After being recommended dine at to Unica Cucina E Caffe and its famous seafood pasta it is unfortunate to have to share this experience. We had a table of 6. Settling in, we had to ask for menu's. They gave us two menus - for 6 people. We ordered a serve of bread and 4 slices arrive. So we had to share 4 slices of bread among 6 people. Is it so hard to count the heads on a table? If two additional half slices of bread are going to send you bust then you're in the wrong business. Not a good start. We ordered starter plates that were well presented however lacking in flavour and over cooked. And expensive. But the non-eventful evening was just getting started ..... We waited an hour and a half for our main course. No apology or explanation. "We're busy" is not an excuse. By then it was approaching 10pm and we'd lost our appetite an hour ago. When the main meals finally arrived - their so called 'famous pasta marinara' was, well, I'll get right to the point, ordinary, bland, boring and over priced. Talk about a let down. By the way, we come from Italian backgrounds and know how to create an awesome pasta marinara. It's not rocket science. But this was just plain awful. Two of the staff were friendly, while another couldn't care less. Wait staff can only work within the environment set by the owner and chef. I could see the staff were stressed and trying to do their best. The fish rots from the head. The seating was uncomfortable - wooden benches with no back support. As we get older so too our bodies need support - especially when you're waiting an hour and a half for a main course. One of our group ordered a short black which turned out to be just a few drops of coffee. Seriously - you could almost count the drops. Jokingly, he asked for something that he could drink and not see disappear as it travelled from the bottom of the cup to the rim. Our group of 6 all shared a similar view. The restaurant under delivered, was over priced, impersonal, and promoted itself way out of its league. In fairness, I've read the good reviews so maybe we copped a bad night. But bad it was - a forgetful and uncomfortable dining experience. A real disappointment. I do not enjoy writing reviews that aren't positive, but I cannot in good faith recommend this restaurant.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this review of Unica Cucina Italian restaurant.I had been looking forward to dining at this establishment for some time, as I had heard great things about the food and atmosphere. Unfortunately, my experience was far from positive. First and foremost, the quality of the food was extremely poor. The flavors were bland and there was a distinct lack of taste in every dish our group tried. The steak, in particular, was rubbery which was a major disappointment. In addition to the poor quality of the food, the service was equally disappointing. Our booking was forgotten, and the waitresses were unaccommodating. When I tried to provide feedback on the subpar meal, they did not take it well and seemed unwilling to listen. Furthermore, the menu prices were inflated and did not match the quality of the food being served. It was clear that this restaurant was more concerned with making a profit than providing a satisfactory dining experience. To top it all off, the owner of the restaurant was unprofessional and told me she has been in business for 7 years and that they did not need my business. It is clear that they are unfit to be in the hospitality industry. Overall, my experience at Unica Cucina Italian restaurant was thoroughly unpleasant. The poor quality of the food and bad service, combined with the rude staff and overpriced menu, made for a truly disastrous dining experience. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and would advise caution to anyone considering dining here.

Turned away family with pram and expected the mother to hold the baby in her arms they deemed it as a fire Hazard? How logical is that… building code or fire brigade don’t have any such restrictions.

Went there tonight for dinner. We both ordered the marinara, which is on the menu as having king prawns and prawn cutlets amongst swimmer crab, clams and mussels. When the meals arrived there was not a prawn in sight. While the meal itself was delicious at $51.00 I thought it was overpriced without the prawns and further felt they should have told us when we ordered that there were no prawns. Given that it is listed as an ingredient on the menu, it is a major oversight. The highlight were the waitresses. Lovely friendly girls. I have just read the response from this restaurant. Their assertion that there were prawns of any description in the marinara we had last night is completely false. Will never go there again. Disgusting response. Please see their menu item taken from their website just now listing King Prawn and Prawn Cutlets neither of which were in our meals last night. I would have had more respect for them if they had apologised or acknowledged their omission. Most disappointing place I've ever come across! Featured on Post cards? Authentic Italian? Dining Experience? What a joke! To say their standards aren't there due to it being a busy summer period is beyond disappointing and a poor excuse. The owner is rude and arrogant!! Our experience started off with their booking system not confirming our reservation. But I thought I'd let it slide and continue with the dinning experience. Then seeing another group leave as they had a pram with a new born, and was told to leave it outside...but decided to let that not effect our mood. So now, onto the food experience. Every meal we got was a disappointment. Seafood marina, famous dish - tasted gross, hoping I don't get food poisoning from the mussels that smelt like fish. At the end, I thought I'd give the owner some feedback. Her response was "it is, was it is and everywhere is the same and don't come during summer". Feedback from the owner taken onboard, but lets make it easy and say dont bother full stop!! I can't express how disappointed I am about this place! Not worth your time or money for their overpriced dishes.

