This house if you are a historic house member will let you have 1 free visit per year . First off despite the 4☆ rating there are a few caveats to that, which may effect a person's view of the place. Firstly let's start with the grounds , which are expansive, with some lovely areas to walk and you can even get a boat across the lake to shorten the walk. Gardens were nice though I though for the size of the house a little small . There is a mini zoo on site with flamingos, penguins , and a selection of birds and farm animals. Also for the children is a large play area , with the site having both a zoo and a large play area lose to the house, this can be a huge positive for families and a large negative if you just want to appreciate the grounds and house. There are cafes and a gift shop , the most obvious ones are situated in the stables area. As for the house its large, with impressive rooms, great artwork and amazing ceilings . All volunteers were helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. On a personal level they had a display on in a lot of rooms , highlighting political and environmental issues. Now I am not against this per se but I do think this exhibition should have been in its own area because in some rooms I couldn't see and enjoy the room as it was half covered by panels and/or you were deafened by inappropriate music. The exhibition is not on continually I should add but it did spoil the day for me somewhat. I have therefore not marked it down as it would not be fair, but I urge you to do research to see wether it's on so you can make your own decision. Overall a lovely place just be aware of the exhibition and the volume of children on sight.

Was a lovely visit to Harewood house today. I have often driven by the grounds and today finally decided to take time to explore it. The house itself is very opulent, with stunning architecture and character. It was interesting to learn about it's past. We were a bit disappointed that only the ground floor of the house was available to view. With the ticket price around £20 per head, would have liked to have seen more inside such a stunning period house. The grounds were well kept, with stunning panoramic views all around us. The only dissapointment: *Only one of the two cafes open, (which wasn't the end of the world in terms of wait times). However, it was very very unkempt, which seemed to really let the place down. It was so untidy/ unclean that we did not want to eat there, so decided to get a can of coke instead and sit at a picnic table in the grounds. It was at 13.45 so not exactly over the busiest of lunch periods. No one cleaning tables, rubbish on the floor.... It just felt that all the work put into the grounds/ preservation of the house was let down by the food outlet. We stayed for 3. 5 hours, which included the walking trails. The only reason we left was we were so hungry, having decided we didn't want to eat their food. Overall a lovely trip out, but probably airing on the more expensive side, for what was on offer. Now I have seen it, from my experience I don't think I would feel the need to return, despite it's fab landscape.

Overall I was very disappointed with this visit. Arriving via public transport one is left to walk the length of the drive with no provision for pedestrians. It was okay the day I was there as it was dry so I could walk on the grass but otherwise you would have to walk in the traffic. You also have to use the vehicle ticket booths to pay. The inside of the house is very special but my enjoyment of it was ruined by the modern art exhibition that replaced or blocked the historic artifacts. I was aware the exhibition was on but it was not made clear that it was so intrusive on the house tour. The irony that this exhibition is aimed at environmentalism while the unfriendly welcome to those in public transport was not lost on me! The room stewards were approachable, friendly and very informative, not to mention apologetic for the art. The terrace garden is beautiful and very well maintained but the Himalayan garden planting is unimaginative (visit the Himalayan garden at Grewlthorpe to see what it could be) and the walled garden is totally under whelming given its potential. Families appeared to enjoy the zoo elements of the estate but that's not my thing so I avoided it. The church is under-advertised given how beautiful it is and the contents are well worth the short walk to get there. Refreshments in the courtyard café felt expensive at £9 for a cheese salad roll and a can of fizzy drink. Not somewhere I will be returning to anytime soon.

This is a fab day out, we really enjoyed ourselves just being able to be outside with such beautiful gardens and sceneries, perfect to get away from busy lifestyles and just spend quality time to either yourself or loved ones. The house had staff in most (if not, every room) ready to answer questions or give information. Everything looked well kept and cared for. The gardens were beautifully maintained, with so many flowers blossoming & well cut grass. The farm/bird gardens, were a great place to walkthrough. There weren’t many farm animals to look at, but there was a wide variety of birds which all looked well cared for and look after. When we arrived, it was recommended to go to watch the penguin feeding which we did, and it was nice to watch. Walking through a lot of the gardens or woodland areas, there was a lot of information points about what animals/insects you can expect to see, and I felt like some of it would be great for small children. We didn’t eat in any of the cafes or purchase any food as we brought our own food, but looking at the prices it did seem overpriced, there are plenty of benches to sit at in the park so it’s nice to bring your own food and have a picnic. The shop was quite expensive, although most items were homegrown or handmade. The toilets were clean, and the hand wash area in the farm was clean with all soap dispensers full and hand towels full too. I definitely recommend visiting, it’s a great day out

