience participate! Thank you for a great night!
Smells like mold but the charm and character of this theatre is surpassed by none. Check out the rocky horror picture show every Halloween.
Not organized the best way, staff didn't communicate when people go in to the theater. Small location so have to wait in the entrance way.
