"The Henson is a fantastic dog park, jogging spot and oval to enjoy"
The Henson Park Hotel has had a major makeover. Don't be fooled by the exterior, which has hardly been touched from it's original facade and still screams "old TAB/men's/sports pub". If you walk past all the original pub-space and out into the new section, you will be pleasantly surprised. The back area has been transformed into a large open space with a "shabby chic" feel. Very trendy. The menu has also had a major revision and now serves "posh pub grub" with delicious salad, sandwiches, steaks etc. The outdoor area is especially appealing on a hot night or balmy summers day. The Henson is popular with all walks of life and is one of the few places that is kid friendly, with a play area out back to keep them entertained. You can even bring your dog along to the outdoor garden. The word is out, so be prepared to wait for a table.
I love going to Henson Park it's one of my favorite places to watch a game of Rugby League. For people who haven't been before I recommend going as it gives you a view into what Rugby League used to be like. Food and drink at Henson Park is cheap compared to NRL level stadiums, last time I went there I think I paid $2-3 for a steak sandwich and a can of VB was $6. Views at Henson Park are quite good, most people sit on the hill or the grandstand. I'd recommend travelling by bus would be the best option to get there, the 428 takes you down Addison Road in Marrickville and drops you off at the corner of Illawarra Road which you walk up to get to the ground. There is also a few places to drink before and after the game such as The Henson Park hotel and the Tennis club behind the ground.
Probably the best service I've had in years. Obviously great staff. I had a terrific meal, ( duck cottage pie, and the bread and butter pudding for dessert ) . Awesome!! So good I stuffed my self totally. Fairly lively atmosphere that caters for the kids well with a special area out the back of beer garden. It was very refreshing to see a pub that doesn't have the dreaded pokies. I just have to repeat what I mentioned above. The service from the staff was top notch. I am not a local, and I felt very welcome. Smiles all round.
I love this park. There is a sports oval in the middle, a walking path around it, and then sloping grassy areas from the carpark around to the sports stands. The grassy slopes are an offleash dog park area. All the dogs there are, more often than not, well behaved. The owners are relaxed and responsible for their dogs, and I've actually made a number of friends here. The only criticism I'd have is that there isn't always easily accessible bathrooms, but there's an awesome pub down the road so it's not a big hassle.
The Henson is a fantastic dog park, jogging spot and oval to enjoy. Bring a blanket if you want to sit down, there are doggy droppings around! Parking is available but best you get there early if a game is on. There are bubble stations to give your poochy a drink too. Bins also on the premise to drop your rubbish. Lovely community here and great walking spot or a work out space. I grew up here with my school sports carnivals and have many great memories at the Henson. Xxx
Great park, big wide green space for dogs, poo bags, and toilets. Update: council have installed a new bubbler with a little water bowl at the bottom for dogs, grass was recently patched up and new trees put in, looks great! Council don't always.open the toilets and no dedicated water bowl for dogs. Locals put bowls by the bubblers but someone keeps nicking them. Bubbler in the middle of the park is broken for who knows how many years now.
Lovely old suburban oval, of which there are now few remaining in Sydney. You can almost hear the crowd cheering for the old Bluebags as you enter. The grandstand is named after King George V, so its clearly no spring chicken. Well groomed & clean, its a great place to walk the dog and there are top notch cafes closeby if you need coffee. Perhaps a few trees around the top would give it some shade on hot days......
The home ground of the Newtown Jets. Not wheelchair friendly, especially the Jetset Lounge, but we make a go of it. The team have great fans and the atmosphere is so positive. If you park inside, think about whether you’re blocking other cars in. The canteen sells beer, wine, soft drinks, meat pies, sausage and steak sandwiches, chips and lollies.
Do yourself a favor and go to Henson Park and watch the footy. An excellent suburban ground with a massive hill area for watching the game or for children to play. King George V grandstand is a good place to watch the games too. Food and drinks are well priced eg $5 for a steak sandwich . Toilet facilities are available
A lovely park where you will see the occasional runner. It's a good place for a walk and also a bonus if you love dogs as there are plenty of dog owners that let their dogs roam free here. This place is also used for many sports and it's possible that you can catch a glimpse of them in a game or in training.