Food was yum - we had the gnocchi and rigatoni. Both were really nice (5/5). That said, you don't want to be hungry or in a hurry before coming here. We were told it would be an hour before mains arrived but it a) felt like a pressure tactic to force a starter meal order b) we didn't get our mains for 1h45m and c) we were asked if we wanted to order dessert before mains even arrived. Got my drink order wrong and instead of apologising they told me that's not what I ordered (both my partner and I heard the correct order). We were left waiting for 15-20 mins after asking for 2-3 more mins before finalising our order. (4/5) Some other comments mentioned a prickly attitude from the owner and while we don't know if the owner was there, the "main" person was quite blunt. No ceremony, just snappy responses. Table wait staff were friendly though so I guess it is what it is. Busy road so it's not exactly romantic but I guess this probably isn't the intention. (3/5)

We ordered mini marinara, ravioli with lamb ragu, kids ragu pasta and anti pasti platter. Food was super mediocre - Kids pasta was undercooked. Food felt like it wasn’t cooked with with passion. What left us utterly disappointed was the service as we felt very rushed by the floor manager/owner and waitresses throughout our dinner experience. Before we settled down into our seats with our kids and looked at the menu properly to decide what we wanted to eat as a group, we were made to order our food on the spot by the manager. As we were eating, different waitresses will come by our table to ask if we were done with the plates, even though there was food on the plate and we were obviously still eating. This happened to us 5 times in the span of 30 mins. We didn’t felt welcomed at all and couldn’t enjoy the food as much as we wanted to, even though our dinner session was well within the timing and there were also empty tables around us. It’s sad that this restaurant doesn’t put customers interest and experience as first priority and we will not be back again.

This is why we regularly frequent Unica Cucina. It's a welcoming and comfortable environment, with calming and informal décor. The food is rich, tasteful, delicious and filling. The product quality is consistently outstanding, always exceeding my expectations every time. This night was an anniversary dinner with my wife. The customer service from the owner and her staff are second to none. Your welcomed on arrival and then all the waiting staff check in everytime they walk past your table. They ensure your glass is never empty and are happy to offer advice on food selections. (And take your picture if you ask). A truely enjoyable experience on every level. If your looking for authentic southern style italian food, this place is worth going. A great reminder of traditional home style food just like nonna use to make. Well done, we will keep coming back. Love it.

My review is a little bit different.. don’t get me wrong, the food is amazing, however, as a tradie, I would highly recommend not working at Unica. I did labouring on October 3rd and my invoice is yet to be paid. I have followed up Michelle (the owner) numerous times. A couple of weeks ago I managed to get through to her on a private number as she had blocked my actual phone number - I questioned my invoice given she has 14 day payment terms and I was essentially told I’m low priority and she didn’t care. It’s not in my nature to write a review, let alone a negative review, but my hands are tied and I do NOT want any other trade working for this business to be put on a priority list rather than being paid for the work already carried out. I don’t go to this restaurant, have a feast, get the bill… then say I’ll pay you in 2 months! Do not work for this restaurant as a trade !!!!!!

We went for a late lunch on a July Sunday around 3.00. It was obviously between sittings and we expected the kitchen might be closed , but we had a great meal. We were the only guests so it was enjoyably quiet.3 of us shared the calamari which was enough for 3 to share. Very fresh and delicately cooked. My wife had the marinara and loved it . i had John Dory which was delicious, and our son had bolognese. The serves were large and everything was fresh . Although all dishes had tomato based sauces, they were all quite different and excellent. Not the generic napoli sauce added to everything on the menu tga you find elsewhere. The deserts were delicious too , a Sciliano Canelloni and the hot chocolate cake with coffee . It was all delicious and reasonably priced too. Will go again next time down that way.

