I researched a book online and wanted to buy it in store. Unfortunately they did not have the book in store so I had to order it and paid to have it delivered to my home address 6km from CBD, since I don't go to the city often. It turned out the staff ordered me the wrong book so I had to go to local post office to have it mailed back to the CBD store. The store manager then explained I would not get reimbursed for the hassle or cost of sending the wrong book back to them. She did says that I would get free delivery on the correct book. I don't consider that an offer. I think as a client you should not have to be out of pocket for a mistake the business make. It was not a matter of the money, more of a customer service principle. They could at least offered a store credit but they did not. I run a business myself and know that I would not make my client pay for any of my business stuff up. Next time I will use Amazon again.
A great night looking at all the books and stationery, when something on the floor catches my eye. A small piece of "tester" paper, used by someone to try out a nice pen, is lying by my feet, folded once. I notice it says, "Pick up". How odd, I think, and decide that the responsible thing to do is to obey the instruction. I bend down and grasp the mysterious paper, and of course my curiosity takes over - presumably there must be something written on the inside? I unfold it, hesitantly, catching sight of scrawled letters on the inside. I reorient the paper and look at the hastily scribbled message, and read the surprising words of wisdom left for me by another random shopper, possibly in their teens: "Your mum gay" (sic). I laughed heartily for quite a while before refolding the paper and replacing it on the floor to bring similar joy to another patron. 10/10 store. Would shop there again.
I do quite like this bookstore. The literary section is reasonable, and sometimes has some real masterpieces. I would say that if you are new to world literature, then you could do worse to buy ten or twenty books here. Eco, Vargas Llosa, Camus, Bolaño - it’s all here. Good stuff! The Australian literature section is ok. I went there the day the Miles Franklin literary award long list was announced and they only had like three. Oops. Cooking section is ok but needs a bit more focus. Hard to find anything as it’s, you know, partially by cuisine partially by author name. History is alright. Not too bad, but not too great. Not too great. Overall, solid. Staff are nice enough but I don’t need their help so I couldn’t really say. Store itself is clean. Don’t always get reception which is odd? Needs a cafe I think. Somewhere to settle down and relax with my new book.
I don’t even want to give a 1 star. The customer service is really bad that I would never want to buy a book there. I’m one of the customer, who used to buy books from there and this old lady just came up to me and she just took the manga really rudely, saying, “This is not a library! You’re not supposed to be reading and banding it.” Obviously, people would read it through before they buy it and that is why there’re chairs around. Because there were people sitting on the chair READING the books, I couldn’t find any spots where I can sit so I just sat anywhere and the old lady was like “They were hiding so they could read a manga!” If we were hiding why were we even there? She was being racist as well and told an Asian lady to kick us out but the Asian worker was being nice to us. Anyway, the customer service is really bad and I hope it improves. Thanks.
I have spent thousands on books at this store but won't be returning now. I will go now to Booktopia who are always cheaper. I am medically exempt and carry a medical certificate to prove it. I recently went into this store like I have doing for years (even during lockdowns) and encountered the worst customer service. When I took my book to the counter I was asked about mask I said I was medically exempt as I had done so many times with no issues. The lady proceeded to take a giant step backwards so she was against the wall behind her and told me to put the book on the counter and step back. She embarrassed and humiliated me in front of the other customers in the line and also the other 2 staff that was serving for having a medical condition that exempts me from wearing a mask. I tried emailing the Brisbane email about what happened and I was ignored.
TLDR: Great staff, don't order in books, mobility access around the corner in some office building The five stars given are purely for the great staff here at Dymocks Brisbane City. They are pretty rad, and always able to help you with your queries. They have a great range of books to browse and I often come away with a purchase or two. If they do not have a book in stock, don't bother about ordering as this is where I think they fall short - but I guess this isn't really about this store in particular and more of a general Dymocks thing. Disability access to the first floor is not through the main entrance (Albert St) but through an entrance on Elizabeth St. It can be a little tricky to find if you don't know what you are looking for, so if you are having trouble, ask the staff at the ground level counter and they will show you.
I rang inquiring about buying a book in the morning when I though the staff would be able to more easily help. A man answered and was very abrupt. He looked up my book for me and told me it wasn't in stock. When I asked if he could check the other stores for me he instead interrupted me to answer a personal phone call. He then informed me that he could look up the other stores, but he was out the back and that I should just call up Chermside or Indooroopilly myself, rather than walking out the front to check for me. I am disgusted with the level of service I received considering how simple my request was and given that it was first thing in the morning when no customers would have been around.
I love dymmocks Brisbane! big selection of books and especially great selection of manga ^.^ There's a very kind and helpful staff member there, her name is "kaycee", she's very friendly. If there's a certain manga that's not in stock she double check the shelf which is very nice of her. She even call's the stock warehouse and runs the process with me to let me know around the processing time frame if I ordered a book there which is such a pleasant service. She's passionate at what she does so I highly recommend her! 10/10 service. Thank you kaycee for making my visit there always a pleasant one. My favourite dymmocks book store is Brisbane City!
The downstairs section is great for quick grabs and novelty gifts. There is a section before the escalator going upstairs where you can find recommended reads and usually there are some you could get into. I am used to larger book stores in the states but this is by far the largest you will find around Brisbane and their website even says it is the largest in QLD. The staff is very helpful and usually quick to find what you are looking for. If you are looking for the largest selection you can find without shopping online this is the place to go.