Absolutely love this ground. If I lived closer I would go every week. It has the best atmosphere, everyone is always happy, dogs are loving being out with the family and although I'm slightly disabled, it's great to sit there on the hill like I did às a kid with my Dad. SIMPLY THE BEST
This is a good old local football ground in the Newtown Jets went there on a gala day all the craft beer companies from around the area with there and it was absolutely packed they only thing is the Bulldogs lost at the Jets they had jumping castles for the kids and food stalls as well
Had a great time here watching the AFLW! There were loads of food and drink stands (but no BYO) on game day, and the park banks around the field so you can sit on a raised hill to watch the game. Not a great angle to watch at, but the price more than made up for it!
Henson Park has many vantage points to watch the local attractions but few with shade. The blow of watching the Sydney Swans Ladies lose to Hawthorne was softened by the beverages supplied by various craft beer tents along the southern hill. Bring your own seating.
Doesn't have any linemarking on the car park which is confusing. Would suggest Inner West Council construct an overhead bridge to facilitate students from Marrickville High School to use Henson Park for health and sports lessons, events and activities.
Great ground to watch the mighty jets play. Easy enough to get to. Great beer selections (and in cans still) and good old fashion sausage sandwiches both at reasonable prices. Plenty of room for kids to rum around. During the week it's a public park
Always a fun day out at Henson Park — Local footy, great atmosphere, affordable, laidback and unpretentious (also dog-friendly ) (beer selection / sponsor needs improvement— It used to be Young Henry’s but now it’s Philter ) …
If I could vote with more than 5 stars I would give this park 8,972 stars! It's a bloody nice park I'll tell you that for a quid. Sitting on the hill can give you piles and eye strain from the sun so I recommend a picnic rug and 2 sun glasses.
Henson Park is a popular community location well-known in the area for being an amazing social dog park. I often see large groups of dogs running and interacting on the hills surrounding the oval around sunset, the perfect location for dogs
Old school oval where you can sit on the grassy slopes watching the footy. Grab a beer and a snack and enjoy the last rays of the sun on the eastern side of the ground on a fine Autumn/Winters day. Parking is rubbish, take public transport.
Beer footy food festival was hectic. Plenty of bent spokes, a couple of drorts responsibly served, and I got up to 14 flaps in the portaloo, not quite as many as the lady behind me though. Thanks Jess for bringing the oysters, I’m sorry I
Welcome to Gary's park... and your own personal hell!!!! If you see a small black dog running sadistic circles steer clear! Some say they've seen him eat a Hungarian Vizsla whole, others reckon his poo once trapped the soul of an 8 month
Wow this is the ultimate hipster cliche pub - could have been inspired by Portlandia or vice-versa. Staff uniform is beards, tattoos and scruffy art school t-shirts. OK no complaints, I am almost one of you, just an observation
If you're going to picnic, remember it's a dog park! Dogs will come over, they might jump on or bump into you. Dog people, it's semi-fenced, open at a couple of points on to the road. Love it, always such a good crowd there.
Good space, dogs walkers off leash allowed. Field in the middle available that is not for dogs if you want to kick a ball around. Difficult to find info on when the field is reserved and unavailable for public use.
First time to Henson Park. This park has alot of history behind it. Great, fantastic and family friendly park. Love the hills. Great view from the hill. Canteen and the mini bars on the hill are a great idea.
Awesome park. Most days you will find a mix of young families and people out with their dogs. Come down and watch the Newtown Jets or a local AFL game. A Marrickville staple, happy to have it close by.
Beer is good, Philter.. makes a change from drinking warm, stale VB in a large stadium Great for kids to run around.. the entertainment is good, watch out for the uni cyclist when the Jets score a try
Home of the brave. No better way to spend a sunny Saturday arvo than sitting on the hill watching the mighty Jets. Fantastic fun atmosphere. Just waiting for a new scoreboard you can actually read!
Love this place. The home of the Newtown Jets. Great place to bring kids as there is a lot of open space and grass. You can get a beer and watch all the original League teams like Norths, Wests etc
Great place to catch up. Can't take dogs there when sporting events are on. There is plenty of bins and places for water. Great place to bring kids as there is a lot of open space and grass.
Great oval. Made even better by having no linemarking in the car park. Means you can park anywhere. I'm also glad there's no overbridge between the oval and the school. Keeps the kids out.
Fantastic place to take your doggies for some exercise. Friendly people and the pub is just a couple of blocks away. The pub has a dog area and is very relaxed, highly recommended!