Its a few years since I visited. Yesterday I visited, with three children under 3. It was a cold and foggy day but we had lots of fun. The playground is absolutely amazing but the area for littlies is broken and partially closed. Which is a shame because it's already much smaller than the other areas. This could really do with expanding. Such a shame that the book shop is now closed the building has been left in a state of repair it was such an asset to the grounds ... We had a walk to look around the bird garden there was such a varying and wonderful display of birds we loved looking and learning all about them. It was a very cold day so wondered to the cafe and shared 2 hot chocolates and two pieces of cake between the 4 of us, it cost £13.63. We sat outside under the loveliest canopy looking at the beautifullly decorated Christmas trees listening to Christmas music. The toilets in this area were modernised and clean but the toilet block in the car park is very out dated and tired. Would we return yes definitely still lots more to explore. Currently there is a winter walk to visit, but didn't go today. There is also a walled garden, lake side walk, Tibetan temple and of course the house to look around. Harewood house often has lots of events on so it's worth keeping an eye on upcoming things. There was a large group making Christmas wreaths today.

Where to start ... a fantastic day out. Prebooked timed tickets, arrived a little early, but still able to drive in. House didn't open until 11am, but we explored terrace gardens whilst waiting. The gardens were stunning, capability Brown working his magic again, and to be honest I was already sold on the visit after wandering and exploring outside. House was interesting and particularly enjoyed the Coronation exhibition. The outside though trumps the inside and I was pleased to be out again. Penguins, guinea pigs, goats, alpacas, pigs, rabbits etc are in enclosures to view; we quickly moved on from these and made our way to the lake. The free ferry was running today over to where the walled garden was, which was stunning. The old bothy served toasties and drinks, which were delicious, good value and the pastrami & gherkin is highly recommended. We decided to do the loop walk back, which was lovely, and then continued our walk round another loop taking in the church and woodland wonderland which had lovely basket maze, throne, deer and hares... beautiful. From here, there were lovely views back of the house. Throughout, there were plenty of places to purchase food, drink and ice creams, plenty of loos, benches, picnic areas and opportunities for those needing transport to get the courtesy bus. Loved it here.

We loved our day out at Harewood House, so much so that we are now members! (A decision we made an hour after entry) The extensive grounds are absolutely gorgeous; though we didn't have time to explore everywhere on the day we absolutely fell in love with the place based on what we did see, and we can't wait to go back and explore again. The Bird and Farm experience had a wonderful selection of wildlife, with the sound of the calls alone enough to draw a crowd. We spent around an hour initially just walking this area, with plenty to see and experience. The cafes have a reasonable selection of food (the "Walled Garden Vegetable Soup is incredible) and a good selection of drinks, including cocktails at the Terrace Café, all reasonably priced (and less than we've paid at similar venues elsewhere) The house itself is definitely worth a walk around. We were greeted with plenty of information about the tour, and volunteers were very helpful and informative. All in all we had a wonderful day out, with good food, good drinks and amazing, friendly and helpful staff and volunteers. We look forward to many future visits!

Lovely place to visit either for a nice stroll around the grounds on a beautiful sunny day, or a picnic with the family. I’d suggest getting there before 3pm when the last tour of the house is allowed. From then onwards you’ll not get in. And the house itself is very grand with loads of history to look and read through. The grounds are beautiful, with the main garden at the back, and then you can wander down the hillside to look out over the small lake before coming back full circle to the house. Well worth a visit and highly recommended. There’s loads of parking space, ice cream parlours and plenty of places for kids to run around. The only gripe was getting into the grounds at the main gates. The staff seemed very lax, only one person there and the car tailback was quite far back. I don’t understand why you’d want to buy a yearly ticket, so I reckon they should reduce the prices of them as an incentive as the day passes are quite expensive.