The food was amazing. No complaints there what-so-ever. Great taste, huge portions. 5/5 The service was very lacking. We were walk in customers. Seemed like they didn't really want us there at first. Begrudgingly found a table for us. Came back a few minutes later to tell us it didn't matter when we ordered, as they will be prioritising their booked tables, even though those customers hadn't even arrived. We ordered anyway and were then told it will be at least 45 minutes wait. One wait lady spent nearly the entire time we were there standing and entertaining the one table only, barely leaving them at all. 1/5 I would advise to book, as you may get a much better experience than we did. Walk in customers seem to be a chore for them and they won't look after you very well.

Visit Unica on Sunday 12th February. Terrible customer service, terrible food, we ordered steak and got Stew. I ordered Lasagna that wasn't put through came 30 minutes after everybody else received their meal. When i paid i ask owner why my meal was so late, her reply was we forgot to put your order through. When i ask where my meal was the waitress she rudely said in a minute. I ask why the waitress didn't tell me that they forgot my order, The Owners reply was oh well it happens. They also forgot my partners drink and we made an additional order which never came. Honestly have to say i will never visit this place ever again and hope one day the owner learns to treat paying customers with dignity and respect. I still paid for everything i got and didn't ask for refund or discount just wanted to get out of this terrible environment.

The single worst experience I have had in a restaurant. I feel robbed of my money paying $102 for two pastas that were on the specials board and highly recommended by the waiter but also had no price tag. The meal was average at best with very little seafood and little flavour. If you complain, expect to be confronted by the chef who will tell you she has eaten it and it tastes fine. If you want service you are better off cooking at home - we waited 30 minutes to get our order taken - whilst our BYO alcohol sat getting hot on our table because we had no glasses or coolers. We also had 3 meals that weren’t ordered on our table - ironically the more expensive versions of what we did order. I feel robbed of my money and disgusted by the service and borderline abuse from the staff here. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

  • Ivana Stankovic

This is very much based on customer service coz food is amazing. We got there 5.30 ordered by 5.45 and waited to 6.30 to get our antipasto n then another 15 for our dinner. What pushed me was that no1 was inside when we arrived but as soon as they came they all got there meals way ahead of us n here we were still waiting. Tables that came after us got up and left coz they had no services n this is within the hour of us being there. I recommend a friend here n she warned me of there experience with a 5month old on a outside table. Come on common sense needs to prevail I didn't want to believe it till I saw it for my self. So it's not the first time. Your food is amazing but customers service is beyond unacceptable esp after spending close to 300bux

Have been here a few times now and have had the best food i have eaten since my Nonna couldnt be in her kitchen anymore. Gnocchi was amazing with the lamb sauce and it couldve been exactly the same as hers, so soft and fluffy and to die for (she used to make it especially for me as was my favourite!) The Tagliattele last night was perfect the meatballs were so moist and delicous, the sugo was amazing and the perfectly aldente tagliatelle made it such an impressive experience that has haunted me all day Inside is such a warm cosy vibe with such a lovely down to earth, charming owner and an amazing chef with equally professional and friendly staff this is a must go if you are lucky enough to be near Rosebud. Cant wait to get back!

Unica Cucina is a must-visit Italian restaurant that offers a truly unique dining experience. The focus on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients allows for the authentic Italian flavors of the dishes to shine through, while the large portion sizes ensure that you will leave satisfied. The service provided by the staff, led by the dedicated owner Michelle, is truly exceptional. They go above and beyond to ensure that each customer has a pleasant and memorable experience. The attention to detail and the passion that the family puts into the business is evident in every aspect, from the food to the ambiance. I highly recommend Unica Cucina to anyone looking for a delicious and authentic Italian dining experience.

If you want to go hungry go to this restaurant. After being told we had to wait an hour for our food we said ok (understandable, it is a public holiday), so we ordered a dozen oysters as entree. Waitress came back….sorry, no oysters… 45 minutes in and waiting on our spaghetti marinara the waitress comes back to our table and says, sorry, we’re out of prawns. Not good enough. We decided to cancel our order and change it for the risotto with osso buco. SURPRISE, SURPRISE, no osso buco. At that stage we decided to pack it in. At the counter when we were paying for our drinks and the kids meals, the owner did us the grand favour of “removing the surcharge”. Oh wow, gee thanks. No apology from the owner and most of the staff were rude. Absolutely disgraceful. NEVER AGAIN.

