I was shocked to see this place sell egg based custard and milk based desserts in little or no refrigeration on a 37 degree day! At 2pm I ordered 2 desserts with a friend. Both desserts (cream, milk and egg based) came out not firm, I knew something wasn't right. As I cut into it the dessert was curdeled and warm and then I realised that these had been sitting with little or no refrigeration. I took them back and the staff member got a new lot from the kitchen refrigerator. When leaving we saw the Danish pastries on a shelf facing the window in a tray that has custard inside them in no refrigeration format again it's a 37 degree day! Someone is going to get severe food poisoning if the place doesn't practice food hygiene practices especially in food handling and storage. As a Food Technologist, I wouldn't be recommending eating here until they lift there game. There is no excuse for not abiding with Victorian Food Standards. To the owner - Fix your air conditioning unit for keeping the cafe cool and your staff can work in a more comfortable environment.
I used to love this place. But all changed when i purchased a vanilla slice. The pastry was well over cooked almost burnt which left a very unpleasant taste in my mouth. In a sympathetic mood i walked in to make them aware of this. The lady kept denying what i explained and just did not want to listen AT ALL!!! Made me feel like a fool. Constantly telling me "people love this no one complain it meant to be crispy". Before i had a chance to show her the remains of the over cooked pastry, she got me so upset i had to leave. I Walked back in and placed the over cooked pastry on the counter and said "show the chef". This little issue could of humanly been resolved if only the lady (who i believe is the owner) was more open minded. EXTREMELY BAD customer service. As a regular i am very disappointed. Not that they care but i will never return.
We visited after a slow start to the morning and a craving for some baked goods. The window display caught our attention immediately with the delicious offerings. We got coffees, a cruffin (croissant x muffin), and a fruit tart. My wife got a takeaway cinnamon scroll which she says was very tasty. The "manual jukebox" sign gave me a good chuckle (the sign suggested speaking with one of the team, who could play a song on request), and was a nice reminder to engage in conversation! Coffee and milk were a little burnt but otherwise it was a pleasant morning stop.
I walked pass here on the way to Melbourne park. I bought 2 Portuguese tarts and 1 escargot and 1 almond croissant. The Portuguese tarts are bad, the pastry is not flaky and crispy at all. The filling is not good. But the price is $4.5. The escargot is good, my friends are that and he said it’s good. I ate the almond croissant, it’s ok. The staff who took the order seemed she could not understand English or not was familiar with any of the pastries that sold there. I don’t think I will come back, there are so many better ones around the town.
I've ordered a few things from Almost French over the years and they've all been great - including the lobster roll, Cornish pasty, chocolate eclair, almond croissant, ham and cheese croissant, apple danish, carrot cake, and the almond-pear tart. Plus, if you're looking to buy a largeish cake/tart on Swan St - and are willing to spend a little extra than Coles but not as much as Messina - then look no further! It is, indeed, almost French.
I'm French, been living in Sydney for a year, tried many bakeries and never found croissants as good as back home. Well this weekend I stumbled on this cute patisserie in Richmond and thought I would give it a shot. First bite and I was filled of happiness at the long missed taste of a perfectly baked croisant. They definitely made my day, chocolate croissant and almond croissant were authentic, approved by a French person :)
We were in search of almond croissants in Melbourne nearby to MCG. Found this place. The almond croissants here were excellent.. Almond filled, not just almonds sprinkled on top.. Coffee was good also.. We were so pleased with the croissants that we tried some other patisseries.. Also excellent..The place has a laid back feel, relaxed and friendly.. Could easily become a favourite place.
I've been a regular at Almost French since it opened many years ago. The current owners are the best so far and have really improved on everything. Coffee is consistently good and the croissants are even better than what you get in France. Owner Julie is warm and hospitable. As are all her staff. This is my go to cafe on Swan St. Reasonably priced too.
The best pastries, especially croissants, in Richmond area!