Nice mid week day out, not busy so could really take in all the information about the house & rooms. Used the QR code to download the room by room tour on our phones, but there were screens available for the tour in the rooms & plenty of guides in the rooms who were very willing to help with any questions & point out things that the QR tour didn't, a nice human touch!!! We had lunch in the Court Yard cafe & browsed through the 2nd book store & Harewood's gift shop. We also did the recommended walks found on the free guide that we were given when we brought our tickets at the gate house. Would recommend booking online tickets at weekends & during the holidays as I can imagine that it will be busy. There is a small kiosk/window cafe at the walled garden with plenty of outside seating overlooking the lake or in the walled garden. Also a kiosk near the children's play area. Will go back again & do recommend a visit.

We have loved previous visits to Harewood House, but this visit, specifically to see the house decorated for Christmas, was somewhat disappointing. The outside promised a treat, but the internal decorations, themed "through the ages" were lacklustre and unimaginative. For the £15 advance ticket (had we paid on the day, it would have been less expensive if combined with the entrance to the Christmas fair) we expected more than large cardboard cut outs of festive items. Had we come just for the house, we would have found nothing to linger for, and would have been done in 40 minutes. Luckily, we went when there was the Christmas fair on, which filled out our time there. The cafes are too expensive - for the prices charged for drinks, I expect real cups, not small disposable cardboard cups. Come in Harewood - so much potential and such history - please use it!

A lovely day exploring the vast grounds of Harewood. The house is beautiful inside and well worth taking a walk around. I really enjoyed the outdoor space. The walk down to the lake and gardens is nice. It's easy underfoot but good footwear helps. However if you find walking a challenge, there are small shuttle buses to get you between places. The onsite cafe had nice sandwiches and cakes. We also found another takeout only cafe for drinks. There are plenty of toilets on site too. It's a peaceful place and I can see why people join the trust and visit multiple times. It was a shame the ferry wasn't running on the day we went as this would have been nice. Also the bird garden is now closed. Hopefully Harewood can expand the farm experience as this would be great for kids. A great day out

DO NOT GO. very overpriced with no reward. Me and my boyfriend visited for the first time today, we saw the reviews online and gosh.. they are wrong. £22 per person (bare in mind we’re English Heritage and it wasn’t an option online) even after trying to contact them. It’s a grand house and yet we were only allowed access in about 5 poxy small rooms full of tacky Christmas decorations and cardboard everywhere. We were expecting to see some history, art and beautiful furniture but no, we were met with rubbish, you can’t even admire the room for what it should be due to all the tacky decorations. We thought ‘oh maybe we’ve missed an area?’ No. It’s all no access or blocked off. Gardens, underwhelming, small and unkept. We will not be returning, avoid at all costs. We would rather have a refund.

A delightful estate which offers fun for all the family. The house itself has been well preserved with some beautiful decor that has truly stood the test of time. Scattered throughout the property are incredibly insightful and knowledgeable volunteers are at hand to answer any questions (a special mention to the wonderful Peter, who helped us in Princess Mary’s bedroom (21/10/23), a true gem!). The Terrace gardens are miraculously maintained, boasting impressive flower displays overlooking the beautiful countryside. All Saints church is also more than worth the visit, offering a tranquil environment for a moment of reflection in today’s hectic society. The estate’s s gardens also boasted charm and elegance - if you can, try to make your way to the Walled Gardens to see the alpacas! Harewood House is a must visit, more than worthy of the £18 asking price!

I was really looking forward to visiting this house. However, I’m afraid to say I was really disappointed. The House nor the gardens are particularly large (comparatively speaking). Therefore for the price (£19 per non member adult) I feel it’s very expensive- admittedly it was a cold day but we only stayed for just over an hour. We would not return. I would instead recommend you visit Fountains Abbey - not too far from the house - more history and more spectacular. Also, to get to the car park you need to access via Harrogate Road (A61) through the Arch - when we visited, Google maps provided directions to access through the estate which you cannot do.

