The Gene Siskel Film Center is a fantastic cinema that offers a unique and diverse selection of films. Their programming includes independent and foreign films, documentaries, and retrospectives, making it a great place to discover new and exciting movies. The theater itself is clean and modern, with comfortable seating and good sound and picture quality. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and they're always happy to help you choose a movie or answer any questions you may have. The only downside is that the prices can be a bit high, but it's worth it for the quality of the films and the experience. Overall, if you're a film lover or just looking for something different to watch, the Gene Siskel Film Center is definitely worth checking out. I give it 4 stars!
I was really happy to find this place! It’s great to have an arthouse theater right downtown closer to where I live. This was the only place I could find a showing of the new Miyazaki film in Japanese, too. The theater itself was very clean. No sticky floors when you walk around like at AMC. They sell concessions there too for pretty low prices. The screening rooms are on the smaller side, which makes for a more intimate experience. I recommend buying your tickets in advance since there are not very many seats.
Spend - Wonderful experience of film "War at Home," and a panel discussion. Clean and spacious facility. Small theater good for discussions. Plenty of room where you can meet with a group before or after your film. Staff were great and resourceful. Nice selection of snacks, drinks, and popcorn. Reasonably priced for a theater and a beautiful facility. My Raisinets were kind of old though (that is my only critique.) Make this your next date night. Give me a thumbs up if you found my review helpful.
Glad to have a spot where limited releases films are shown! Very clean cinema. In the midst of busy State Street. The only reason not 5 starts is they didn’t have concessions - I feel that’s half the fun of a movie… even a box of candy and pop ! maybe cause of Covid? But also I did not find the chairs comfortable. They are soft chairs BUT the back is firm straight , maybe they were so new they didn’t have much “give”. They did lean back , but you had to force it. Great sound! Crisp bold Dolby
Outstanding venue and location. The seats are not as comfortable as I might have liked, but it was a great experience. There are no obstructions to the screen, the audio/sound reinforcement/Dobly is great and the assembled audience seems to be conscientious, respectful and totally relaxed. The lobby is a nice, moderately sized area with chairs and tables when you can enjoy a snack, buy paraphernalia and engage others. Great place to see any movie, let alone first run or Indies.
This is one of the good theaters that show documentaries and movies that are meant to watch. This last time we came to see brimstone and glory and we won't have seen the documentary anywhere else. The place is welcoming. They have a cafeteria and chairs to relax before or after the movie. There are two screens and the chairs are comfortable. They also offer discounted parking near by. Will come and see more movies or documentaries.
So fun and quaint. The seats are comfortable and the popcorn doesnt cost $37 for a small, I think it was $8 for a large box of pop corn. Crazy right? I got a mocha for the movie for $4 and she made it on the spot and poured it into a bathtub sized to-go cup. It was awesome. Theater quality was great and the movie line ups are very good. This will be an ongoing date night for my wife and I.
Obviously the main appeal here is that they show movies that you aren't going to find at other theaters. Coming here was a great experience overall. The seats, although not flashy, were comfortable enough, and drinks were not particularly overpriced. The bartender and host were both corteous and professional, and it was extremely enjoyable viewing original art while in the lobby.
This theater is run by the School of the Art Institute and is exactly what you would imagine from that institution. Lots of good contemporary, foreign, experimental, and classic films and documentaries. Some of the movies are overrated and the artist programs are hit of miss either very inspiring or pretentious and dull. Overall this is a reasonably priced small upscale theater.
Great for those rare and hard to find art films. The staff can be a bit off putting and snotty. I am not sure if it is because they are poorly managed, or because they are apathetic. The popcorn it terrible. It is dry and way over priced. Be sure to get to the box office earlier on the weekends and for limited runs, as tickets go fast, and the theaters (only 2) are small.
I saw Fleabag here and the place is really nice. The bathrooms were clean, even with the crowds Fleabag brought, and the seats were decently comfortable. The staff was very friendly and although the sound system in the theater didn't really compare to a regular movie theater I will be looking out for more international movies to watch here!
Been there 3Xs!! It's a small nice size room. Very comfortable clean warm seating room. Bathrms clean. People are polite and respectful to others. Prices are high for refreshments as usual. They serve wine not sure if allowed in theater?? All the movies I've seen have been amazing!! Will diffinently be returning with other friends!! …
The only cinema in downtown Chicago that shows indie films but their selections are just okay most of the time. I know the local communities matter but there just aren’t enough international films, maybe because it’s not that of a independent cinema. And their ticket staff will scold you if you forgot to put on mask before going in.
I really enjoyed the inside! Interesting to have a theater on the second floor. I like the cafe style tables, and the theater itself have very comfortable seating. The only downside is that the movie screening rooms are on the smaller side...but I enjoy the variety in films offered here! A great spot to visit!!
Great location and is constructed with the purpose of watching movies, I was there for the black Harvest Film Festival and had a wonderful group discussion or the panel of Summer Chicago's leading art patrons. I definitely plan to go back because they have quite a repertoire of film choices
Good theater with fantastic programming. A must-visit for anyone who cares about film. Keep in mind that film reels of older movies aren't always going to be in the best quality, but the opportunity to see those movies on the big screen decades after they were in theaters is well worth it.
