"I agree with some of the negative reviews about Moorabbin Aquarium"
Would give a 0/5 if I could, absolutely the worst aquarium I have ever been too. Most fish were dead or dying, black beard algae was in nearly every tank, there was one aquarium with multiple dead/dying goldfish, one tank had so many cichlids in it they couldn't move well, another had a large 80$ dinosaur catfish with white spot and they weren't medicating it. Tanks looked extremely dirty and cramped, Bettas were kept in jugs on top of some tanks while others had been thrown in a tank with cichlids and had over 10 bettas in one tank. Not to point out they price themselves ridiculously, I gasped at the 25$ price tag for one otocynclus catfish, when breeders and every other aquarium sell them for 8$each. Then there's the chemicals, wide range, stupid prices. 120 for one litre of seachem prime, yet I can walk 3km down the road and pay the same for two litres. The WORST aquarium in the Melbourne area, do NOT go to Moorabbin aquarium. Edit-- Here I thought a normal business owner could be normal and non childish. But from his reply I see he sees anyone who doesn't like his way they must be thieves. I wasn't the one with the bag but we have dealt with catfish and Dino fish for past 16years. Your fish were in horrid conditions. The fact you sell anything is luck on your side that people are ignorant to the fact your fish stock are supremely low grade. I hope your large catfish lived and you medicated it's white spot. I still give you a negative review. Even more so with your fat head baby attitude. To anyone reading. Mentone aquarium is a bit up the road, has more stock, is clean, safe and has lovely staff and healthy fish stock for much better prices. If you want freshwater, tropical or saltwater stock go to Mentone aquarium. Not Moorabbin aquarium. Mentone aquarium 15/10 Moorabbin aquarium -1000000/10
So I had previously gone to a big well known aquarium and got advice and spent over $1800.00 on my first tropical aquarium setup 4ft tank. I explained what sort of fish I wanted to keep and how I thought things would go with the maintenance of the tank. The shop assistant said yes all good, take all of this and you'll be great. Well everything that I was told was not at all true ( let's leave it at that )! looking through google and reviews I found Moorabbin Aquarium and Mike ( the owner ). This Aquarium has so many varieties of fish, far more species of fish than any other place I've been. There is everything you could ever want, just keep looking and you'll find it and if Mike doesn't have it he will try to get it in for you. Now the advice I got from Mike fixed all the issues I had with the equipment I had purchased from the other store. Mike's advice of what fish to keep and how to care for them has been so educational and a must to be successful at keeping your fish happy and healthy. In summary Mike's willingness to give you his time and wealth of knowledge seams effortless to him. The fish he has seem to be more vibrant and of a higher quality than the other aquariums that I have been to in the past. Since going to Moorabbin Aquarium I have decided not to go anyway else for my fish stock or aquarium needs. This place really is the one stop shop for everything you need to be successful and enjoy being an aquarium owner. Keep up the good work Mike.
Highly overpriced fish, poor store set up as if all the trash is just at the front of the store as well as a very low stock of fish species. Way better off going somewhere else as it’s a waste of time and money! Second response to your feedback. - I have been to your store now twice with a 5 month gap hoping that things would have been set up from the first visit, only thing to change was a rack where now you place decorations that go in fish tanks. As for the store itself I understand the moving to upsize however, opening a store that is in “Construction” is no way to run a business as it’s untidy and could be a risk to customers. Your fish however are not “A or B” grade fish since they all are fairly common, an example of that is your betta fish, most are nearly four times the cost of the average from other stores and the other stores even have higher quality, such as lineage, tail types, gender range, colours, patterns and even other species. Other examples include fish that are still twice the price like common goldfish to even phantom catfish, or a feeder fish which is three times the cost of normal. The health of the fish as well isn’t that great either, I will give you props though for trying to keep them healthy as I know from some other places it can be a little tricky however there were fish with swim bladder issues, fin rot, missing scales and of course dead fish at the bottom of some tanks.