We had a lovely day. Nice walks for our dog, cafe which is dog friendly. Wonderful bird garden. Fab house full of wonderful objects. Italian renaissance painting, Chippendale furniture and Adam style rooms. Interesting connection with Edward 8th and our current Royal family. Nice to see Harewood actively addressing its slave history with an interesting exhibition on Arthur France who came with the Windrush generation and started the West Indian carnival in Leeds. Entry free once a year for Historic House members. £45 a year for unlimited access to the house and grounds and discounts in the cafe and shop. Cheeky statue in the grounds...lol

Hard to believe there is a such nice house near Leeds. It’s a fairly big house with several rooms to visit, each one has certain amount of fancy luxurious furnitures to present you the function of each room. Each room has a billboard that shows you the history of the room. They don’t have audio books headphone but it’s easy to read just from the board. The guarded is super cute. Love the roses and foxgloves they have there. The cafe is right next to garden. Have a cup of tear near the garden is just what you need in a good weather. I think they might have a tour but I am not so sure.

A nice day out. Sadly, we didn’t get to see all of the house due to a fire alarm. And the chain ferry was broken, so we didn’t get time to do the long walk around and fully explore the gardens. When we emailed to raise this, the reply was contrite - implying we should have foreseen these events and left more time to explore ‍♂️. Despite the staff attitude, this estate is worth a visit. Just make sure to arrive before lunch time (as a lot of the food had also run out by 1pm) and manage your expectations around the level of hospitality.

Amazing place. Beautiful building & grounds. The staff are very helpful (we had a disabled gentleman with us), helping us into the house via a wheelchair lift & providing a wheelchair to look around the ground floor of the house. A bus service is used for disabled people to take them around parts of the grounds. A full day there will not get you around the estate completely if you explore properly. The food is a little over priced, but it is for the upkeep of the house. I'd love to return and have a really good look around.

Visited on a Saturday The gardens were a nice walk, both the formal and around the lake. Great playgrounds for the kids. The house was a disappointment. I've visited before but this time the house felt quite empty and unloved. Rooms were converted for the David hardwood exhibition and other were quite bare, for example the dining room had an empty table, below stairs we went through a few empty rooms and corridors before reaching any sort of display. For nearly £20 entrance I was disappointed and probably won't visit again.

Lovely big house in a vast estate. Lots of paths and routes for walking about. Some are tarmac that then turn into gravel. Husband’s mobility scooter managed most, but a couple of steep gradients, which after a good wander meant thermal cutout kicked in and scooter stopped dead. Thankfully on tarmac bit so rescued by the very helpful shuttle bus. So, if bringing wheelchair/scooter, just bear in mind a couple of steep bits! Big play area for kids and small section with some cute animals in.

We visited on 31st August with my 10 month old son and other family members. I bought the full tickets, but didn’t realise the house wasn’t open - I think this should have been made more obvious as I’d of saved some money and not booked house tickets as well. Other than the house not being open we did have a lovely time, my son loved the little zoo, and looking around all the grounds. It was such a relaxing lovely day. I did use my all terrain pram / pushchair to get my son around.

Such a great place for fun activities. In the summer I attended the Great British Food Festival and that was the perfect venue and gained us entry into the house as well. Then their Magical Christmas Nights was beautiful as well! The only thing I’d change about the magical Christmas nights is perhaps having the traders and the food stay open longer and allow people to explore the inside of the house and traders at the same time so that the queue doesn’t get too long going into the house. Loved the musicians and the brilliantly themed rooms though!

  • Ankita Goyal

The house was magnificent with beautiful gardens, amazing views and kids play area. They have guides/volunteers that are very helping and patient, especially David. We asked them literally tons of questions and they answered all with a smile. I was amazed to learn that it was a permanent home up until 2019. They housed Radical Acts exhibition which was a bit distracting but nevertheless the experience was memorable. The house opens at 11am and closes at 3pm.

I always love visiting Harewood. It's so beautiful at the moment, all kitted out for Christmas and lit up to brighten up the short days. My husband did a willow-weaving workshop whilst I walked around the bird park and grounds. Lunch was good, with vegetarian and GF options, and even a delicious cheeky mulled wine! One photo is from the Christmas Market in November, which we loved as it took in a woodland walk.

