He is distancing himself from the Roman apologists, the people who try to paint crucifixion as an unsavoury side note to the empire and not as its raison d'etre. I am standing in the gutter outside the cinema looking up at the heavy brows, seeing on occasion a heady glint in an eye and shifting backwards when the mouth has stayed open too long and starts to get wet. He has pronounced this raison D, and I know no better, he is perennially 5'11 and I am unresponsive. He told me during the day that it was a pre-release screening, but really this is just the 6:00 session and it is opening day, early, on a sunday and still we have emerged into the dark. I have many memories here, but they are all the same memory, seem to have conflated into one opque image next to the lecturn, a single scene and Harry Potter poster where in my mind only the colour is different. Hugh has stopped talking now, follows my gaze over his own shoulder. What do you think? I don't know, I shrug, open my hands up in my pockets but I don't think he sees. No, about the movie. He says he likes it, overtakes me, says he wanted more from Chris Pratt but otherwise he likes it, likes the colours, the fan service, takes a breath. You feel involved, cared for, I get it. No, the references, all the stuff in the diner, the donkey Kong cabinet, the pictures.. I look past him and towards the station, I imagine snow starts falling. He takes off both gloves and his beanie when I shake his hand. See you for the Barbie premiere

Great movies, good staff, clean theatres, but the cinema is in a very old building, some refurbishment would be welcomed. BUT I regretfully have to rescind my earlier review of 4 stars. This is my neighbourhood cinema, which I frequent regularly. It has become increasing unpleasant. This was the latest... Friday night I walked in with my online ticket and approached the sign telling me online tickets are processed here. No one was in attendance. There was no huge queue there not a crowd at the counter. Behind the counter there were about a dozen boys and girls twittering, chattering and while noticing me, ignoring me. I asked someone if any one was interested in checking my booking, and I got a passing nondescript mumble. After some assertiveness on my part the young girl, without a cursory look waved me through. Obviously a great place to work were it not for the customers! Also, why are the ticket purchased online exhorbitantly priced? A booking on line fee? Really? How is that justified other than sheer greed? Step up on your customer service, train your staff or supervise them, and think about your business model.

I very much like this cinema and has watched a great deal of movies here over the past six months. A few weeks ago I changed my credit-card details and had to wait five days for my new card to be forwarded in the mail. I went to this cinema completely forgetting that they don't accept cash any longer. A very strange realization that the cash I had in my wallet had no value. I am sure the cinema is saving money not having to deal with cash as the owner told me so I can understand where he is coming from. The only problem is as more cinemas and other businesses start to do the same it will be very easy to implement measures over the coming years to eradicate debit cards, credit cards and make the final option for purchasing anything micro-chipping, which is something I don't really like the idea of. If we don't continue to use cash as much as practical, it simply won't be available in the future. So support businesses that give us a choice.

Have been here many times over the years but tonight it was for War of the Worlds as part of the Spielberg retrospective. The Classic is a great old cinema that has undergone many changes over the years. Was in small 35 person seater tonight. Very cute, however some issues with venue, firstly the bathrooms were in terrible shape at 6pm. Not all cubicles had paper, hand towel dispenser empty, rubbish all over floor. Told staff but shouldn't have to. While secondly husband ordered flat white with 2 sugars and staff member made 2 coffees, no, 1 coffee but 2 sugars. Look the staff are all quite young so maybe working at Classic their first job? Anyway I do like the Classic and next time must visit their rooftop bar. Note if you haven't watched War of the Worlds, watch, I've seen it about 10 times, so exciting, my fav Tom Cruise movie. Look forward to revisiting.

Who doesn't love the Classic? Great selection of blockbusters, arthouse, and classics (very on-brand). Compared to some of the behemoth cinema chains, the Classic has very reasonable pricing for both tickets and candy bar items, as well as good membership perks. Also nice to see a wide range of quality bevs and snacks too. My only issue is that parking can be a bit of a pain during busy periods, but there isn't really anything that can be done about that. Overall, I highly recommend choosing the Classic, for your next cinema-outing, and supporting a small business in an industry that has really struggled over the past year and a half. The Classic is an excellent choice for the average movie goer as well as die-hard cinefiles.