I traded in a large pleco & bought a smaller one off the owner. I bought 6 more fish from him. I've had my tank for 2 years & the fish I have in there are healthy. I had the Sharks I bought all die & I had advice from the owner on how he thought to transfer them by leaving then in the bags for 10-15 minutes which is the norm & in turn putting a glass of water from the tank in the bags and then the fish will swim out of the bags into the tank & allow a bit more time . Then I had the 4cm long gold spotted pleco die on me a day later. From 6 fish I have 2 left & are really healthy swimming around like the rest of my fish. I rang the owner & the response I got was I've had them for a while (2weeks). He wiped his hands from the situation, hung up on me. Before he hung up he blamed my water. When I was being served at his shop his mouth stunk of Alcohol & he was telling me stories of an aquarium that sells fish in Sunshine were I had visited once deals in drugs & puts chemicals in the water to keep his fish alive. I've still got fish from the aquarium in Sunshine & I have had no problems with the fish I bought from there. I went to Mentone aquarium & bought more fish & so far so good. I have many fish in my tank & some are smaller & bigger than the ones I bought from Moorabin Aquarium & had nothing wrong with them. I will be staying with the Mentone aquarium and not look back to Moorabin ever again.
I agree with some of the negative reviews about Moorabbin Aquarium. The shop was always a mess and I know he overcharges. His tanks were a mess most of the time I went there. He once had a load of fish for sale in a tank, dozens. I got him to keep me a pair. When I returned the next week he told me one had died. He charged me for it. How can you trust that.Even though he still had half a tank left of the fish I asked to be kept for me. He doesn’t take negative feedback well. I bought a lot from him regarding supplies , tank etc. Just felt he was in for robbing you for what he could get. Store was a mess, I felt it was all just running down. In fact. I give him NO STARS. I’m surprised he is still in business
Best fish store around. Michael will help and guide you through any questions you have whether it be your first tank or your 10th. While most fish stores will let you wonder around aimlessly, Michael will come up to you and ask if you need any help and lead you in the right direction. Michael has given up hours of his time just helping me decide what direction I personally wanted to go in. If issues are encountered, the team are great at giving advice and solving the issue and offer free water tests with any purchase. While you're here make sure to check out their massive eels and huge collection of rainbow fish. Highly reccomended.
I recently purchased a new 240 Litre tank from an aquarium and have been struggling to set it up properly. I was given just a basic test kit and knew nothing about all the other requirements of a tropical set up. After meeting Mike at Moorabbin aquarium on the weekend i realised there was so much more to do. Mike's knowledge is exceptional and his help and advice is something I have not seen from any other store I have dealt with. I would highly recommend that you visit Moorabbin Aquarium for all your Set up and ongoing management of your aquarium I know I won't be going anywhere else in the future Regards John Wheatley
If you are expert, intermediate or beginner, I suggest coming down to Moorabbin Fish Aquarium. Michael is a Fish Expert, he has helped me above and beyond. I can’t start with the amount of knowledge he has. He has helped me get my tank started successfully and has helped with any enquires I have had. Michael takes the time to help you, even though he works by himself he makes sure he spends time with each customer. I can not recommended him enough, I have seen some other negative comments below, it is not the experience I have had at all. I am glad I have found this hidden little gem.
very rude and poor customer service from person who runs the store. Just interested in pushing whatever he has in stock and will not advise of other better products if he can't get them. Very arrogant and limited in knowledge. Found him to be critical of other shops and over charges. Have visited multiple times and will not go back again due to disgusting attitude. Providing you keep buying he tolerates you. Shop is over crowded with items and not safe to have children walking around. Work Safe should investigate as its a hazard waiting to happen.
Very helpful, walked us though what needed to be fixed, had very clear and easy instructions, really nice people and feel to this place! Lots of different fish, helped us understand what was wrong in our pond, how to fix it, wrote out instructions for us. Even helped us when we called later saying that we think some calculations were off because we gave the wrong measurements, and helped us to get the right measurements. Over all a great place, very helpful and friendly.
What a pleasure the owner was to deal with. I needed to purchase a reptile tank for my granddaughter and really didn’t know what I needed. He advised me and spent a lot of time explaining things to me when he didn’t need to as he already had the sale. It’s nice to see someone growing and expanding the business that they love in this tough economy. Well done and Thankyou for your help. I’ll definitely be back to visit your new premises all sorted out from moving.