  • Julia Florence

I would always prefer quality over quantity. As an Italian myself I would never normally complain about the size of a meal but the sizes were were served were actually ridiculous and we couldn't finish it. We ordered bruschetta from the main waitress who couldn't be bothered with us after that and solely spoke to a couple who were there (hopefully they weren't trying to enjoy a romantic dinner). The bruschetta was lovely - but huge and the Osso Bucco with milanese risotto was so big the girl who bought it out had to do so one at a time. The rice was over salted and the osso bucco was tough - all in all - not a pleasant meal. Wouldn't go back and a note to that waitress - there were other people in the restaurant not just that couple who you attended to.

In my opinion Unica Cucina E Caffe, is truely a unique (as the name suggests) authentic Calabrian, culturally rich and oh so cosy restaurant. Their signature dish, the marinara is nothing short of an absolute true representation of what a Marinara should look and taste like.. made with the freshest seafood, it will leave you asking for some ‘Pane di casa’ just to soak up the left over lobster bisque it’s cooked in. The staff are friendly and accommodating. The owner Michelle is a seriously delightful and charismatic host and, should be commended for bringing a very real and delicious, Italian cuisine experience. Highly recommended. Have been back and will go back.

Loving having Unica Cucina e Caffe' meals in the evening or for lunch delivered. The food is amazing, I've got to try alot if different meals from there and to be honest they are all my favorite foods. The owner Michelle is lovely to deal with as are the waitresses. I'm extremely grateful that they will continue to do online delivery after covid-19 as I don't drive and so it's hard to get out at night time for dinner there. I am sure that I will get there one night with a friend to enjoy the atmosphere. Thanks for another great meal every time I order . If you are interested in trying their food DEFINITELY do

On our way back through we seen this cute little restaurant on our way past, we did a uturn and come back around. We didn't have a booking but we thought screw it let's try, we got a table and sat down although we felt a little annoyance from being a drop in we really enjoyed the food and drinks. The seating was a little uncomfortable as well as such a nice little restaurant the restrooms really need some work. I would eat here again but would book next time as I think it would of made the experience alot better.

1 star rating. Had lunch with family today and was very disappointed with food. Service by waitress was fine. Entrees were ok but my main of traditional lasagne was awful overpowered by unknown flavour which was fennel!! Ate 2 mouthfuls and left it as was disgusting. When I went to pay was very rudely told was because I didn't like it not that it tasted bad ! Was being charged full $32 for 2 mouthfuls. Salad was shredded lettuce with half a tomato !! Overly priced for quality of what you got. Also charged me half price...how generous. Traditional lasagne I think not!! Never again!!!

An instant favourite. Always make an effort to visit when we are down this way. The atmosphere is so relaxed and comfortable, the service has always been impeccable, and the FOOD! Food is delicious, no doubt about that. Very small desserts on big plates, desserts are not worth the money - sorry! And Waiters, please please please leave patrons alone. You’ve given the meal, leave them to enjoy. Do not come every 5 mins to “check” and see if everything is ok. It is annoying! And also, it is rude to remove someone’s empty plate when other guests are still eating on the table. Wait for everyone to finish and then remove empty plates. Thanks.

Emailed the owner about making a booking for a Sunday to be told 7:30 booking. After struggling with peninsula cabs, called the restaurant to advise would be running 15 minutes late only to be told the kitchen would be closing at 8PM. As the owner of a restaurant, taking a booking from someone not familiar with the area I’m surprised you would leave your customers with 30 minutes to arrive and order at the kitchen. I didn’t nominate a time with you when we booked and could’ve easily arrived an hour earlier. Won’t be booking next time.

  • Kimberley Pitruzzello

Im not usually the type to post reviews but I am so incredibly disappointed. The quality of the food was disgusting.. I ordered rice arancini and got 5 small crumbed olives.. for $16. The calamari was inedible.. cold and the smallest portion. I honestly have never been so disappointed by a restaurant on the peninsula. We spent almost $80 on food that was horrible. I called to discuss the incorrect order and the quality of the food and all I got was a defensive response. So disappointing. I will NEVER be ordering from here again.