Been coming here for years & now they’ve introduced wonderful retrospectives I’m becoming even more regular - Hitchcock, Coen brothers, Almodovar, Melville, David Lynch all having current retros, brilliant. Has a mix of the supermarket cookie cutter chain rubbish too if that’s your fare. Great snack selection - although one day I’m opening a cinema where snacks in the cinema itself are banned, annoying rustling chompers!!! A 2022 additional comment. They want to charge extra to double cup a stinking HOT, dishwater long black. How about not filling it to the brim so I can put in a dash of cold water you tightarses.

We came on Saturday the 22th /07 for the night function of mission impossible, I do understand the demand due to the popularity of some movies, but the Terrible service from the bar staff it was unacceptable…. First super rude and rushed Second , they lie about the product availability, then when I claim about the water availability they say sorry I miss that, you have to line up again and order. The yound lady wearing a red scrunchie at the bar She was extremely rude, i do not normally do this, but she really needs to get her attention to customer fixed. Very very dissatisfied and disappointed. Popcorn was cold.

  • Meez

i like this cinema but the staff has something sinful going on. i left my sunglasses in the theatre and called as soon as i left to see if they had been found and the guy said that they had found them and they were in lost property, came to collect today and magically they are gone! someone has stolen my favorite sunglasses and i am not happy about it. to whichever staff member took my balenciaga sunglasses out of the lost and found i hope you get fired and also jokes on you because they are fake. NOT HAPPY AT ALL because how actually dare you. one star service bye.

Classic cinemas hold you captive with its local charm. A modern event done in old world excellence from the candy bar to the roof top. You walk in and instantly feel you are local and welcome. The art deco building is fantastic and the caretakers show it off with style and grace. I am certainly looking forward to my next visit and will even be willing to go out of the way to get here. (1030 screening is perfect for a movie before lunch with friends on the nearby Glen Huntly Road) Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Gloomy dirty and depressing. Saw a 12.50 showing of the latest Leonard Cohen doco. The cinema lobby (3rd floor I think) was dirty with popcorn strewn on the floor and what looked like a filthy mucus streak on the bench seat. The cinema was gloomy and the stairs very steep creating a real hazard for the (mostly) septuagenarians and octogenarians who were attending the screening. The owners need to consider the likely audience and shift the screening to a more suitable cinemas given the likely number of hip replacees.

  • John Bartzis

A beautiful venue but so surprised how many cartons I counted of plastic bottles I saw today from their supplier (12x dozen) that consume landfill and cause chemical leaking in hot to cold conditions for customers...I have an environmental solution perfect to eradicate this waste & reuse MODA #quality glassware helping this organisation become environmentally sustainable for our earth & keep clients healthy. #Sustainabilityin2020! #shame #zeroemissions #reduceburningoff #keepvictoriasafe #carbonnuetral

Could easily spend every day in here - will not go to the cinema anywhere else! The Classic is my comfort place; it got me through university, I could shuffle in here in my pyjamas and not feel judged, and it continues to be a place where I can go to eat the best popcorn (yes there is a difference) and the best choc tops and snuggle up in a comfy chair and watch whatever I feel like. Staff are legends and it’s in the perfect spot to get dinner before or after, or a drink next door. Love it!

  • Anthony Zaffiro

In good faith I bought a 2 year membership for a pensioner. I find out later that the pensioner cannot buy a ticket because the CLASSIC do not accept cash, only credit cards. Cash is still legal tender. I do not expect the pensioner to apply for a credit card just to a movie ticket to go to their local movie cinema. At most times these movie theatres are almost empty during the day, one would think, common sense. This is discrimination and totally unacceptable.

  • R. Kobayashi

Went here for a movie date night with my partner and we were quite disappointed with our experience. First of all, only credit card only and no cash with the movie tickets being slightly more expensive than most we were expecting a bit more luxury. Comfort wise, seats were stiff and the whole cinema definitely needed a deep clean. Popcorn was smooth, buttery and quite a large size for a medium however the sprite is quite were flat.

  • Sarah Bell

My favourite cinema in Melbourne. Great selection of classics, arthouse, foreign film, and the latest blockbusters. Quaint cinemas - Cinema 2 is a favourite! The rooftop cinema is fantastic in summer (take a blanket and dress warm though). Best cinema bar, even better than gold class at the major chains. Kaiju Crush and Daiquiris on tap! Sign up as a member for cheap tickets every day of the year. Love having Classic as my local.

