exploring mckinnon bakeries ✨ brownie bomb hazelnut croissant baguette : @lumos_bakery_ : 250 McKinnon Rd, Mckinnon : Exploring bakeries nearby this week. Just visited Lumos Bakery in McKinnon earlier today to stock up on my bread. They’ve only been open for 3 months, but have already become a favourite in the area. ❤️: Went for bread, but came back with extra pastries. Could not resist their famous Brownie Bomb. A heavenly combination of gooey brownie inside a housemade flakey pastry—each component already great by itself, but even better together! And the Twice Baked Hazelnut Croissant? YES, PLEASE!

Lumos Bakery @lumos_bakery_ - Croissant $5.5 - Hazelnut Croissant $7 - Brownie Bomb $8 - Ham, Cheese & Garlic Croissant $8 - Chilli Garlic Twist $6 ️ Who’s craving a “Kwa-son”? Time to check out this gorgeous bakery in McKinnon! Everything we had was flakey and buttery! Highly recommend their brownie bomb! It was as bomb as its name! A rich decadent brownie wrapped with a flakey croissant. Just imagine eating a bougee version of pain au chocolate. Their savoury pastries were equally amazing. Absolutely in love with the chilli garlic twist! Would definitely revisit again

  • Barry

Bought a variety of pastries to try and they were tasty. Their signature brownie bomb was a unique concept but the hazelnut croissant was my favourite with just the right amount of sweetness. The chilli garlic twist surprisingly has a kick to it which was pleasant as the heat is usually toned down at other places. The only disappointing thing was their special cookie croissant which was very small and didn't have much cookie filling. They have tables for you to eat but everything is served take away with no cutlery. If you are sharing the pastries, they offer to cut them for you.

The bread is really great but I've just given up because of the incredibly slow and inefficient service. They've been open months now, more than enough time to sort out the service side of things. If the young 'gender ambiguous' person is there I'll pop in and buy some bread because they are fine. But if the middle-aged people are running the till I give it a miss. Guys, if you can't execute a swift 5 second manoeuvre to turn around with a pair of tongs and put a loaf of bread in a paper bag, you've got a problem.

You’re spoilt with options here. Plenty of pastries, sweet and savoury, bread and cookies too. I heard the hazelnut croissant is really good but forgot to order, I got almost every other pastries though. My pick would be the brownie bomb, although I don’t even have a sweet tooth. All other pastries are tasty too. The only let down is that the croissant is not as light and flakey as I would have liked. The atmosphere is great, and it’s buzzing like any busy neighbourhood café. Will go back to try the hazelnut.

Lumos Bakery has brought life to this stretch of McKinnon Road. It has a superb atmosphere and you can smell the bread from ages away. Whether you want a lovely coffee or outstanding food, this is your place. From magnificent sourdough bread offerings to toasties and croissants to die for, and great sweet offerings, you will not leave disappointed. You can even sit on the large communal table, sit at the window watching the world go by, or sit outside. If you wait a bit before ordering, it is worth the wait.

I only recently discovered this freshly opened bakery after my friend raved about it, particularly their coffee. I bought the regular plain croissant and try their chilli cheese stick with a small cappuccino. The croissant was ok and not too oily, although it could have been a little flakier. The chilli cheese stick, on the other hand, was interesting! They topped it with fresh chilli, which added a great hot kick. The coffee was right, nothing out of the usual.

It’s worth making a trip even if you’re not local! Freshly baked everyday with a vast selection for anyone who’s after a cheeky sweet pastry or a side of bread with butter for any meal! We can’t go past the Almond and Hazelnut croissants, and was super surprised by the crunch on that Brownie bomb. Had some baguette and olive baguette with butter paired with steak for dinner and it was heavenly! Can’t wait to try the rest of the menu next time!

Not only is this the best pastries, sourdough and coffee in Melbourne, the team are awesome too! Karina and her team sure know how to make delicious pastries and sourdough. Our daughter is anaphylactic to eggs and Karina with a days notice made her croissants without egg wash which she loved. The fruit sourdough is insanely good as is the white and seeded sourdoughs. Go and support an incredibly talented team you won't be disappointed.

The newest bakery in McKinnon. Some of the highlights are their brownie bomb, pain au chocolate, hazelnut croissant and chilli garlic twist. The brownie bomb is a must try - moist and heavenly delish chocolate brownie wrapped in luxurious croissant layers. Best eaten while it's still warm. For those who's not afraid of chilli, their chilli garlic twist is a must try too. Love the hidden chilli with a nice kick. Opens Wed - Sun.

The pastries here are absolutely delicious! I especially loved the hazelnut croissant They'd even give Lune a run for their money. Everything is takeaway, but you can sit in the cafe and eat/drink your prizes. I sat out on the street seating with my doggy in the sun.