Attended opening night for the Harvest Festival. Very nice theater. Comfortable seats, roomy enough so you don't feel confined. Great acoustic, no problems hearing or seeing the film. Nice concession stand and space with tables and chairs for snacking. The theater was clean and sanitized.
We went there during persian festival movies. The location has no parking cause it’s in the middle of down town. The seats were not based on numbers, it was first come first served. The sound system was good. The people working there were nice and polite.
Attended the Black Harvest Film Festival this year and it was simply wonderful. I seldom eat popcorn but for some reason I couldn't stop eating the popcorn there. I like the idea that they keep the ladies bathrooms clean too no matter how busy it gets.
Great selection of first-run foreign and art films that you won't find anywhere else, along with some repertory fare. The employees are efficient and helpful. It's very clean inside. Convenient location (right off an El stop) in downtown Chicago.
theater's are small, but the seating is close. Comfy seats but not stadium seating. But you can still see the screen irregardless. Great off-the-map movies, documentaries, foreign films, and experimental films no one else would have except
One of a kind. This is a wonderfully curated movie house. The very definition of a Art House theater. You cannot see the movies that they show here anyplace else. Foreign films, documentary films, independent films, classic Hollywood etc.
This was a great theater to stop in for our only night in Chicago. We watched the Maya Angelou documentary and were welcomed warmly with food provided by community partners. Overall it was a comfortable and high quality cinema experience.
Update and afterthoughts: This was a new online venture for the Black Harvest & Gene Siskel center because of the pandemic. Black Harvest is usually in-theater, but we couldn't go inside. I paid for the movie "Outside story" a few weeks
A great place in the middle of the Loop to catch interesting and unique films. Clean and spacious theaters with excellent projection and color; sound quality is not a problem at all. Lots of areas for post-viewing receptions or just
I love the Gene Siskel Film Center, especially their festivals like the European Union Film Festival. Tickets and concessions are reasonably-priced. Staff is always friendly. It's definitely a community that you want to be part of!
About the nicest place to see top movies. You can join and it’s a great value. I’m not a movie geek myself but my wife is and she always leaves here with a smile on her face. Happy wife, happy life. And by the way water is FREE!!!
Small theatre that showcases unique films that you won't see in the bigger theatres. This place is close to several parking garages, but the best way is on the train Lake/state stops. It's across the Chicago theatre.
If you love documentaries and independent film this is the place for you. Tickets are $12, great concession stand with beer and wine. They have a great Film Festival during the summer, the Black Harvest Film Fest.
This is a really great place and I love what they do. They screen really great independent and foreign films, and they screen the occasional classic film! The sound quality, screen size, and seating are great.
Fun! Saw the film of Fleabag. Even our back row seats were close enough to see the whole screen. Also a nice incline so I could see over the tall people in front of me. My tall husband had enough leg room too.
My favorite place to see independent films and right in the heart of Chicago. They also sell some alcoholic beverages which is nice. Crowd is always respectful and nice. Atmosphere is classy and not stuffy.
I like the selection of these movies. The place has a nice view. The snacks are ni e, hope they could have bigger popcorns. The theater is big and with high sound quality. Seats were normal comfortable.
This theatre shows many of the finest films including many international selections. The EU Film Fest is one of the highlights of Chicago cinema each year. Keep the Bruno Dumont films coming!!!
The Gene Siskel Film Center is a cinephile's paradise. I appreciate the opportunity to watch so many classic, independent, and international movies that rarely make their way to theater chains.
I love this place! I say in on a discussion with a film maker and it was wonderful! Large enough yet intimate with great customer service. I will be looking into a membership!
My genes do not like the Gene Siskel Film Center. It's the same smell throughout the years in various events. Shockingly, it's the only bldg with this common area smell.
The movie theater was amazing... Great picture and sound. They always have a very interesting selection of movies. The sound quality is great from all corners!
Tried to see Aftersun on a Monday, but it was sold out. Really? Aftersun? Either the screening room is a shoe box or this theater needs to add more showtimes.
I have been here with my family a couple of times, and it was wonderful! First of all, the location is fabulous. Across the street is the Chicago Theater
This theater shows some great films, more seats in theater 1 than theater 2, but both are good screens to see something.
Was here for Industry days and a screen for Chicago International Film Festival. Great environment and wonderful staff
the main cinematic institution in Chicago. top curation, in terms of both new releases and old/recent must-rewatches.
nice seats alternative programming for movies you can't see anywhere else, no snacks or drinks for sale
Wonderful theater. We saw Dos Estaciones there. A beautiful movie. Very nice and comfortable seats.
I had a great time. I went to see the movie "Stony Island" and met Gene Siskel. It was great!
New seats! Same wonderful atmosphere! I just love the staff! Follow them on IG @filmcenter
Great movies. Clean theaters with comfy seats. Nice waiting area overlooking State St.
The theatre was rather warm but I enjoyed the film and would definitely go back.
No frills, movie center. showing classics and independent films.