I hope you take this as constructive criticism, because I can appreciate you’re clearly understaffed. But burning my croissant until it’s black and then putting it in a takeaway container hoping I wouldn’t check is very poor service. Also, not a great look letting an older white male cut in line in front of 5 women clearly waiting. Not impressed.
Stopped by for breakfast on a whim and was not disappointed. The friendly staff offer some incredible pastries and the toasted french sandwiches are amazing. Coffee and tea was high quality and the pricing was fair and represents great value. Next time I'm in Richmond I'll definitely be heading back to sample some other options.
Tried the flourless orange cake slice and enjoyed it. Although it wasn’t the freshest cake I’ve had, the prices are affordable and the service is warm and friendly! I will be back to try other sweets and pastries :)

I don't live in Richmond but whenever we are nearby this is the cafe I have to visit. It's my absolute favourite for a coffee in Richmond. The cakes are great and so are the different breads. Everything is made in their kitchen at the back. The service is always fast and friendly. Great cafe and my family love it too.
The staff in here are incredibly friendly and without doubt they have the best Almond Croissants in the whole of Australia (and England). Having moved to Melbourne 8 months ago we have tried most coffee shops on swan street and the CBD to try and find a good almond croissant. None even come close!
I have been coming here for almost 10 years! The pastries are absolutely worth the trip, Portuguese tarts best in Melbourne, almond croissants at $4.50 the best you’ll find locally. Staff super friendly and the decor suits its retro feel... thanks for serving us fantastic food all these years!
The most Beautiful tasty Danish pastries and what about the Croissants Incredible. And so is the Coffee. I'll be back

Definitely not almost French, 100% French by my standards, and I am French. Today I bought all their coffee eclairs, and oh boy! What a delight! I haven’t had a so good one in years, and definitely not outside of France. 10/10 ❤️ …
It's a lovely quaint place to sit and have a quiet lunch/snack. Great staff. Great service. And best of all great foods. Lovely to find this in such a busy bustling suburb of Melbourne. No pretences and good honest food.
Almost French Patisserie delivered a birthday cake to a friend today at late notice. Service was excellent and staff went out of their way to accommodate my request. The cake was exquisite. Thank you so much …
Pleasant young staff.... reasonable prices....but. Forgot cake order to bring to table. We sat for more than an hour...should have cleaned up used plates, and asked if anything else required.
Unfortunately, the croissants and cinnamon rolls were heavy and dry. I’m not convinced that they were made on the day. Just not well made. Didn’t feel Almost French, just Barely French.
Really, really good food. Huge sandwiches packed on site with very tasty ingredients. Great cheese cake( the others looked as good), I had. Coffee is good. Will definitely go back.
The food was priced well and really delicious. We had three different items for.breakfast and each person truly enjoyed their meal. The staff were friendly and attentive.
Lovely little place. The pastries are so good and very decently priced. The people that work there are very kind. Cinamom roll and the danish pastries are my fave ❤
Almost French Patisserie deleivered a total of 200+ chocolate eclairs for our school event. The students loved them, and many were requesting seconds. Thank you
Great little find. We had a relaxed afternoon tea break with croissants and iced lattes. Coffee was strong and croissants tasty. Delightful.
Nice place on a cold Sunday afternoon, but was hit and miss with the coffee. Ordered 2 latte, 1 was perfect the other was at best luke warm.
Those flourless cheecakes are amazing. The orange cake is divine as well. Coffee is great. I strongly recommend it
Service was lovely, but coffee was unfortunately burnt and undrinkable. Brekkie muffin was average at best.
Quality baked goods at reasonable prices. They specially made a vanilla slice for me which was a huge hit.
Very nice place, scrumptious delightful little cakes, pies, slices and bread. Service was also quite nice.
This almond croissant is amazing! Would have been better if they had warm it up but still pretty good.
Great cakes and smooth coffee... Super friendly staff... Look forward to coming back again
Borrowed a book from their library, had a pastry and coffee...perfect relaxing day out.
Great range of French delights, seating inside or out. The coffee is very good.
Lots of French Patisserie can be chosen at a reasonable price.
A nice place for coffee. Coffee not bad either
Amazing rainbow cake! Incredible chef.