Another amazing bakery in this area. The brownie bomb did not disappoint. Just a high quality, solid brownie in beautiful, flaky pastry. Just have a look at the photo of the cross-section! Also tried the maple bacon croissant which was lovely. Absolutely cannot wait to be back to pick up more treats! Editing to add: chilli garlic twist and seeded sourdough were both delicious!

Have walked past this place a lot of times on walks with my young child, always wanted to venture in & try some of their baked goods. Today was the day and I’m so glad I did. The guy who greeted me gave excellent suggestions. Happy to have this place within walking distance! Will be back.

With multiple food intolerances, I was amazed to find this gem of a bakery!! I can now eat bread again thanks to these guys. The sourdough and the seeded loaf are truly unbelievable. The kids are thoroughly enjoying the croissants, twists and much more. Such a great friendly vibe to boot. Thank you Lumos

  • Fiona Clancey

Sourdough loaves and baguettes are absolutely delicious. The huge range range of croissant products are amazingly diverse in sweet and savoury flavours and always light, fluffy and crispy. My current Lumos bakery favourites are the fruit loaf and the chilli twist croissant. Give this bakery a try soon.

  • Sabrina Potter

Add to the list! Cute little bakery with a great selection of pastries, bread and sandwiches. We came for the croissants and got an almond croissant and white chocolate croissant with some coffees. Everything was amazing. The toasties look amazing too so will be trying those next time.

Hazelnut crossiant is probably the best in Melbourne. Brownie bomb is pretty good too. Would love for the plain crossiant to be a bit more flaky and have a more distinct butter taste. Overall a great variety of delicious bakery items and would definitely visit again!

  • michelle.in_melb_ guide

☞︎︎︎ Brownie Bomb It is da bomb alright! There is never enough chocolate in them regular chocolate croissants, and this is jjjjust so satisfying. Flakey pastry + moist brownie, aw yeah! ☞︎︎︎ Chilli Garlic Twist Not too spicy, smells and tastes deliciously garlic-ey!

Amazing local bakery, really love the selection of innovative flavours of croissants etc. Felt bad when asked for sourdough loaf to be sliced and got told it'd take a couple of minutes because they're hand sliced . Love seeing great local businesses thriving! …

  • Sod Chea

Popped in this morning to grab a brownie croissant but got there too early and they weren't ready yet so I bought a pain au chocolat instead... Better. Than. Lune. Incredible. Coffee was excellent also. I look forward to trying their other tasty delights asap!

Lumos is a great asset to the McKinnon brunch scene. A solid range of sourdough loaves and crusty baguettes. Loads of variety in sweet treats too. There were ample seated areas both inside and out. Easy parking along McKinnon Road or Penang St.

OMG seriously THE best pastries and bread I've had in Melbourne , all made in house so not the same same as all the coffee shops. Everything I had packed a huge flavour punch. So happy this is in the neighbourhood!

  • Thomas L

One of the best almond croissants I’ve had in a long time. More toasted than other ones I’ve had before, but the filling was elite, the crunch was an unexpected delight and the inside maintained a fluffy texture

  • David Clancey

The bread is delicious - darker and tastier than many others; my favourites are sourdough (white & wholemeal) plus the fabulous fruit loaf chocked full of fruit and brilliant for toast AND the almond croissants.

  • Xavier Verhoeven

So happy this awesome bakery has opened up in Mckinnon. Everything is great, but the almond croissants are genuinely the best I've ever had. The brownie bomb is absolutely worth a try too. But it's intense.

  • Greg Hortin

Went for the opening day and enjoyed croissants (savoury and sweet), coffee and a seven seed loaf to go. All delicious with the kimchi croissant being a surprise favourite. Planning to visit again soon.

Been a couple of times. If you're a fan of pristine looking pastries (ala Lune) - you'll be impressed with the offerings here. Service is super friendly - quality is top-notch. Bentleigh is spoilt!

A welcomed addition to the neighbourhood. The coffee was nice and the bakery offers a great selection of goodies. The modern decor adds to the overall ambiance. Service was friendly!

  • Rachael Bulcock

Such a stunning and welcoming bakery. The croissants are delicious, as are their toasties and hot chocolates. Can’t wait to try more of their menu in the coming weeks …

  • David Richardson

Huge variety, all so delicately made. It’s obvious that a lot of thought and time went into developing each product. Croissants are unmatched, especially the hazelnut

  • Nicola Tan

So delicious, flakey and buttery. Thought the brownie croissant was going to be sickly sweet but it wasn’t. Really well balanced. Would highly recommend!

Bread is tasty but over priced. $9.15 for a loaf of non organic wholemeal. Bentleigh has a few alternate options of equal quality and lesser price.
