"Thank you so much for your excellent customer service this afternoon"
Beautiful old art deco cinema with history. Opened as Princess Theatre in 1925, then remodelled art deco in 1940 as the Ozone. Bought by Hoyts Theatres in 1952. Sold to Burnside Council in 1965 and operated from 1972 as The Chelsea by Wallis Theatres. Attempts to add screens to make cinema more viable as a small multiplex, failed. After a controversial attempt to sell, the Council inexplicably took the cinema back from Wallis and leased it to Republic Pictures, who renamed it The Regal. In 2018 the Council took it back from Republic and is now operating it as a council facility. My experience is of extremely small audiences, which does not bode well for the cinema's future unless sold to a genuine cinema chain operator who can add screens, as single cinemas are not viable in the 21st century, even at the very competitive ticket prices charged by council. Council also runs special live events, including popular and classical orchestracl concerts, as did Republic and Wallis. Council have done a good job in lifting the quality of the cinema, which was neglected by the previous the. Excellent refurbished toilets. Very clean cinema.
Originally built for the National Picture Theatre chain in 1925, the theatre has been called the Princess Theatre, the Ozone, the Chelsea and now the Regal Theatre. After National Theatres went into liquidation, it was purchased by the Waterman family, then sold to Hoyts, then was about to be demolished, was purchased by the Burnside Council, leased to Wallis theatre, and finally was included in the South Australia Heritage Register in 1983. This Art Deco style theatre and cinema is absolutely beautiful. The seats are comfortable and placed strategically for screen viewing. I watched Black Widow at this theatre from the first row of the balcony and absolutely enjoyed the venue and the audio-visual experience. The ticket was $10 (July 2021). The staff at the ticket and food counter were very courteous, pleasant and friendly. The theatre has its own carpark at the back.
A great little Cinema which (in a good way) seems to have had minimal work done to it. One screen, two floors as they always used to be. I'm new to the area so I can't speak to it's history or what it was like before this last refurbishment, which I presume has been done recently... But this is a little gem in the neighborhood that I hope is utilised enough to keep it stainable. Granted it's not got Dolby Atmos or recliner chairs, but it's perfectly comfortable and it does have that sense of space and ambience that multiplex cinemas normally lack. Plus it's local and council owned, so it's very much community social club and way better a functioning traditional cinema than derelict or another appointment block. Use it so you don't loose it locals, if you've not already been - you'll love it!
Absolutely beautiful old theatre. Comfy seats and 10/10 service by the lovely worker. She made our evening so much better with her thoughtfulness. It's a pity the theatre doesn't get more people attending it. My mum and I watched an old classic made into a musical cinema production- West Side Story. Thank you so much lovely lady for allowing my mum and I to have our dinner in the theatre. We didn't have time to eat it before the movie started. You truly are a valuable part of our experience at the Regal theatre. Ps I wish I knew her name but it was on 6th April at 5.30pm. Please thank her for us.
Thank you so much for your excellent customer service this afternoon. I had my daughters 14th birthday party with 10 young ladies invited, it’s was pouring down outside so we couldn’t go to the park across the road for cake cutting. The lovely gentleman behind the counter was just amazing, he ran around and got me a table and tablecloth for the cake so we could sing happy birthday in the foyer. I am so grateful for your thoughtfulness, thank you so much for saving the day ❤️
I went there to see Rhonda Burchmore presented by Kathryn McGowan PR. The Theatre is beautiful inside and out. Rhonda Burchmore is the ultimate Australian entertainer. The setting was delightful, the theatre provided for a very intimate experience with Rhonda. Rhonda mixed good stories of her life in showbusiness with just the right mix of humour and great songs with a superb 3 piece band. The acoustics were second to none. The Regal Theatre is something to be proud of.
Quite enjoyed the Founder and good service from young Molly. Unfortunately later the same day the good vibe was missing and I found Light Between Oceans a bit draining. Loved the fine Spirit of the female lead, but not the man she hooked up with. Felt he had a serious issue with depression, but I didn't hang around to find out. Exited after about 25 minutes.
We went to see Tina simply the best. We sat in stalls so it was very easy to access with a walker. You would have a great view from any seat in the theatre! The show was absolutely fantastic and if you closed your eyes you would think it was Tina herself. Great prices too. Will definitely go back there for another show organised by Marcus Hamence!
I took my disabled son and mother in law to see "Ladies in black". Tickets were only $10 each, for everyone! The cinema has reasonable parking, although not a LOT of parks (behind the cinema). It has wheelchair accessible parking, toilet and entrance and is a comfortable cinema to sit and watch a movie in and I highly recommend it!
An absolute gem of a theatre! Beautiful to see life being given to an old theatre with an impeccable movie experience! Fantastic candy bar downstairs with great prices and a very friendly attendant, going above and beyond! The place reminds you of the old world charm and is a much better experience than VMAX or it’s kinds.