  • Mira

I waited outside the cinema to purchase tickets from 9.35 am until 10.20 am and the doors remained locked. Finally i waved down a young person inside the cinema who advised me that the websites operating hours must be wrong...Indeed ...2 tickets purchased on website $50 for 2 tickets and $3.50 transaction....Cinema had not been cleaned. We watched a wonderful film which was part of the JFF.......but.....

  • S C

Came on a Tuesday night as all tickets are $10! Couldn’t have a better name for this place. The styling of this place is very classic, but it’s well maintained, clean and the cinemas inside are small but well designed. Seats are comfortable and plenty of leg room. Took up a great offer of tap beer and medium popcorn for $12. Only issue about this place is parking; can be tricky to find so be patient.

  • Sigal Witkin

Love this boutique cinema, which does a lot for the community, especially for the Jewish community. I enjoy their festivals and the different special programs. The magnificent job that they have done to renovate the building and make it include 10 different cinemas is outstanding. It is very personable and almost always, you bump into someone you know. The most heymisha Cinema in melbourne.

  • Prudenza

Its atmospheres and areas are wow and welcoming..quite opposite to its appearances outside ;) Most staff were very friendly and greatly helpful. Some made very nice beverages. I love the special offer on Tuesdays. The movie sessions displaying above the bar appeared slowly but went so fast, so that wasn't useful and hard to see. Thankfully its website is effective :)

  • Shell Belle

Lovely independent cinema. Great ‘classic’ old features with period details like stained glass etc. Booked online which was easy. Snack bar with all the classics (popcorn, choc tops etc) was good with alcoholic beverages if desired. Seats were okay but I wouldn’t want to see a long movie as I was starting to feel a little uncomfortable by the end.

  • Philip Bogle

Went to the classic today to watch the recent James Bond movie. Great cinema and experience. I accidentally dropped my key to my house in the cinema. I contacted the cinema and a fantastic staff member found it and actually dropped it in our letter box later in the day. You can’t ask for better customer service than that. Very happy

  • Stephen Simmons

Very nice! Seats were comfortable, sound and picture quality first rate. The movie we saw was a brilliant Australian film titled Some Happy Day. Well worth the price of the ticket and good to see a local cinema supporting our movies. And besides the popcorn and ice creams they served alcohol. Great atmosphere I would highly recommend.

  • Freya Beth Moores-Wilson

Amazing and beautiful interior with luxury level seating within cinemas. The price for food and drink is more high end but when you look around at the gorgeous cinema it’s well worth it. The screens are huge with quality sound and the food and drink is awesome! Tickets were only $10 which made the price of the food even more worth it

  • Mindaugas Jurgelis

My fave cinema in Melbourne (so far) that offers v good ticket prices to its members. Great atmosphere and a very strong selection of quality movies. The chairs are comfy and the cinemas kept cool. Plus, the area (Elsternwick) is great to grab a bite afterwards. The snacks are expensive as hell but what are you going to do.

  • Monique Campos

I like the classic because is convenient to me, very close to my place, it’s hard to find a park depending on the time you get there. Lately the sound on the rooms are a bit off, so it’s a bit disappointing. I like the food options there but for the past 4 times I went there the choc tops weren’t fresh, the cone was soggy.

  • shrey chhaiya

it's good place and also have cafe so can eat or take drink from there. cinama screen is also good. normally you can go to watch movies with less amount of money. when i went to see movie, the show timing was 9-15 and entry started at 9-30. so it was delay, maybe some technical issues or whatever. rest it was good cinama.

  • Damian Newton

While at times I do enjoy the technical sophistication of it's larger competitors, the vibe and authentic feel of The Classic in Elsternwick always brings me back. The fact that it's licensed, with a rooftop bar, and a great selection of food and drink, ensures that a great movie experience will be had each & every time.

  • tlinn

Childhood cinema. Love this place, though I would like to note that their popcorn of late has been rather underwhelming and cold, and I miss their signature and classic choc tops that they had previously sold, which have since been replaced with Bulla. If anyone from the Classic is reading this, please take note ;)

  • Jenny Boymal

We held a party for my 11 year old son at the Classic Cinema - would highly recommend it! It was so easy to deal with Luke! The price was seriously affordable - parties can really get out of control with extra charges. My son loved it and the staff were wonderful! Would highly recommend this venue for kids parties.

