Whether you enter the station from the National Portrait Gallery or the Capitol One Arena you will find yourself immersed in a beautiful intersection of form and function. Elongated escalators quickly route you into an underground tube wrapped in waffle-like concrete cocoon. If you have the proper credentials, the gates will will allow you to immediately pass onto the lower levels, but do not worry if you do not, electronic sentries are standing by to help you gain access. At the lower level you will stand upon miles of hexagonal tiles tinted in various shade of burnt orange much like the many legends who have travelled Metro before you. Hundreds of floor lights line the tracks, to amplify the danger of the rails and celebrate the arrival of each train with a luminous dance of welcoming. With the arrival of each train the ceiling darkens to show respect to the magnificent Kawasaki machine that lies below. Each train welcomes you with open doors, but do not mistake it's kindness for casualness. When the time comes for onward motion the doors will clamp upon anything or anyone that stands in its way. As each train leaves so does the excitement and anticipation that came with it's arrival. The gods signify thier approval with a strong gust of wind that wooshes across the platform, and the ceiling illuminates in a sign of respect to departing train.
Don't bet on catching the last trains. I work as a bartender and I get out of work late. It's happened twice where I would run to catch the last train with only 7 minutes left until it's arrival/departure and the gates to the entrance are closed on both H and F St sides AND the elevator on 7 St is inoperable. TWICE. I've used Metro for as long as I've been here which is about 7 years and I've caught last trains with no problem from many stations. My problem with this particular station is that these MFs know there are workers in the area that need to catch that last train and can't afford $40-$50 for a one-way Uber/Lyft on a Friday or Saturday night. It reflects laziness, incompetence, and a blatant disregard of the community this station serves on behalf of WMATA.
Had trouble exiting the terminal with my partner. We’re both new to D.C. We accidentally used the wrong card to exit and only after our visible confusion and turmoil, the undercover officer stops us. We were spoken over, talked down to, and interrogated with toxic virility and downright disrespect. It was at 3:24 pm. The cop was wearing a green zip down sweater and had dark brown hair. We tried many times to calmly address our mistake but to no avail. Wish I could say anything but what I have to say: the undercover officer here is useless and rude. Don’t ask for help, he’ll just stop you when you’re visibly trying to find a solution. Disgusted.
My son got motion sickness from the first train ride and threw up after we got off. Poor guy was trying to hold it in his hand and not get it on the ground. I immediately went to get help and a lady police officer must have saw it in my face as she quickly came over to me. I wish I'd gotten her name but she had short natural curly hair and beautiful hazel eyes. She helped us get him cleaned up and made sure he was okay. Wonderful customer service! Every other worker was also so very helpful as the metro is very confusing to someone that's never used it! Thank you for helping make our trip to DC so wonderful!
The station is always crowded and also rather dimly lit. Three station entrances: 7/H (at the front of northbound Green/Yellow trains), 7/F (at the center, best entrance into Verizon), and 9/G (at the front of westbound Red Line trains; also very close to Metro Center for transfers to Blue/Orange/Silver). Keep in mind that trains pull all the way up to the front of the tunnel. So if you're riding Red: 6-car westbound trains get *packed* in that last car because everyone tends to wait at the east end of the tunnels (where the two tunnels intersect). So move westward to get away from the crowds!
There is usually homeless people swarming at the area outside metro entrance/exit bothering people and panhandling. They pee anywhere they wanted to, especially at metro entrance area and inside it. It always smell strongly of urine and is not sanitary. Groups of police scattered at entrance area were always chatting and laughing among each others, and not doing their duty to move homeless away from the metro area so customers will not be bothered, and stop them from peeing at this area. Gross. I will use Metro station instead of Gallery Place station from now on.
Gallery Place Chinatown Metro Station in Washington DC services Red Line, Green Line, and Yellow Line trains and services the National Mall, Capital One Arena, and many, many more commercial and tourist assets in central DC. The only other station that covers intersects these three lines is Fort Totten. Expect heavy usage during rush hour times, and if you are a tourist try to avoid the system at this time to help commuters who may have little time to give help when they might otherwise be disposed to.
The red line gets ridiculously crowded weekday mornings! Consider taking a taxi or bus from Chinatown if you can. The arriving trains are so packed that by the time all the people have left the car, only 3 or 4 of the dozens waiting can board. Meanwhile, the platforms become dangerously overcrowded from those waiting for the next train, more arriving from the green & yellow lines and those trying to exit the platform. It's almost impossible to move.
This is a heavily used station in the district. There are three entrances/exits for the station. The first is on the corner of 7th St and H St (under the At&t store) which is closest to Chinatown and usually has a group of homeless individuals nearby. The second is on the corner of 7th St and F St under the Capital One Arena, next to Vida Fitness. The third is on the corner 9th St and G St next to the National Portrait Gallery.
This station is very convenient when considering location and traveling to and from work... however the smell lately is horrendous... even thru the mask it’s smells terrible like bowels and old cigars... and it’s needs to be cleaned very few places to sit and they are alway filthy and nasty... I won’t even speak about the floors and all the trash on the tracks... these matters need to be addressed seriously
one of the oldest Metro stations. transfer spot for the red, green, & yellow lines. plenty of entrances in some of the busiest streets in DC. simple layout to find which train you need to transfer to as well. during rush hour, all platforms will be CROWDED. station could also be much cleaner as well. there's lots of shenanigans going on and the surrounding area could be much better
It's a transfer spot for Green, Red and Yellow lines. Lots of reading and getting use to after about the 15th time you should be good on getting to where you need to be without missing the train and exit on the right side of the station. Lots of panhandlers hang around the entrance/ exit points, smells very based on how hot and humid it is.
