The melodious tree towers in the heart of City Park, just down the road from the New Orleans Museum of Art. During the summer, the oak provides a reprieve from the sultry Louisiana heat and enchanting tunes from the wind chimes strung from the branches. The chimes are all tuned to ring out in the pentatonic scale and are painted black to blend in with the plant’s natural shadows. The instruments range in size, with one of them reaching a length of 14 feet. The harmonious effect is that of a relaxing, tinkling symphony. Although the Singing Oak is in plain sight of visitors, not many people know about this hidden New Orleans gem. Take a few minutes to sit beneath the Chime Tree and walk away just a little bit more relaxed than when you arrived. Copied from Atlas Obscura.

I was told this tree was "filled with wind chimes". No. More than a few, but not filled. Nothing special about it at all. Not even a plaque explaining why there's a random tree with some wind chimes in it. Also, one bench. One. This place (the section of the park where the tree is located) is overrun by rude joggers and cyclists that seem as if they think they own the land. It's called CITY PARK, not PRIVATE GYM. I've noticed some people suggesting this be listed as a tourist attraction... Follow the tourists to Louis Armstrong Park instead. This is a waste of time.

We love this special spot in City Park! We enjoy walking the loop around the lake & stopping by the Singing Oak to sit & think or stretch for a bit. There is often only 1 bench by the tree (which you’re lucky to find unoccupied!) & the dirt by the tree can be mushy or muddy from recent rain (so be careful!). Even so, the music from the giant chimes hanging overhead from the tree branches makes meandering over to the Singing Oak totally worth it.

Went to the Singing Oak after a looooong day of walking around the French Quarter. It was a windy day - not too windy, but enough to where the chimes were really sounding off. It was just so gorgeous and peaceful. The sound is best closest to the roots, I walked around it a few times just to hear it well. It’s away from noise and distraction and I found it to be a very soothing and healing part of my day. I’m so glad I was able to go see it.

Stroll along Zemurray Trail and across to the New Orleans famous "Singing Oak". Settle down, relax and allow mind soothing enchanting chimes seep into your inner conciousness.Treat yourself to some quality stress free time and retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. With its nearby lake and wide open green spaces, this is truly a wonderful social interaction and family gathering location !

Brings blanket and relax for 30 minutes in the park on a breezy day and you'll feel rejuvenated. The sculpture garden is free just north of here and you can watch swans in the lake. Bring a picnic. On a nice day in November it wasn't crowded. It was lovely.

As a tourist attraction this is likely underrated. You've been walking 12 miles a day, and you may be a little hung over. Sit on the bench an relax. Wait for the wind to play a song as you enjoy the shade. Go without an agenda, take your time. New Orleans is not a stressful place to visit, and just relaxing here helps what little stress you have left. More parks need this.

City Park is one of my favorite areas to power walk the trails. Beautiful greenery and CLEAN. Other seems to enjoy which creates a friendly atmosphere. One issue lately are numerous pet owners with unleashed animals. Not sure how this can be enforced. It would be benefical to all if owners would commit to the rules. It is for everyone's safety.

I had trouble finding this tree at first. Just walk along the pond/lake that has the paddle boat swans in it and you will hear/see it. Bring bug spray and blankets/chairs! It’s so soothing. I wanted to relax underneath it but didn’t prepare for a day in the park. So come prepared to truly enjoy comfortably! My favorite time in Nola.

One of the most peaceful and tranquil places to visit (in the outdoor areas of New Orleans and Metairie combined.) Should add several more benches. Chimes vibrate at such a deep and soulful frequency like music, creating a quiet meditative space. About 100 paces off from the walking trail around Big Lake.

  • John Hsieh

Spoiler Alert: The Singing Oak sings because there is a bunch of wind chimes installed onto a big oak tree. Some of the wind chimes are incredibly large and produce such beautiful sounds. This is a great spot to relax and chill out while traversing through Zemurray Trail around the Big Lake.