Brought my dog here one afternoon and my schnoodle puppy had a ball. Everyone was really friendly. My friends and I then headed up to the dog-friendly Henson Hotel for a beer.
Old school footy oval with two Can Bars. Toilets under the scoreboard are a bit like something out of the movie I Am Legend, but don't be afraid. Go the mighty Newtown Jets!
What a fantastic surburban footy ground. Saw an AFLW match and for $10 in you get to walk around the whole area, have a few ales and pretty much sit wherever you want!
Great off lead area. On a slant so the puppys get worn out quickly. Can't take dogs there when sporting events are on. There is plenty of bins and places for water.
We watched rugby league on a beer and food day and had a really enjoyable day. I would recommend it to anyone thinking of watching some footy and having a day out.
Great place for an arvo lawnsnaking session and to play with other people’s dogs. Bring a jacket if you’re drinking into the evening though as it gets cold quick!
Hidden gem. Home to grass roots footy and local dog walkers. My dogs' paws immortalized in cement there. Needs more trees - plenty of space for some big beauties
I love Henson Park just for being able to walk for your life around it a few times and love each lap, and can also see various sports going on at the same time!
I had not been there since I was a kid. Tremendous Rugby League ground , old style Grandstands and lots of hills. It would be amazing to watch a match here.
Brings back great memories going back to Henson park. Still the same original grounds!! Great to see the AFLW play their games here. Keep them playing
People take their dogs for a walk their but it's not a dog park. It's a football oval Home of the Newtown Jets a legendary Rugby League Club.
Perfect afternoon and setting for the AFLW Swans v Collingwood. Lovely ground and terrific atmosphere.. perfect home for our Swannie ladies!
Great venue and atmosphere. Absolutely love a Jets home game. Where else can you let your kids run on the field at half time and full time?
Awesome place to watch your football. Dog friendly. Let's the kids play on the ground inbetween games & quarters. Food is awesome too.
Great local stadium, they have put a lot of effort into fixing the grass and amenities - recommend a visit for supporting local sports
Great park sitting in amoung a residential area. Easy access, wonderful grassy hills to sit on and picnic. Match day is great fun.
Dogs off leash, toilets, big open space in densely-packed area, nice people, cafe and pub close by with take-out options. Great!
Brilliant oval to watch the swans women win...don't tink they were ready for big crowd..but very friendly staff & security.
What lots of people don't know is that it's a fantastic off-leash dog park. Heaps of dogs and friendly people at all times
Classic traditional suburban ground, one of the last old school rugby league fields still left in the inner city of Sydney
Sat in the King George V stand...brings back memories of the early sixties watching my dad. Now watching the grandson .
Great to watch AFLW at. Could do with some update of facilities. Would be better if you didn't need to use porta loos
Home of the NSW Cup team and first Rugby League Club in Australia the mighty Newtown Jets. Best place to watch footy
Tribute to football. Magnificent place. Ground in great condition. Still good. Really great place to watch football.
Always a good day out. Fun sporting contests, a good venue with an enjoyable vibe; and the crowd is always 8,972.
One of the best grounds to watch football from ur car if raining. Great atmosphere, great venue for football.
AFLW was played here today day. GWS Vs WB. Great old school park. Nice hill area to sit and watch the game.
Big park with an oval in the middle for sports, good for the dogs to run around and enjoy the green area
Good family friendly park to watch Newtown jets. Had craft beer festival amd food trucks today. 5 *****
Love this park! I pet sit many dogs that too love this park. I can't wait to take my little guy here.
Henson Park is my home away from home. It is my favourite place to go to watch my Jets play football
Best stadium I have ever been to. I love to watch the Newtown Jets play rugby league here.
Do yourself a favour and go watch the jets play. Great day out on the best hill in Sydney.
A good suburban sports facility. Needs more shade though to escape to on a sunny day
The Inner West's Crucible of Proper Footy. Home of the people's team Newtown Jets.
Great afternoon watching the jets play old style footy venue 'how it used to be '
Awsome place to watch a Good game of Footy,or thru the week Walk your Dog.....
Great Ground for Rugby League & AFL, It was an honour to play AFL on there
What can you say.... it's the Newtown Jets annual craft beer festival
Great dog park. I am sure it has other uses on the weekends.
Typically Inner West. Lovely people, lots of dogs. Fun.
Great park for sports, doggy walk, and picnic.
Great place to watch the footy.