  • Eleanor King

I live near here so go quite often. Everything is fabulous. Great staff and food. Especially the toasties. But the only problem I have is the ballrooms. They don't fit in with rest of the theater. Who paints a bathroom black? They are dingy and grungy and generally always dirty. They need to be redone!!!!

  • Devorah Veiner

Great cinema. Good chance of finding free parking. Very good selection of arthouse films. Plenty of specials events like Q&A with directors, film festivals and rooftop cinema (weather permitting). Nice foyer and outdoors sitting. Good coffee and plenty of eateries in close proximity. Highly recommended!

  • Keith ODERBERG

Old cinema which tries really hard and successfully to reproduce the suburban cinemas of the 50's and 60's. Good snack shop, most of the best movies around. As with most cinemas the audio can be terrifyingly loud. Please stop this. Good parking in the street and at the nearby railway station carpark.

  • Holly R

A lovely cinema with a unique atmosphere. Very well located, right across the road from Elsternwick train station and a tram stop. The screens themselves have nice comfy seats. The tickets are fairly priced, however the food is quite expensive and as such I can’t afford to visit as often as I’d like.

  • Nicklas Lindewald

Got caught, sent 12 year old and friend with cash there. Daughter came back on scooter, don't take cash. I cycled back with her, sold out for two hours. Be nice if staff could be a bit more helpful with young people, how about asking if they want to see top gun as already sold out and problem solved?

  • Itamar Naftaly

Cinema is wonderful. Smaller than your usual cinema but still large enough to hold a number of different sized cinemas. My favourite is number 2, a small, relaxing and comfy cinema. Just like feeling you're at home watching movies. Popcorn has always been fresh and tasty. Great value.

  • Daniel Klein

Great cinema with Festivals, first run films, classic films and just films you don't find elsewhere. They have a rooftop, run late evening movies, have great snack and drinks on offer. This is what cinema used to be like and should be more of today. Highly recommended.

  • Tristan Jones

Very nice old school feel to this place, free comedy show every Wednesday, (still require tickets). Been to the comedy night 5 or 6 times now and Sal is 10/10 every time. You are able to donate through paywave or cash to help keep this fantastic evening running.

  • Kurt Horne

Simply the best place in Melbourne for independent cinema, bursting with charm and great curation of movies new and classic. I try to go every week, get a membership if you can, the tickets are such great value! Keep up the great work, Classic and Lido Cinema's!

  • Mannuel Goldberg

Very upset that Classic Cinemas only want to accept 'Cards'and not cash? This will impact on older people and people who carry/ have only 'Cash?Remember 'Cash is king'and by the Classic Cinemas doing this they are disadvantaged their loyal customers and alike!

  • H apples

The foyer is wonderful. Like the cinemas of the past. It has a bar and lots of seating. You can happily meet here for a drink with friands so its not just for waiting for a movie to begin. The various cinemas have comfortable seating. The staff are nice too.

  • Rosemary Swindells

This Gorgeous Old Cinema is such a fab way to go to the Movie's Decor inside is lovely .This Cinema has a charm of it's own Also nice Cafe's nearby The one next door is nice They do snacks there and have booths to sit in to eat there …

  • Dick Aspel

Simply love the new seats and the grading. Great choice of movies and every cinema as good as Gold Class for half the price. My only gripe is crisps and popcorn- do you really need to sell them-there are plenty of other less noisy and distracting munchies.

  • Brad Johnston

Bar staff need better training. 15 minutes to make 2 not overly complicated cocktails and then receiving one which was only half full, by that time had to rush into the movie to not miss the beginning. Lovely cinema thought 5 stars for the cinema itself.

  • victor lara

So disappointing... everything went perfect when watching today "the good boss" until, while watching the credits at the end of the movie and reflecting on the strong message of the movie they just cut the credits and turn on the lights. It

  • Sussan Fitzgerald

Great quality cinema with lots to do and even a rooftop bar and outside cinema . They are great at hosting events and even for your birthday. One of their even hosting options is to book a cinema entirely for playing video games. The cinema

Came to watch Everyone's Oma in Cinema 6, 6pm Sunday night. Loved the movie, loved the old world charm and only 3 people in that cinema. Sadly there was scattered popcorn everywhere, floors and chairs when we entered. People can be so

  • Piyush Singh

Wow what an experience. Rooftop cinema was an amazing experience. Must try once , do remember to take your warm cloth and even small blanket is a good idea. They won’t provide there , so be prepared specially if going in cold weather.