  • christopher trochez

When the wind blows you can sit under these branches and hear a symphony playing above you. Its another of the more unknown spots in the city. What it is most of all is something different right at Big Lake and off the path to the museum of art. Worth a visit if you're out that way,

  • shloka shetty

If you're passing by City Park... You must swing by the swinging oak... sit underneath it for a few minutes and just zen out for a while listening to the wind chimes. Truly relaxing experience.

It's a tree with various sizes and tones of windchimes. Nice if you're there, but not worth going out of the way. But from here, walk 5 minutes northwest and experience an amazing and free sculpture garden! That alone was worth the 3 hour drive to New Orleans.

The years go by, the world keeps changing, and still the magic tree remains the most beautiful of my dreamy afternoon memories. Just to lay on the grass under the shade of this giant tree and drift away with the vibrations of each deep sound... It is healing.

  • Sonya Hoffman

My husband hesitated to follow me on my quest to find the tree, b/c “it’s just a tree”, until we got there, and the massive tree provided ample shade, impressive beauty, inspired respect, and dazzled our ears, lulling us to take a cat nap in City Park.

  • Vandana Kerketta

It’s a beautiful attraction. Especially coz it’s usually so windy here you can always hear the tree singing. The park it is located in is also really nice and calm.

They moved the bench. It's hard to really enjoy the tree without a place to sit and relax. I do love this tree though.

Sadly the grass was soaking wet and the wind was still so I didn't hear the wind chimes in the Singing Oak. This is one of so many huge Oak trees in this park worth seeing with your own eyes. If you're in New Orleans go see the Sining Oak.

  • all worries

The coolest part is that you can't hear the chimes until you're right up under the year tree. A nice place to relax.

City Park is an amazing place to visit in New Orleans. This tree has beautiful sounding wind chimes attached to the tree. It is a serene place of reflective meditation. I plan on returning when I visit the Crescent City again.

  • Shuo Huang

Best tree in the city (except for 1); always called it the chime tree though- didn't know it actually had a name! The chimes singing in the breeze makes it a perfect spot to sit and chill. There are a couple of benches too.

  • Paul Guarino

The whole park is beautiful not just this tree. I encourage you all to explore all 1300 acres

Also known as the chime tree, there's one bench but lots of space to picnic at. There are several exercise classes (happenings) that take place here on any given day as the sounds and views are quite soothing!

  • Daniel Anderson

A must see when you are in town. The park is beautiful and relaxing at sunset. The wildlife, especially the baby ducklings came right up to us. The singing oak will sing to you when the wind blows the chimes.

  • Henry

Come here on a day with a bit of a breeze and listen to the wind chimes make a melody! Stand right by the tree to hear it most clearly. The chimes on the south side are coherent with the scale of D Major.

  • Carrie Tracy Pizzalato (Caliphia)

An amazingly magical place everyone should go to! Especially on a windy day! Will be coming back here many, many times. You can just feel the healing energy in the sounds, it's beautiful. Must see!

  • Brett Ansite

I’m not generally a fan of modern art, but this wind chime art installation succeeds brilliantly. It’s a large oak tree with tonally compatible wind chimes. No nearby benches, sadly.

  • Jon Gibson

Heads up! Unfortunately, there are no chimes on the tree at all. Beautiful park and a peaceful place to sit, but I wonder if they take them down at certain parts of the year?

  • Angie P.

I love this place. I ended up there with a few friends late at night. We were exactly where we should have ended up. How beautiful the low chimes are in the dead of night.

  • Heilens Galue

Amazing spot for a picnic or just relaxing on the grass. The tree makes some amazing music when the wind is right. The entire park is beautiful and worth a visit.

  • YB Husain

Beautiful, peaceful. Usually the spot under the tree is taken by at least one person, but the space around is large enough to spread out and enjoy the chimes.

  • Bernard Jeremy

Beautiful. Peaceful. Serene. Sitting under this oak as the music filled the air was a spiritual experience. So glad I got to be there with this amazing tree!