  • James Youil

One of the best Italian restaurants. Felt as if we were at a family function with the genuine authenticity and generous portions in which the food was served. All pasta was homemade with the gnocchi melting in your mouth. Deserts were also great with the table agreeing it was the best tiramisu we’d ever tasted. The staff were lovely and very approachable and even took the time to have a friendly chat with the table. Would recommend to anyone as it is the clear standout for a genuine restaurant in the Rye/Rosebud area.

  • Sharon Voltan

Customer service was appalling. Michelle was rude right from the start. Perhaps because we asked for still water instead of sparkling, who would know. Famous marinara? Really? Never heard of it and at $51 a serve a real rip off, but I wouldn't know because they were so rude to us, we left . Michelle, you're behaviour is disgraceful to say the least after what you said about us. You don't treat your customers like that. Rude, deliberately left us waiting will be telling everyone I know to steer clear. Disgraziatti!

  • Philippa Brosolo

Very attentive, friendly staff. Rocket salad had big chunks of tomato, olives, mustard dressing…I was looking forward to a more simple olive oil, balsamic & possibly shaved Parmesan. The spinach & cheese ravioli were nice but , again, overcomplicated with lots of olives and a meat ragout. A simple Napoletana sauce… can’t go wrong with that. Very nice people running the restaurant. Just thought it important to give my feedback.

A great find on our recent get away. Authentic Italian experience, with fresh Customer Service and some flair around some traditional menu items. We did see some previous reviews prior to going in and tbh & we're very glad we looked past them. As an aside, if something has "Nonna" next to the recipe, that is how that Nonna made it for her family. If you order it, you aren't ordering a standard off the shelf version & as such, we don't feel it's open for criticism. We loved it, well done & thank you

  • Mauro Pisegna

Very poor service, overpriced and totally ignored. A family dinner on Fri 20 May (one course and drinks) was $124. The pasta with meatballs was off. The seafood pasta was very good. Couldn't believe the service which was very poor (wait staff couldn't be bothered to understand what was wrong with my meal). The restaurant was not full yet none of the staff could give a toss. When I advised of my poor meal at the end of the evening, nothing was done to address the issue. Would not go back.

Have wanted to try Unica for a while, and we finally did recently. It was worth the wait, I couldn't fault anything about this place. The staff were friendly, very helpful and always smiling. The food was delicious, we had a variety of dishes at our table, we had a sample of all our tables meals, all fantastic. Unica is an amazing venue, great location, great staff, amazing food. Will definitely be going back.

I was delighted with my antipasto and bruschetta. Such a fine balance of flavours. The produce of a very good quality and fresh make a great and unforgettable journey as the service was appropriate and timely. The Cannoli was Crisp and lusciously creamy Matched with a stimulating cappuccino. It was perfect for me. Having own my own Italian Restaurant, I can say the quality was superb and I will return for a pasta dish. Looking forward to my next Visit.

Been here twice now. First just me and my partner and 2nd with new baby and in-laws as well. Everyone loved the food on mothers occasions. Venue is pricey but the portions are big and the standard of food is quite high. Also very accomodating to us with a pram having booked and told them in advance.

Tarantella night on 13/3/22 - Food was uneatable if that is a word, some of my friends walked out. Food was all watery, lasagna only had one layer floating in sauce. Stew was just just mince in sauce, tripa was the same. Better off doing less dishes properly. Forgot to mention that we asked for spoons and we were told there weren’t any. Added some of the sloppy food. Other friends have told me that they won’t eat there again as I won’t either.

So delighted that we happened upon this restaurant. The owner was warm, welcoming and professional. We felt so taken care of. We had the gnocci and caprese and then a delicious chocolate dessert. Finished off with a cup of tea. Everything is high quality. Love the crockery and serving bowls. Will definitely come back when we're in the area again. Excellent customer service and delicious good. Thanks for a wonderful night!

