I walked around part of this cemetery on Christmas Eve. HISTORY Field of Mars cemetery previously known as the Field of Mars Common located in Ryde it covers 17 hectares of land the cemetery offers a range of burial and cremation options. The Field of Mars cemetery was proclaimed on 3rd December 1887 it's name was given by Governor Phillip when he granted land to 8 first fleet Mariners in 1792. It's meaning is believed to be a reference to the Roman god of War Mars. When the common was privatised 85 acres, 2 roads and 28 perches were set aside as a cemetery most of that was later converted into the Field of Mars Flora and Fauna Reserve in 1979. The inscription count of 45468 but with such a large number of mausoleums it's hard to calculate the exact number of graves.
Field of Mars is a cemetary in Ryde surrounded by residential housing. It is quite a large cemetary. Main general entry is from Quarry Rd however there is another entry also so check Google maps. Only open specific hours of the day. A Chapel is on the grounds. There is limited Parking on the grounds so check the web page for any other advice. ©️ #Wozzellocalguide #wozz #wozzel Photographer 2021. A free review with no charge.
Field of Mars is an older cemetery which makes it for a very interesting walk or drive through. The roads are very narrow so you have to take it a little more easy as a lot of people park on the side so sometimes it’s a little hard to pass by. There are many religions and it has many cultures. Very peaceful. Please be aware that the hours posted are not correct. I’ve added a photo of the opening and closing times.
Went on Father’s Day to visit my grandfathers grave with the family. Lawns are poorly mowed, bags or rubbish and money trees left scattered after being ripped out of the ground and a lovely animal corpse in front of a poorly cared for grave. Field of Mars staff truly care for your family’s resting place.
Friendly staff, however once you pay your money, don't expect your plaque to be ready for several months regardless what they promise you. I have been following up my mother's plaque for months constantly and an excuse is always told. Not impressed at all!!!
My grandparents as well as several other relatives are buried here. A lovely cemetery that maintains its graves well as well as documents them well online, complete with many photos.
The diversity of ethnicity, religion, experiences and generations speaks to the history of Australia.
Hopefully I found my sister. Marilyn May Porter in this un marked grave....
Peaceful cemetery, though the grass sometimes is left to grow too high...
Teaming with history of Sydney's past good for a walk through