Great playground for kids. Had some food and drink in the bottom cafe, under the Xmas marquee. Good day out. Bird garden closed at 3:00pm so check if you specifically want to see them, which i would recommend

Very nice place. Workers in house talked very passionate about history of the house, we listened each of them with pleasure. There is a lot to see around the house. Gardens , church small animal farm. Quite a lot of walking but worth it. (You can use a shutter bus if you don't like walking) There is also a lot to do for kids. Big playground, animals, stepping stones at river, short ferry trip on lake.

Didn't go into the house, just had a walk around the grounds. Unfortunately, had to keep an excited dog on a lead all the time, but the walk was lovely. Stunning views. Had a cup of tea and a slice of cake at the Terrace Cafe, sat outside and took in the breath taking view from the terrace. The cafe doesn't have a large choice on the menu, but the portions are large and reasonably priced. You have to book to get in, already booked our next trip there.

Great for a day trip- the house itself has lots to see and staff are great at explaining what's in each room. There are tens of red kites which circle the grounds and a large herd of deer to see. The gardens are lovely to walk around, there's some lovely cafes and a great adventure playground. Even better is that tickets are half price if you cycle or catch the bus!

Nice grounds and house and as long as you don't wander too far off the "Public" paths you won't be told off. Recent price rises in the cafe makes it now a total rip off,.with new signage telling you off about eating your own food at tables. Compared to National trust membership or English Heritage, it's beginning to be less attractive now.

What a fantastic place to visit. I went here with my 7 year old son and my girlfriend. We explored the woodlands, the terrace garden, the farmyard/penguins, the himalayan gardens. We had a wonderful time and could have spent another couple of hours here, without any problem. We didn't even get to explore the adventure playground or the house. Will definitely be back and would definitely recommend a trip here, on a sunny day.

Vw festival 2023 Brilliant location. However, some of the stewards had an attitude problem. Some of the rules were ridiculous. I'm not sure about going to next years show. I may find another show to go to instead. Love Harewood but not the events company also there wasn't enough General camping it was too overcrowded.

We have a membership so go fairly frequently, this is a beautiful place and we really enjoy taking the kids here for a walk and something to eat. The staff are always very nice, and whilst - particularly in the cafe in the main house - we'd like some more vegetarian options, we do like to sit down and relax in the comfortable surroundings and think of the opulence of life for the rich here in former times.

An English country estate straight out of a picture book. The house is so gorgeous. The design of the rooms is a feast for the eyes. The wall and ceiling decorations are especially outstanding. We went for the VW Festival. We've been before and it's truly an awesome time x dogs r allowed and catered for by many stalls with water n such, rides and mini campers for the kids to ride in as well as music, bike stunts and all the fab cars, campers and other vehicles all customised and detailed and looking great Plenty of food options too x We'll be back next year xXx

Three of us went to the Artisan Craft Market on 9th Nov. When we went to the cafe at 13.40pm there was hardly any food left. A bagel with smoked salmon or a choice of two cakes! The worst part was the toilets. Unisex, where the doors had glass windows !! Horrendous ! The market itself was good, and the volunteers driving to and from the gates were wonderful. Many thanks.

A beautiful house in stunning grounds. The staff on duty were all excellent. They were friendly and knowledgeable. We paid 21.5£ Per person to pass the barrier and reach the house and the domain. Inside the house there were a lot of rooms each decorated in a specific way but it had an old smell. Outside, there is a huge courtyard you can walk. There is a lake, a playground and many more. It’s definitely worth the money. You just need to have the time to spend it here

Not the biggest stately home, but beautiful and a lovely walk round the lake to the walled kitchen garden. Great if you have kids as they have a small zoo with a petting area and aviaries. Fascinating place and grounds, I visited in the week and it wasn't too busy. Car park a short walk to the house. I would suggest buying online. If you're coming from Leeds there can be a bit of a queue to get on the estate as there is a right turn on to the estate.

Really love this place. So tranquil on a quieter day or further into the gardens. Great for children as the play area is huge. They have nice locally made products on their shop, all the amenities and cafe's needed. Ample parking which is good. They've got rid of the bird cages which is for the best, so good on them! Love what they do at Harewood.