I sought advice on a very sick fish. Michael carried out several tests on our water, discussed our cleaning routine and provided us with expert advice. This advice saved our fish and our other fish and plant life are also flourishing. I learnt more about fish in half an hr with Michael than I had learnt over the years. His passion is contagious and he always takes my kids around the shop to view and learn something new of the rarer species.
Excellent advice and stocks a range of high quality aquarium products. Plant selection is impressive. Shop is a bit cramped but they do well with the space they have to fit in so much stock. Have helped me out numerous times with water testing and algae problems. One issue I've had was quickly resolved and they are now my preferred aquarium. You can park behind the shop.
Recently visited to set up my aquarium again. I found a great selection of accessories, chemicals, tools, tanks, rocks, wood, plants and fish. Salt water and fresh water options available. Friendly and professional staff, able to talk through many topics; including the footy. Store layout looks good, but the entrance needs some rearranging.
Very greatful for all the help I had with a problem possibly caused by an infection from a cheaper store in inner bayside. The owner was very patient and he guided me through the problem. A big thank you. Notice to self, always go for quality not economy. You get what you pay for. Lesson learnt. Will be back here for sure
Absolute best aquarium I know. I've never had a tank issue which this shop hasn't been able to help me out with, and I'm extremely grateful for their service and assistance. Top quality products in store and the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and patient. Would recommend 10/10.
The owner was very helpful until we paid an extortionate amount of money. We made the mistake of telling him we were new to aquariums. We paid over $1800 for supplies (not the tank or filter or fish) and then he refused to give us a receipt. This guy is a thief and a crook!!
Way too much stock of products not enough time spent with the fish. Found way too many fish dead or dying. Not a aquarium worth the time of a visit but I do see potential to be a good place but will require lots of effort and removal of excessive amount of products
First time in my life visit an aquarium for my 13 years old son for his first pet. Michael the owner was so patient and explain everything in details to us. I came to this shop based on the previous review and they are all described accurately. Thanks Everyone.
Great little shop. So much stock in one place. Excellent selection of freshwater fish and plants. Pretty big collection of corals and marine fish also at great prices. Extremely friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit and will be heading there again.
Owner is very helpful and has been in the business for decades. Very honest and will give you free advice. I highly recommend you visit them if you are thinking about setting up an aquarium or have an existing one He also offers free water testing.
Michael is one knowledgeable man. My pond has never looked so good. His advice is second to none and his prices are very competitive. You do not just buy things from him, you leave knowing a little more about your aquarium/pond. …
A great time to explore everything aquariums! Incredible selection of marine life .Absolutely everything you'd need for supplies. Friendly, approachable and smiling happy staff.Would definitely recommend, well worth the trip …
Thankfully I've finally found an aquarium store that is truly dedicated to the world of fish. Mike and his team are very knowledgeable. You won't find more experience crammed under oner roof! Cannot recommend enough.
Lot’s of fishes and plenty of stuff to buy for your aquarium. Inside is a bit small, just enough space for one person in every aisle. Staff is kind and explains well everything we need to know.
Great local shop offering top class service and knowledge. Specialist range of fish in all sorts of sizes at a reasonable price. The aquarium really felt otherworldly! Would come back again.
One of the few true enthusiast aquariums in the area. Good pricing, considerably better than their local competition. Very knowledgeable people, worth a visit if you need advice.
good supply of equipment and a decent amount of livestock. Prices are not too excessive and the staff helped me with the questions i had. Would recommend and will be returning.
amazing experience! One of the treasure aquarium in Melbourne. The owner has a lot of experience with all the fish and is very kind☺️ offered a lot of great advice
Huge selection in a quiet hidden away industrial area. However more than makes up for it with his huge selection of fish, accessories and advise.

Awesome little shop with very friendly staff. Extremely professional, wish I had found them earlier! Great range of fish and supplies.
Owner is a good guy. Being an Asian guy, I am kind of scared to ask questions to staff, but owner still explain to me very patiently.
Mike is very knowledgeable, great stock. The perfect place to get all you fishy needs! All while supporting your local :)
Very helpful and ready with good advice for us while solving problems and taking care of our fish tank.
Good selection of fish and products, but it’s so over priced that I will never go back again.