If you plan on getting to Chinatown, this is your station. This transit hub is composed by two different sets of platforms. You have the red line and another station with the green and the yellow. For the most part it is clean and safe. However during rush hour it can get very busy, so if it is not a most avoid it when it gets too busy.
Red! Yellow! Green! One of the best metro stations in DC. Close to Mall, so use this stop to avoid the hordes of tourists at the Smithsonian metro (see also: Archives, L'Enfant). But, as much as humanly possible, don't use this station when a Caps game is about to start or just ending. It's a zoo of B&T.
The signage about exits is impossible!! I have lived in this city my entire life and I can never ever go out the correct exit at Chinatown. It's truly unbelievable. I even looked for additional information on the wmata website! The signs are so confusing. Please fix them, this is impossible!
This is a good metro station with connectivity to Red, Green, and Yellow Lines. Also has a few entrances from nearby local streets. But cruising over from Red to other likes does take a while especially during rush hour. Also the station gets crowded making it hard to get to your train.
This station is very convenient to Chinatown and the Capital One Area. This is a transfer station for the red, yellow and green metrorail lines. The signs make it easy to navigate, with the yellow and green lines on the lower level. You can easily get to MD and VA from this station.
Me and my group had quite the trouble trying to reload our cards to get home. Luckily the station manager (Veronica B was her name I believe???) was an angel sent from above. She was very helpful and very kind to us on our second ever metro experience. She deserves a raise.
On 7th Street on the right at the McDonald's 1/2 block past the convention Center USED TO BE a HUGE open air drug market. But it was also filled with life. There were places to eat and to chat. Covid killed the businesses. I hope life returns but without the drugs
Gallery Place Chinatown is a good Metro stop -- very convenient exits to a few different spots in Chinatown, generally clean, and a good transfer point. Great for heading to or from the Verizon Center, with plenty of room for people coming out of concerts.
Unfriendly staff in the kiosk! Unpleasant gathering spot for smokers, week smokers, stupid young guys, and homeless people. Sometimes one can’t cross the sidewalk without pumping into a couple of people. Yellow line schedule is almost always unavailable.
3 different train lines stop at this station and if your looking for a station in chinatown then this is your station. Access to the Capital One Arena and many shops in the area. This station is very old but very convenient.
Well, there are 2 exists from this station. 1 - to the Chinatown, which I don’t recommend AND 2 - to the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture (9 St), which is nice and defiantly recommended.
Great time for all, at the Chinese New Year event in Chinatown. Parade and firecracker display brought out dragons, drums, and traditional dress as they celebrated the year of the pig.
There are four lines that come in so I love this place but it does have some serious problems! One, the people are horrible. It's a heckic place that should be avoided at all costs!
Station itself is fine but the entrance/exit areas are dirty, smell of urine, are always surrounded by people harassing you for money while the police stand around and do nothing.
The restrooms are locked and the lady was rude, and wouldn't answer the request politely. No wonder the ridership is going down. The quality and customer service is horrible.
Very conveniently located. Be alert at all times at Gallery Place station, it’s one of the more dangerous in the metro system. Theft and assault are very common.
A lot of drunks, cigarette smokers and loiterers at this location, it's sad. The 7th Street exit is not family friendly! Wish this had a zero star option.
This is a subway stop. What can I say? If you get in the wrong way you may find yourself walking for a while just to get to the train going the other way.
Well-situated subway station, but can feel rundown in places, maybe because of heavy use. Transfer was easy and convenient. No restrooms.
Normal Metro station, regular trains. Make sure to go near the exit to Chinatown and see the arch. Lots of restaurants of all kinds.
Got attacked by a group of homeless people as I left there last night-i'd be very vigilant if you leave this station at night
The metro station itself is fine. However, there are always homeless people outside and others singing at very high volumes.
You can easily get to the arena or the national galleries at this stop. Lots of food choices at all price points around too.
Muy bonito muchos lugares para comer hay museos hay cine y puedes ver en vivo partidos de baloncesto en el capital 1 arena
That's where I take my train every morning. It is good but maybe they might consider having lines working 24h/24
It's not safe at night. Had to walk away from the bus stop due to men arguing and saying someone had a gun.
Fresh station! My family often go to this station, and it's convenient with Chinese restaurants nearby.
The machine for insert money that work I put $10and nobody at station metro to help me
Unbearable when Verizon Center has an event. Never enough room when moving around.
A convenient transfer station that happens to be hot, stuffy, and smell like pee.
While its a convient stop, it's one of the dirtiest metro stations I've been in.
A terrific Station to transfer to the Greenline and Yellowline for commuters.
Red, yellow, and green trains here. The signs are confusing, pay attention!
If there is a Hell it's probably a lot like the Gallery Place Metro Station
Panhandlers and lowlifes hang around this station at all hours. Not clean
DC Metro needs new administration!!! They need to learn from Europe...
It was a fun day of universal expression. A true conversation piece.
For me, it is a great please to pick up the green line to head home.
Good location but wreaks of urine and smoking (tobacco and pot).
Metro Stations can be reviewed! and this is one of my favorites.
Friday, metro is working still to 1:20 am from saturday!!
Chinatown entrance full of lowlifes and thugs, not safe.
Most unhygienic and unsafe metro station I have seen!
The metro managers were really nice to the customer.
There are always smokers loitering around this stop.
Just rode the subway to the my stop near location.
Chinatown is the most Interesting thing in DC.
Es una estación amplia, limpia y agradable.
Great when it's not smoking or on fire!
Typical metro station. Clean and fast.
Easy to navigate, signs well posted.
Multi-lines accessible metro station
Very decent experience on the Metro