Firstly the show we saw was great, Marina Prior, what a magnificent voice. The show was fantastic. The theater on the other hand, not so great. We purchased caberet style table seats. Well we were squashed in like sardines. Social distancing, what's that. Not impressed. Drinks available left lots of room for improvement.
This could be the most gorgeous movie theatre in SA. Tickets are very reasonably priced, there is a selection of nibbles, staff are friendly and welcome, there is a wine bar and resturant (Hula Hoop), and if that isn't enough the theatre is beautiful both inside and out. It makes going to see a movie a 'night out'.
Lovely theatre. Great atmosphere and very clean. Comfortable seats and kind male receptionist letting people in, when checking tickets. I went to the Burt Bacharach show three weeks ago. Bus across the road going to city was also very handy, as it was raining on that day. Definitely be using this theatre often.
Use to be the Chelsea theatre nearly one hundred yrs old still magnificent, seats could be improved. Used for fun raising so that's a bonus. Watched the film Yesterday very very enjoyable. I was there to help my grandsons team raise money for under fourteen boys to go to Ballarat. Lovely time had by all.
Took my son to the Trak; he had no idea the theatre existed. Comfy seats, small cosy theatre, perfect temperature as it was hot outside, excellent customer service. Highly recommend rather than going to a Corporate owned one; cost was lower and no hassle with parking. Fruchocs yummo.
The theatre has been completely refurbished. New seats, but a good old fashioned feel. You are treated like a human being, not just another customer. Never crowded, great selection of movies. My favourite cinema - in fact, my only cinema. Haven't been to another one in years.
Local cinema that's been modernised with comfortable seating. Sound and picture quality is good. Other events such as concerts also happen here. Small snack bar in the foyer. Staff member was friendly and chatty. Free and easy parking out the back when attendance is small.
Been there a few times over many years, it's one of Adelaide's treasures that mustn't be lost. A lovely old art deco cinema, not a shoebox with curtains, nor a black hole. And with comfy seats, where your knees aren't jammed into the seat in front of you.
Such a beautiful, grand old theatre. I was fortunate enough to visit the Regal and enjoyed every part of the experience. Very comfy seats too, which can be an area of concern for older theatres! I suggest you catch a film there if you get a chance.
Ride like a Girl. Fabulous movie showing how hard it is for women to get past the barriers put up by men. Literally in this movie. The theatre itself is amazing and if you are lucky enough to get there take the time to absorb the architecture.
Great venue with a casual atmosphere that appealed to all my clients. The cost was also well within the budget, and with a large capacity, everyone had room to spread out. Can't speak highly enough of the Regal in relation to value for money.
Finally restored to its former glory, the Regal has all of the charm and character of its era. Service has similarly improved since the recent refurbishment and the new seats hug you while you watch. A great place to go to the cinema.
Lovely little suburban theatre & after the renovation even better with really comfy seats. Pity they forgot to renovate the toilets which are still stuck in the last century. Please can you finish the job by upgrading the loos.
Female with blonde hair greeted me this morning, she was very pleasant on a public holiday Monday. I was able to use my my voucher this morning. Very much appreciate such great service & I'll definitely return. Thankyou
Old world charm. Staff friendly. Waterlilies by Monet very interesting and smart in itself. And while you're there, try Sam's salted caramel popcorn. Made locally with quality ingredients. It will be my downfall …
Used to love this cinema. Was great to take kids along and to watch other movies in the old style. Since new owners however it doesnt show some movies. Also inconvenient times or no consistency with times or dates.
We wanted to try a new theatre and came here. Fantastic environment. Different world experience. My only gripe - no popcorn. I'm a popcorn and movie person, so felt a little odd. otherwise, everything was great.
The best cinema in Adelaide. It has far more character than any of the cine-plex cinemas. A large screen and good sound system make it a great place to watch movies. Only $10 admission is a real bonus.
Beautiful theatre to see a movie in, I can see how it would be a great venue for musical concerts too, great space and nice greenery surrounding the theatre. Car park area behind, was very convenient.
Always love going to the Regal Theatre, good ticket prices, old world charm decor with state of the art digital audio quality. Comfortable seats, Good parking rear of premises. Well worth it …
I always love returning to the Regal Theatre to watch movies...this classic Art Deco building has alot of good memories for me when I used to watch movies with my family growing up in the 1960's.
Had my son’s graduation here and was pleasantly surprised with the setup. Seating upstairs and down was really comfortable and well-spaced. Well maintained inside and out. Great space for events.
Beautiful cinema with cheap tickets and screenings. The dialogue is a bit low, unable to hear voice when watching. A very quiet cinema with very little people, not a nice atmosphere.
Lovely old timey feel, like stepping back in time, great atmosphere with good range of films. Good selection in snack bar. Short walk to marryatville pub and Hula Hoop next door :)
Small area for concerts. Pity some self obsessed people chose to dance in the centre isle - blocking the view of others, instead of going either side isle to dance like others.