Great place to visit if you are into nature and exhibition! Perfect for hiking, it is such a massive place. The only down side is the entry ticket is a bit pricy and weather would have been nicer if it was sunny. Defo will come back with friends in summer

We were pleasantly impressed. The gardens are beautiful. We spent most of our time there. Then on entering the house, we wished that we had more time to enjoy the delights, treasures and history preserved in this beautiful house. A return trip is needed.

It's ok but they really need to upgrade their game in terms of the walk around area in front of the house. Old composting sparse bark on the footpath should be maintained better and the toilets were out of commission near the Church area. Just needs a bit more maintenance.

Enjoyed exploring the rooms in the house, and downstairs in the servants quarters. As a personal preference I most enjoyed those rooms uncluttered with the more temporary exhibitions. I would have enjoyed the paintings more curated ina plainer space.

Wonderful day out for my little girl it's just a shame that everything is so pricey when there! With the cost of living crisis they should really look at lowering prices to draw more people in but not so much it ends up bringing in the wrong people.

Attended the annual VW festival 2023. Huge grounds with a huge beautiful house. Unfortunately didn't go inside. The show itself was okay but being more of a beetle fan I was disappointed as it was more about campers and more modern /retro cars.

What a brilliant place. They couldn’t have been more helpful to my mum 96. Patrick was brilliant, picking us both up in his Shuttle Bus from the Courtyard where there was disabled parking and dropping us down by the lake. Lots of benches everywhere. Mum really enjoyed it! Very helpful service from the team of volunteer drivers.

Excellent farm area with a nice stroll through the bird sanctuary. The hymallian gardens are lovely with superb views across the lake. Fantastic adventure playground for children safe grounds for them to run around all day. Highly recommended it is pricey for admission but we feel value for money was achieved.

Wonderful place to visit. There are a number of lovely walks. The old stables are now shops and cafe with lots of open air seats. Red kites have released here and fill the skies. The on site Harewood Cottages are excellent

Since they took away the birds the experience not as good, the animal section only has 5 animals so doesn't entertain for long. There are plans to make the playground better. In the holidays they tend to put activities on which improves the visit

Not much to see, ground floor and part of kitchens. Girl in coach house cafe sullen and inefficient. Coffee made by another, was excellent. Crazy indoor cafe seating with all double doors wide open ! No birds and didn't find out until the end of booking! Kitchen garden excellent, loved all the labels!!

Amazing If you visiting Leeds or you live here you must visit Harewood House. The house and land are huge and lavish. Feels like Time Machine P.S. wanted more opened rooms of people who worked in the house

Although we visited as part of the food festival, this is still one of my favourite places to spend time with the family and mooch around the gardens. Would love to see the glasshouses restored one day!

Great day for the family plenty to do and see, lovely walks around the lake and gardens. There is a cafe where you can enjoy tea and cake. Plenty of free parking. And the house is well worth a walk round. Best to book online as its limited spaces. We paid 13.95 each adult. Well worth it

Great family day out - there's a good children's playground (which is also getting an upgrade soon) and some really nice paths through the extensive grounds around the lake. The cafe is good too

The only thing worth seeing is the artwork which was impossible due to the Christmas lighting displays on 27 November. The entrance fee is outrageous for what you get to see.

Flipping gorgeous. Really liked it here. The Xmas route in the house was a little underwhelming and I'd prefer to see the house in its original state but that's neither here nor there, its still amazing and worth every penny to keep this wondful place alive.

Fantastic stately home, and former residence of Princess Mary, the house and gardens were built with the proceeds of Caribbean sugar plantations, and trust is currently hosting a black history exhibition. Well worth a look as a perspective

Nice place, red kites in the sky (and rain), the Artisans Christmas market was great, got some gifts sorted already. Sadly didn't see the house as it was closed for this event, but the few rides on the tractor bus made up for that …

Lovely place to visit. We was most surprised to find penguins and flamingos! The adventure park is amazing too, if only I was 10 again. Beware though, apparently you have to stop even if the barriers are up. Oops!

Lovely house! You can feel and see wealth of the owners. Incredible amount of paintings showing idealistic beauty and richness of the times. Personally I was fascinated by all ceilings. Definitely worth visiting.