  • Nath Merry

Beautiful cinemas. Attended to see a comedy stand up and was pleasantly surprised by how warm and cozy the venue was, as well as classy. Staff were all very friendly and overall one of the best cinemas I’ve ever visited.

  • Janet A

Fab, my first time there. I loved the small theatre and comfy seating. Temperature and sound volume were just right. Staff were friendly and helpful. Great range of snacks on offer - popcorn buttery and not too salty.

  • Steve Hunter

Saw The Banshees Of Inisherin written/directed by Martin McDonagh & starring Colin Farrel, Brendan Gleeson and Kerry Condon. Laugh out loud funny one minute; moving, shocking and even brutal at other times. Superb

  • Amanda Lenny

Was looking for a cinema that does birthday parties. Tried booking through Carla but she didn’t want to take calls and was very vague on email. So we booked with Palace cinemas in Brighton. They were fantastic.

  • Alison W

Great movie selection, really friendly staff and really nice selection of drinks. But a large sprite and a bottle of water is FOURTEEN DOLLARS. I get the cinema needs to make a profit but that is insane.

  • Sabrina Potter

The cinema itself is actually really nice and it felt like you were going back in time. The seats did need a bit of a scrub as a few of them had gum and dried goo on it. They were comfortable though.

  • Jak Grimm

Classic Rooftop - excellent! Seated in captain's chairs, with headphones. It was great watching the movie, but just wonderful to watch the light cloud cover churning and rolling. Highly recommended.

  • Paul R

Good cinema. The membership is great value. On Tuesdays there are $12 movies, $8 if you are a member. Sometimes has some older movies. Rooftop bar is also nice and there is a rooftop cinema.

  • Diren Gokal

I just keep coming back. I hope they get an atmos theatre. But for overall experience - great screen, sound, seats, food and drink. With a really great set of restaurant options around it.

  • Reuben McCristal

I accidentally booked my tickets for the wrong day but the staff there very kindly allowed me to change the booking for the correct day for free even though it was completely my fault.

  • Brianna Vickers

Intimate cinema experience with wide, comfortable velour seats. I saw "How To Please A Woman" on cheap Tuesday for $12. Highly recommend this Aussie film and this great local cinema!

  • Fred Jameson

Amazing cinema, great interiors, very close to public transport. Amazing staff and brilliant menu of food and beverages. A delightful experience to royalty in watching movies here.

  • Mark Nussy

Good cinemas with comfortable seating and comfortable places to sit before and after the movie. Parking is a little difficult but conveniently located near a train and bus station

  • Heather

Below average I attended the Classic cinema Elsternwick this afternoon and cinema four was the dirtiest cinema I have ever been in. Our seats were so stained that we felt

  • Claire F

My local childhood cinema, now split into lots of smaller cinemas, usually a good range of movies, but can be very busy on the weekend, especially on Sunday afternoons.

  • Indiana Catalina

Beautiful cinema, with an all-inclusive atmosphere. Signs posted around the venue stating it is a safe space for all walks of life. The popcorn is also always delish!

  • Harris Beats Frankou

The best the snacks options compared to most cinemas, the drinks, chocalate coffees, the roof! Friendly staff well trained. The cheap nights. The best place in town.

  • Eva Franklyn

Great little cinema. Very groovy and retro with great prices! Go Tuesday for $12 tickets. Just be aware that the ads take forever! Rock up at least 10 minutes late.

  • Douglas Peart

Was Very dirty, uncleaned from the previous showing, couldn't sit in our seats because of popcorn, Empty bottles and wrappers everywhere, last time, won't be back

  • Wendy Bridges

I go to the Classic all the time. Booking is easy online, the refreshment bar is great, and many cinemas give you a lot of choice of film. It's a popular place.

  • Caitlynn Z

Awesome to have a rooftop place, just very cold at night the heaters can't get to the middle seated people. The audio of rooftop could do an upgrade. …

  • Victor Appelboom

Great smaller complex vibe. Good variety of food n drink options to buy. Cinema seats are comfortable. Staff are friendly and helpful. Parking is convenient.