Amazing restaurant with beautiful food and service! Owners are amazing, strong and professional with an awesome business right here if Dan Andrews doesn’t kill it! Submitted reservation request on their website. Did not receive a confirmation, rang 10 times with no answer and ended up going there to be told they were fully booked. As I was waiting for the response, I didn't book anywhere else and missed out on other places. Well done on your stupid process, if you are full then decline the request so we can make alternative arrangements.

Food good. Loud irritating music with repetitive low frequency base beat. Owner refused to reduce volume or change to a more relaxing less penetrating music. The food is delicious and the service is even better. The lovely staff always seemed to know what we wanted before we even had to ask. We needed an Italian fix and boy this didn't disappoint. Sensational Arancini balls followed by their signature dish 'Marinara'. Blue swimmer crab, king prawns, calamari, mussels and seafood bisque. (it's a party in our mouth) This is the best authentic Italian food I've found in Australia. Thank you Michelle for your wonderful hospitality. We'll definitely be back.

We dined in yesterday evening and had a fantastic experience. The food was traditional, fresh and generous servings. Highly recommend the Arancini and Marinara they were delicious! The staff were warm and attentive. The only comment I would add is that the music in particularly the bass was very loud for the space.

Honestly, absolutely authentic restaurant. Came with my fiancé (who moved to Australia recently from Italy) and we were blown away with the flavours of the food. Service was second to none and the owner Michelle was so accomodating and welcoming. Will be back!!! Do yourself a favour and give it a visit.

Very happy to find such an authentic Italian restaurant near Rye. Made the perfect ending to our 3 day stay in the area. Great food and atmosphere. Crab Spaghetti and the Antipasto Platter per Due were our favourites. Wouldn’t recommend getting La Caprese if you’re looking to share with a group (small and overpriced). Stick to the Platter.

  • Amber Fuller

Cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. The food is extraordinary and the service wonderful. After stumbling onto this gem when we were on one of our regular visits to the area we made four bookings over the subsequent 5 days of our trip as we all loved it so much. So glad to finally find a restaurant of this calibre in the area.

The Best Gnocchi One Will Ever Taste. Have had such great experience and memories in this cafe. And on top of all the deliciousness of the dishes, their staff and services were impeccable. Unica Cuccina stands true to its name. A Unique Kitchen that comes with heart and great taste. Can't wait to eat again from your hands. 10/10 ❤

It was such a awesome experience, I haven't enjoyed outside food so much for a long time. Interesting, surprising, yammi and inexpensive - what more can you ask for a dinner on the way back home after a great trip? Nice end of the day. Flexible menu, service is kind and quick. Thank you, will definitively come again.

  • Angela La Verde

As Authentic as it comes!!!! My husband and I had the most delicious meal, coming from Italian backgrounds the gnocchi with Ragu would have to be the best we’ve ever had. Michelle and the team are so lovely and welcoming making the night an amazing experience. We’ll be telling our friends and will definitely be back

  • Merlin51h

Really nice Italian (Calabrese) restaurant. Food and atmosphere was nice with an accordion player playing lots of Italian tunes and requests. Would recommend it. Only complaint would be that the bench seats should be replaced with chairs.

I ate here on Saturday night about 10pm ... noticed the glum owner eating up a dish of crow, prepared with some salty tears. It appears to be a favorite dish of Victorians from that area of town. Better luck next time, I'll see you in another four years!

Lovely meals, atmosphere and server just a bit overpriced imo. I think it would benefit the non Italian patrons also if you translated your menu (i had to look up what some menu items were). We are locals too. First time visit.

It must be bleak for lovers of Italian food on the peninsula if this place rates well. Because it's dire. I can forgive indifferent service if i'm slurping a $13 bowl of Vietnamese noodle soup, but at the prices this place charges, it's just toxic. Hopefully some much needed competition can do better.

  • Katrina Bolmat

The one star is for the food which was sensational, another star for friendly staff. However a very disappointing experience when the dining room was super busy and outside was empty that they refused to serve their dinner menu outside where we felt covid safe. An unfortunate strategy in these times.

  • Coruphius

Amazing food and Atmosphere! I had the Osso Buco con Risotto Milanese for my mains, It was mouth watering! For dessert, I had the Tiramisu. By far the best I've had. I will definitely be dining again to try out some more delicious items off the menu.