Had a fantastic experience at this particular Dymocks. Their selection is great and service amazing. I went on the day that Jocko Willink was in town for a book signing and although there were more than 200 people in the store the staff handled the situation professionally and tried their best to expedite the signing process. They even offered to get customers books signed and have them pick them up after the event or the next day.
With the demise of the only other decent book retailer in Brisbane (Folio Books), Dymocks is now the only real place for booklovers to visit in Brisbane. New store not quite as well laid out as at their previous location, but I can spend hours in here. Staff are also very helpful when it comes to special orders.
Have been looking for a specific book that they say they have but when I went in store last month they did not I then check a week or so ago and they still had not restocked but I am giving it a three stars because they do have a good amount of other books to choose from.
Small and with a below average selection of classic letterature. Some of the classics can only be found on the Penguin prints which are ok but not ideal as presents. The place is ok but the shop configuration is all over the place. Really confusing layout. Disappointing.
New place is more specious and everything is available in same floor, thought it's is underground floor, because of this it's difficult to find this shop. Apart from this, it's nice shop and can say Readers paradise, almost all books from world is available.
This is just our favourite bookshop. I feel like its had a bit of a downgrade in size, but there is still a wonderful collection of books, music and dvd's to choose from. The staff are very knowledgeable and it's a welcoming place for kids too. Go Dymocks!
Interesting collection of books, plenty to brouse around at. Picked up some lovely books for my father's interests and found some new books for myself too!! Don't forget to bring your own bag to take home your new books!!
A bit expensive, but all-in-all, it has something for everyone. I love the Groucho Marx quote on the wall as you go up the escalator. 'Outside of a book, a dog is a man's best friend. Inside a dog it's too dark to read.'
Love this place. A bit crowded, bookshelves groaning with the weight of lots and lots of books - just the way a bookshop should be imo. Great place to browse and buy with staff who seem to know where everything is.
lovely new store location in the CBD with an extensive collection of books and stationery. staff was super friendly and helpful that I could easily find the goods that I wanted. Will definitely visit more
This store has a large array of books ranging for lover's of many titles. Today I looked at many books. Not planning on buying anything I left empty handed. Next time I will return with a shopping list.
A very neat and organised layout with a great range and selection. Personally I think the philosophy and psychology sections are a bit small, however, the classics section is positively overflowing.
Dymocks flagship Brisbane store. Has everything you would expect from a large book store, plus various other items like nice stationary and vaguely-book-or-literature-related gifts and things.
Beautiful book store! Book shops always are enticing with many worlds, situations and things to learn and experience in them. This store is no different! Lovely layout and lots of selection.
Lovely shop, with heaps of books and very friendly and helpful staff. I also like the downstairs section with lots of things to buy that aren't books. It's really conveniently located too
Great collection of books in this store!! The staff are very friendly and very helpful. Just don't forget to bring in your Dymocks Card to get a discount for this year's XMas!! …
Awesome bookshop with a massive range spread over two floors. Only negative was the exit lift took nearly 10 minutes to arrive and were weren't allowed to walk down the broken escalator
My favourite book store in Brisbane! The whole store emits a lovely glow, a feeling that can only be felt in the presence of so many books. Possibly my favourite store in this city!
This is one of the biggest bookshops I've seen of late. Well stocked and happy to price match. It was good to see the large selection of Manga. It's upstairs and easy to miss.
Great knowledgeable staff, plenty of places to sit, relax and turn some pages. Layout and selection was impressive, price was not cheapest I found but one-stop shop justified.
Good selection of kids and general readings. Limited supply of IT and tech books. Make sense, right? Gift and stationery at ground floor. Few nice fountain pen, too
They have a good selection of books and very helpful staff. One of them helped me find a book that I was looking for, and I didn't even initiate asking for help.
Great book store - lots of variety and choice. Has a small frontage downstairs, but it's a lot bigger upstairs. Located in a great spot just off Queen St Mall.
Vast ranges of books for all ages and interests. They have chairs and encourage you to really explore a book. Their stationary shop downstairs is such a treat.
Large bookstore with great selection of books. Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. The range of travel books and maps far exceeded my expectations.
Always drop into this store.Have a great range of biography's of musicians and movie actors .Also a comprehensive range of titles to satisfy all tastes .
A great bookstore with an excellent range. Staff are incredibly knowledgeable and happy to go the extra mile to order in books that are not in stocks.
The staff were helpful. Wide selection of books of varying varieties. The shop is a little difficult to find otherwise it's a very pleasant book shop.
Amazing selection of graphic novels, always managing to bring in new stock. Also love the selection of stationary they have on the lower level.
This place is so good, there were people standing outside waiting for them to open.. on a weekday! I love the variety of books here …
Neatly organised categories and assortment of books within, spacious aisles, friendly staff are a few things that bring me back to this store.
Brilliant section of books from fantasy customer top 101 selection, to self help for "dummies" books. Lovely mugs, gift baskets, etc.
Great range of books. If you still love the feel of real paper books and exploring different genre styles this is well worth a visit
One of the best book shops around. Lucky to have such an extensive range with ability to order whatever you need. My go to.
Very good range of books, cards and papers. There is a lift for wheelchair access as the shop is on the lower level.
Excellent range of lots of books and they can order in something specifically for you if its not in stock
Lovely staff. Very helpful when requesting a book to be put aside to be picked up later in the week.
Great range, huge store, sure to have what you're looking for but I was overcharged, rude!
Largest bookshop in QLD. Has a great selection as well as friendly and helpful staff.
Nothing better than a bookstore walking to inspire you to read your books. …