Saw a Fringe show. Seating nice, staff lovely. Alcohol, a choc top & a show + what more could you want? Easy parking in the side street or behind the park opposite the Theatre
Lovely historic theatre that has been refurbished. The seats are a bit low down and squishy but much more modern and clean since the update. Great for special functions.
Very nice staff. Comfy and cosy atmosphere. Comfy seats. If not many people in theatre the AC may not be cool enough - but that's the only not-positive experience I had.
Very lovely art deco building with new refurbished seats. Even in covid times they hosted a charity event for domestic violence survivors. Long live community theatres.
Good to have this historic space. Good ticket deals. No liquor license - check if the next-door bar is open. Some special shows and fundraisers have a liquid license.
To see life breathed into an old building like Markus and his team do is wonderful. You can guarantee quality, fun and warm hospitality, whatever you're coming to see
Great place to see a movie. Good sized screen. Authentic retro feel. Like most older theaters, there's not much slope in the floor so don't sit behind someone tall.
The Caberet seating leaves you with nowhere to dance. I was dancing in the aisle and was asked to sit down. For concerts like Tina you need the dance floor..
A lovely old fashioned theatre that is seldom busy on weekdays. I enjoy coming to the matinees as its usually very quiet. Sometimes Im the only patron!
This cinema makes me feel like royalty. There's only one cinema, but it's very big and royal-like. There is a grand staircase that I enjoy walking on.
Beautiful grand old theatre... Deep sounds so good that you could feel it through the chairs at times... shame not many people going there to enjoy it
We saw a really nice movie at the Regal but the Regal itself is a gorgeous classic movie theater itself that with its style added to that experience.
A beautiful old theatre. Renowned for its ability to hold fund-raisers for charities. Have been to quite a few over the years, always very enjoyable
Went to see Aretha Franklin tribute. AWESOME. Great theatre air condconditioning, comfortable seating, refreshments and nice bathrooms. …
Burnside council have given the interior a much needed facelift, with new carpets and re-upholstering the seats. Made the visit more enjoyable
A lasting favourite of ours, the finish and the decor is worth the visit on its own. The movie was also a wonderful treat: A man called Otto.
A large, warm, comfortable theatre with a range of pre or post film treats. The vision and sound made Downton Abbey a great experience.
Lovely old theatre restored with care, certainly retains its old charm and was very comfortable when we went to see ride like a girl.
Beautiful old theatre, comfortable and airy. My favourite spot for taking in a movie ... great prices, lovely staff, nice snacks.
Well done to the Burnside Council for giving her a makeover. She looks amazing. What a beautiful place to watch a live show.
Great revamped theatre, gives nostalgic feeling of watching movie in olden days, before extra luxurious theatres took over
Very regal, much theatre, staff are very welcoming the space has been beautifully renovated and happy to see a lovely show
Lovely little theatre with great live entertainment (Carpenters from Kempsey). We were upstairs and had a perfect view.
The Regal Theatre is a very beautiful THEATRE. COMFY SEATS. Fantastic drinks counter in front row of the stalls.
Lovely art-deco theatre glad no one has knocked it down! Great antique location with all the expected mod-cons.
Stunning theatre, plays a variety of new movies and artsy movies. Cheap tickets and classic candy bar options.
Love this venue - comfortable chairs, nice ventilation in the venue and great staff. Always enjoy being there.
Beautiful art déco theatre with great acoustics. Friendly staff, especially Markus who is the host/promoter.
Newly Refurbished Cinema which has preserved the vintage elegance. Good video, sound and comfortable seats.
Sweet theater with a great atmosphere. The architecture is beautiful and the balcony seats are nice.
I love this theatre because it is one of the few examples of Art Deco architecture left in Adelaide
Lovely decor. Comfortable and pacious seating. Also able to enjoy refreshments in the audience.
I went to see Abbasolutely fabulous with Rhonda Birchmore on Saturday. It was a great show.
Very good night, great show with Rhonda Birchmore " ABBA Show. Great venue good acoustics.
I had a great night out watching Alice Cooper show. It's a great venue, great atmosphere.
I love this cinema but please put a movie on that the general public would like to see
New seats comfortable. Love the old fashioned cinema atmosphere. Great ticket prices.
Awesome, beautiful theatre, very comfortable and very easy to see the stage...
Classic Art Deco theatre, a beautiful spot for a film or school graduation .
First time at this Theatre, absolutely beautiful, and intimate Theatre.
Great theatre. Old school but a fantastic atmosphere and a great vibe.
Love this cinema but the new seats are not comfortable at all.
Always has been a great atmosphere. Good that it is surviving
Beautiful theatre, comfortable chairs though a little tight
Good art deco theatre.,.toilets could use some attention.
Always a perfect place to go! And staff Always polite..
Gorgeous live theatre venue. Spacious seating.
Beautiful theatre, fantastic atmosphere
Local cinema, a bit old but warm.
